7. Process Analysis (“How To”)
NOTE: The following is general information about the rhetorical mode. It is not meant to take the place of any specific instructions given by your instructor for this assignment. If your instructor wants you to write your paper in a different manner, then by all means do it the way your instructor requires you to do it.

Processing the Process Essay
Here is some detailed information about writing your process (“How to”) essay. 1. The “big idea” behind the paper: Practically everyone knows how to do something very well. In fact, many people know how to do something so well that they could actually teach someone else to do it. That is the main purpose behind the process essay. You are to select something (a process) that you know how to do very well and then write a regular essay which “teaches” the reader how to do that same thing. 2. Here are some important specifics and details. Follow all of them very closely. The formal name of the mode is process analysis. Process = a step-by-step movement from a beginning point to an ending point. Analysis = a careful examination; a close, detailed look at something 3. How do I select a topic? a. b. c. d. Something you know how to do very well Maybe something you do as a hobby Something you do as part of your job Perhaps something you learned how to do in school (but do not use any textbook to copy from or to get steps from). All ideas should come from only one source: your own experience.

4. What kind of topic should I select? a. First of all, select something that is very practical, down-to-earth, and easily visualized by your reader. b. Accordingly, you should not select a topic that is general, wishy-washy, and much too philosophical, such as “how to change your attitude about life.” Leave that stuff to Dr. Phil and Oprah. c. To be on the safe side, limit your choices to one of two categories: 1. Making something (a bird house, a swing, a hamburger, etc.) 2. Performing a service (waiting tables, washing a car, etc.)

d. Select something easily manageable, not something too big. For example, how to build an entire house would be much too big and complicated for this essay; however, how to repave the driveway would be more manageable. 5. One of the most important purposes of this whole assignment is your ability to look at the process critically (analyze) and to divide the whole thing into several concrete steps. a. Have at least three steps. Obviously, the more complex the process, the more steps you will have. b. Each step should be easy to visualize as you explain it to the reader. c. Each step must be distinct and different from the previous step. d. Write one whole paragraph to explain each step. When a new paragraph begins, the reader of your paper should correctly assume that a new step in the process is also beginning. 6. The process itself should have a definite beginning point, a middle point, and an ending point. (See transitional words and phrases below.) Your paper should seem to be always moving forward through the process to get to the end. Don’t dawdle around or get bogged down in the middle of the process. 7. Your introductory paragraph contains no steps; instead, it simply prepares the reader for the topic of your paper. You might try including such information as the following: When did you first try this process? Why is this process important? Why should the reader care about this process or be interested in it? NOTE: By the time the introductory paragraph ends, the reader should know clearly what the process is and that you are about to explain to him how to do it. Don’t make your reader have to “guess” what you’re going to talk about. 8. By the same token, the concluding paragraph of your essay also contains no steps. The purpose of the concluding paragraph is to “ease out” of the topic by talking somewhat generally about the product or the service and then ending on a nice, warm, positive note about the topic in general. 9. Even though you are dealing with several steps in this essay, do not literally list and label the steps as steps. For example, do not write anything like this: Step I: Step II: Get two pieces of 2 by 4 plywood. Sand them down until both are very smooth.

Instead, explain each step in a regular, normal paragraph using regular, normal words and sentences. In short, this essay is not any different in appearance and style from any of the other essays you have already written for this course. You are to write a regular, normal essay that has the purpose of explaining to the reader in great detail the various steps involved in how to make a product or how to perform a service. That’s it!

10. Do not use the two words “How to…” in your title. This is very unnecessary. By the time the reader finishes your introduction, it should be crystal clear to him what your topic is and that you are about to explain to him how to make it or how to perform it. (It is all right, however, to use the words how to in your introductory paragraph if you wish.) 11. Just this one time for this one assignment, you may use the words you, your, and yours if you feel you must. In a way, you are talking directly to the reader, so the use of these pronouns might be considered necessary. However, do not overuse them. 12. Here are some important transitional words you might need to use as you take the reader through the forward journey of explaining your process: At the start of the process At first,…….. In the beginning,…. As you start,….. To begin with,….. The first step,…. When you begin,….. In the middle of the process Next,.…. After that,….. Continuing with,…. The next step is…. When this step is finished,…. As you continue,……

At or near the end of the process Finally,…. As you finish,….. Toward the end,…. The last step,…..

