Problem-Solving Stimulation
The problem that was presented in the activity was to get all three animals to the other side of the river, without leaving the dog alone with the cat or the cat alone with the mouse. What the activity required me to accomplish was to get the three animals across the river without leaving the dog alone with the cat or the cat alone with the mouse. The dog and mouse were able to be left alone but the cat could not be left alone with neither, the dog or mouse. I needed to remove the cat from the situation on both sides of the river to ensure the cat was not eaten or did not eat the mouse.
I tried several times to take the animals across the river one after another but then tried taking the cat out of the situation on each side so the dog and mouse were left alone. I had to take the cat across the river first. Then come back and get the dog. Once the dog was dropped off on the other side, I had to pick up the cat and take it back over to the original side of the river. Then pick up the mouse and take it to the other side. Then I had to go back over to the original side of the river and pick up the cat to take it across the river.
It was difficult to understand at first but once I discovered that I could take the cat back to the original side of the river it all began to make more sense to me. As I dropped off the dog, taking the cat back to get the mouse made it where the dog and mouse were the only two animals being left alone on either side of the river. It was a lot easier to solve the problem when I realized the cat to come back to the original side of the river but before having that knowledge it seemed impossible. I tried several times to take one animal at a time to the other side and failed each time but then got it on the first try after...
