Process Analysis

Have you ever wanted to learn at least the basics of how to drive a manual transmission? If so, it a process that takes time but once you have it down, it’s a skill that you will never lose. Almost like a second nature. Learning how to drive a manual transmission opens an entirely new world of driving. Your mpg increases, you have better reliability, and you also have enhanced control over the vehicle. When learning how to drive a manual transmission there are thirteen main basic steps that you need to learn. First you need to get on level ground. When learning how, it is best if you can roll down the windows, this will help you better hear the engine sound so that you can know how when to adjust the gears also, don't forget to wear your seat belt. Secondly, you will need to learn to identify the pedals. In a manual car, there are three pedals. The pedal to the far right is the gas, also known as the accelerator, the middle pedal is the brake and to the far left is the clutch. The third step, one of the most important steps, is to learn what the clutch does. The clutch disengages the engine from the driveshaft allowing you to shift the gears on your transmission. Before you switch gears, the clutch must be depressed. Fourth step is to find the clutch pedal - the one to the far left - when you have identified the clutch begin to press it down and hold it to the floor. Also, it is a good idea to get used to steadily and slowly releasing the clutch. After you feel comfortable with the clutch you will move the shift knob into neutral. Neutral is the middle position that feels free when moving the shifter from side to side. When you are in neutral, the vehicle is now considered out of gear. This will be the fifth step. Sixthly, to start the engine you will have to push the clutch fully to the ground, while holding the clutch to the ground you can now start the engine. Once you have started the engine, be sure to make sure the vehicle is still in neutral, after you have identified the vehicle is in neutral you can release the clutch. The 8th step you are going to press the clutch all the way to the floor again as you did in the sixth step. When the clutch is fully to the ground you are going to put the vehicle into first gear. The first gear is going to the in the upper left position. On most shifters there are usually some kind of visual layout of the gears in a pattern of top of the shifter.
After you are sure that you are in first gear you are going to very slowly life your foot up from the clutch until you begin to hear the engine speed dropping, after you hear is dropping you then will push it back in. To be more confident you will repeat this step several times until you can instantly recognize the sound of the vehicle. To get moving you are going to lift your foot from the clutch pedal and at the same time you are going to apply pressure to the gas. This is a difficult step, but once you have it down it will become natural to you. You will want to slowly and eventually push the gas as you let out the clutch. When driving, when your RPM reaches about 2500 to 3000 rpms, it is time to shift into second gear. This is the gear directly below first gear on the left side. Once you are in gear you will want to remove your foot from the clutch, this will prevent you from wearing our clutch out. When it comes time for you to stop you will release your fight foot off the gas and move it to the brake. At about ten mph you will now begin to feel the vehicle start to chug. To prevent this from continuing to happen you have to press the clutch fully down to the ground and move the shifter to neutral to prevent the vehicle from stalling, also known as killing the vehicle. After you have mastered these main steps you will now know how to drive a manual vehicle. Even though driving a manual can be extremely difficult and frustrating at first, it becomes enjoyable as you learn and have it mastered. Remember, practice makes perfect.