Tips on Doing a Cooking Process Essay
If you choose to tell “how to” cook some dish with which you are familiar, that is all right. However, you must be careful not to make your essay sound like a recipe. Your essay should use regular, flowing, smooth sentences, not little short choppy phrases and sentences like those commonly used in recipes. Nowhere in your essay should you make a “list” of anything--no listing of necessary utensils or ingredients. You will need to say everything in normal, regular, full-length sentences. Here are two paragraphs. The first shows how you should NOT phrase your cooking how-to paper. The second talks about the same dish but uses more acceptable sentence structuring. NOTE: Because in a certain sense you are talking directly to the person who is reading your how-to paper, it will be all right in this one essay for you to use the word you when giving your information and instructions. However, do not overuse it. Unacceptable (this paragraph sounds exactly like a recipe): It is fairly easy to cook a delicious apple cobbler. Here are the things you need: two cups apples (peeled and sliced); 1 ½ cup of sugar; two sticks of butter or margarine; two cups of flour. Pour apples into a large howl. Add sugar slowly. Blend in butter or margarine. Pre-heat oven to 525 degrees. Place bowl on center rack of oven. Cook for 30 minutes or until brown on the top. Acceptable (this one uses regular sentences and phrases to say the same thing): It is fairly easy to cook a delicious apple cobbler. First, you will need to have at least two cups of apples on hand, and they should be peeled and sliced into thin crescent shapes. Almost any type of apple will do--either red delicious or granny style or whatever your local grocery store offers. Next, you will need about one half cup of sugar for extra added sweetness. Either white granulated sugar or brown refined will work equally well. (I have used both kinds with the same success.) Finally, about two sticks of butter or two pounds of margarine will be necessary to give the cobbler that lip-smacking smoothness that my family just loves. The actual making of the cobbler is also fairly simple. You’ll need a very large mixing bowl, into which you will pour all the carefully cut apple slices as well as the sugar and the butter. Now you’ll need a rather large fork or spatula to mix and “mush up” all the ingredients together until they are all fairly well blended. While you have been doing all this, the oven has been pre-heating to a toasty 425 degrees Fahrenheit. When you think the mixture is well blended, then place the bowl carefully near the back of the center oven rack and leave it there for about thirty minutes. After about half that time, you will begin to smell the enchanting aroma of baked apples filling your home, thus telling everyone that the wonderful time of fall is definitely here.

Statistical Analysis Process

...Statistical Analysis Process: Generally, all of the business courses that you take are focused on answering a single question - “What can managers do to improve the performance of their organizations?” It is not sufficient to theorize that a particular business strategy will lead to improved performance. You must test the theory. The statistical analysis process is a standardized methodology for testing theories. Generally, you identify a strategy that you believe may work, you ask experts what they think about the strategy, you analyze the data collected from the experts, you interpret the results from the analysis, and you draw conclusions about how well the strategy works based on the interpretations. All remaining assignments require that you follow this process. 1. State the research question. This is general question related to our area of concern. For example: “What can managers do to improve the performance of their organizations?” That’s probably stated a little too generally. More specific examples include: “Will implementation of a market orientation strategy improve my organization’s performance?” and “Will implementation of JIT and TQM improvement programs combine to improve my organization’s performance?” 2. State the hypotheses. Hypotheses are formulated from the research question. They must be stated in a form that is statistically testable. For example, “Market orientation is positively associated with operational......

Afterwards, you should write a summary that, like the graphic organizer, includes all the vital parts. A response journal and a reading-response worksheet are additional things you can do after reading something. The next and final step is usually responding to the work of the author. The first action in this process is to be aware of exactly what your instructor wants you to do such as what direction to go in and the amount of pages you need to write. Once that is affirmed, proceed to critically analyze the work so you properly identify with what the author is trying to convey. Write critical questions you can answer, use annotations, and fill out a reading-response worksheet. These actions will make it easier to respond to the text and fulfil your instructor's request. The way I read was something I didn't even pay any heed to. Before I read this chapter I never thought much about the process of reading, however, now I realize the importance of being an active reader. The techniques taught, like previewing, highlighting, and reviewing, will involve more usage of time, but in the long run will help me tremendously. I feel comfortable and confident that I am now well equipped to properly read difficult selections from different genres and still be able to comprehend the work. ...Process Analysis I believe this article will tell me how to write a proper, process analysis essay while also providing examples and other tools needed to start off the essay on the right foot. Process analysis is an operation that is composed of processes designed to add value by transforming inputs into useful outputs. The author compares the term process analysis to cause and effect and narration the author says that all of these three ideas break down into three different categories. Narration talks mainly about what happens, while cause and effect talk about why it's happening, and process analysis talks about how it is happening. The examples the author gives for process analysis are things like giving directions, or how to make ice cream. The author provides us with two different types of process analysis. One of them is directional, which provides instructions on how to do something. The purpose of directional process analysis is to provide the reader instructions to follow in order to achieve a particular task. Then, there is the informational type of process analysis which explains how something works, how something is made, or how something happens. Nonetheless, the effort and time you put into the vehicle will be gratifying in the end. There is nothing more rewarding than having a vehicle that is well preserved. My car isn’t the most prestigious car out there but it is doing better than most cars the same age. The aroma of engine oil and grease on your hands is just a little taste of the challenges you will encounter. The way I preserve my car and the time I put into it is a great feeling of accomplishment. You too can share this feeling of triumph by following these simple steps. I will explain how to tidy your interior, check your oil, and keep your fluids and brakes from depleting. First, you want to start by cleaning the interior and lining of your car. To do this you must use a vacuum, preferably a two horsepower shopvac. This will keep the carpet clean and free of any dirt and other unpleasant things you find at the bottom of your shoe. After you’re done vacuuming, you want to spritz your car with your favorite scent. There is nothing better than walking into your car and getting smacked in the face by an angelic scent. Keep in mind that failure to follow this will result in undesirable odors and possibly attract unwanted pests. Next, you want to start your oil check. The oil cap is located in the hood of the car. To access this you must pull the lever......

From choosing the box, to adding the cheese, it is not as simple as you believe it to be. Making mac and cheese is an art and must be learned. It takes years to master the making of mac and cheese As a result, it takes focus, determination, character, and even a little bit of soul. ...Timothy Blake White Griffin ENG 102 01 Research Paper Alternative Energy The continued use of the planet’s fossil fuels will eventually come to an end and will require an ultimatum to be made. Other sources of energy must be found to sustain this dependency that society has created, so it can continue to fuel our everyday needs. Although scarcity is a leading factor in the search for newer resources, the damaged caused by fossil fuels need to be reversed, including pollution and global warming. Every day there are more and more advancements, innovations, or even inventions of new alternative resources that need to be taken advantage of to maintain a stable and reliable source of energy. Alternative energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydrogen energy are more durable and efficient to be used as a substitute for current natural resource uses. Foremost, fossil fuels have been a primary source for energy for years, and had some major consequences alongside them. Pollution is no new name to the harm our environment receives and it comes from the burning of fuel. As well as pollution being created, global warming, which is a huge debate in today’s society, is also caused by burning fossil fuels (Rinkesh “What are fossil fuels”). Not only does it damage our environment, but it causes health problems for its wildlife and our own lives. These hazardous effects will have a long term duration and require a cleaner solution and that is natural resources (Rinkesh “What......

...How to Put a Pep in Your Step Confidence is commonly confused with cockiness and vainglory. Confidence is self-assurance and content, which unfortunately is sparse among today’s youth with everyone conforming to blend with society and expectations. Confidence starts with you and being able to fully accept , love, and be happy with yourself. Changing your way of thinking, your looks, what you wear, or how you speak will not change who you are and may only temporarily boost your confidence. To fully and truly love yourself, one must eliminate any and all doubts instilled by others. No one should ever be quick to judge another. In accordance, you must also learn to turn your flaws into exceptional, or favorable traits. Embrace them. Use them to help you stand out. Own them! Rather it be weight, hair style, a disability, etcetera. Know that you are unique and there is only one you. Your looks, your personality, your voice, your thoughts. It is only then that you will begin to feel comfortable in your own skin. Another step of equal importance is maintaining optimism. With an optimistic attitude, you will always have confidence. They may be assigned based on kitchen proximity, tasks to be done, stewards expertise, etc. If schedules need to be adjusted due to unexpected daily demands, stewards will check the schedule throughout their shift. This change in process is indicated by an addition of a single step at the beginning of the process. The steward may check a schedule which will assign the steward to a kitchen and duties. The schedule can be referenced by mobile media like a cell phone, headset, employee work station, etc. As the steward completes his tasks at a particular kitchen, he references the schedule again to see if another kitchen needs tasks completed. 2. ...People love pets. For many, this love starts at an early age, either growing up with a pet or knowing someone that has one. As we get older, many of us want pets so that we may continue that relationship. However, as children, we are not aware of the responsibility that comes with pet ownership and some individuals find they no longer can provide for or want the pet. It is vital, not only for the individual but also the pet that we all be responsible pet owners. The path to becoming a responsible pet owner does not begin with purchasing a pet. It starts with a self-assessment on one’s life. Most of us have an idea of the type of pet that we want already be it a dog, a cat, or a bird, but before someone can even reach that stage, the prospective pet owner needs to look inward. Let’s say Joe wants a dog; specifically a Labrador. As a future pet owner, how much time does Joe have to care for a dog if he works 50 hours per week, golfs on the weekends and lives alone? What if Joe lives in a 400 square foot apartment in New York City? In Joe’s case, it might not be the best for him or the prospective pet if he plans on maintaining his current lifestyle. Future pet owners need to examine all aspects of their personal life, including their living environment. A prospective pet not only needs the proper amount of space and attention, but also may require hours of training, regular exercise, or have particular needs. Following the self-assessment, pet selection is the......
