Research Strategy Paper
A problem that I have identified in which I have in my academic life is procrastination. Procrastination has been an issue for me since my years in high school and it is time I develop a strategy to deal with this “catastrophic” issue. In this paper I will develop a research strategy to find a solution for my academic procrastination and will incorporate these solutions into my academics.
Have you ever received an assignment or project and you are given a few days to complete it. You tell yourself “ok, I am going to start working on the assignment tomorrow”. Now tomorrow has come and you know you have to start working on your assignment but then you’re going “well I still have two more days to do it” so you tell yourself “ok I will start tomorrow because I still have another day before it’s due”. Next thing you know it’s the night before your assignment is due and now you are stressing out, pressing for time, and up past midnight trying finishing your assignment. This what I have been doing for the last three years in school, waiting till the last minute to start a paper or study for exam. By me procrastinating when it comes to school work I feel pressured, stressed, and also feel as if I am not creating work that is to the best of my ability, this has caused me to receive grades that I was unsatisfied with and really has just made me an average student. I’m not alone when it comes to procrastination; about 50% of students procrastinate in a consistent and problematic fashion (Tan & Huan, 2008, 136). I know the numbers might sound surprising but coming from a college student they are not at all, after speaking to my peers who are also college students 20 out of the 30 I asked all said they “procrastinate when it comes to academic school work”. Academic procrastination is a reflection of daily postponement to school life is defined as to delay duties and responsibilities related to school, or to save them to the last minute (Denziz, Tras, & Ayodgan, 2009).
The information I will gather to assist me in creating solutions to solve my problem with procrastination is statistical data, particular strategies to help cope with my problem and as well hearing from my peers around me. I will obtain this information from sources out of online articles, our text book, and also a sample of my college peers. The University Of Phoenix Library is where I will explore various articles written on procrastination to help find statistical data in which will help understand how many college students use any form of academic procrastination as well. Another resource I will use to help solve my problem is our class text book “Keys to College Studying: Become an active Thinker, Second Edition”. I will use the book to help assist me in ways to find solutions to avoid procrastination and become a better student. Lastly I will also conduct sample of my college peers and friends to ask them “have you ever procrastinated with your school work, if so how often”? So I will gather a variety of types of information to help me in solving my problem with procrastination.
The process I will use to evaluate the information I have gathered will be critical thinking skills and also distinguish validity from perspective. Critical thinking is the process of gathering information, analyzing it in different ways, and evaluating it for the purposes of gaining understanding, solving problem, or making decisions. I will first gather all my necessary information this includes using my resources that I have available to me such as the “UOP” library in which I found articles that have statistical data in how many college students engage in academic procrastination and also back ground information on academic procrastination. Lastly I will analyze and clarify all my information making sure the information I gathered is reliable and useful to helping me find a solution to my problem. As I am gathering my information I will separate the valid facts from those facts that are others perspectives. Perspectives are associated with assumptions, opinions, and also personal experiences and not are real valid facts. People have perceptions that those who procrastinate are lazy but that is not necessarily true because however some Denziz, Tras & Ayodgan quotes Orpens in The causes and consequences of academic procrastination the students who procrastinate have little to no interest in the material tend to their procrastinate more (Denziz, Tras, & Ayodgan, 2009) . So as you can see someone’s perspective is not always accurate and in fact can be the complete opposite of what it really is.
The strategies I will use to avoid procrastination are analyzing the effects of procrastinating, set reasonable goals, break task into smaller parts, get started, ask for help, and reward myself at the end. Analyzing the effects of procrastinating will bring to my attention what will happen if I continue to putt off my responsibilities such as a low grade, failure in a class, and even stress. Once I have analyzed the effects of procrastinating I will next set a reasonable goal that will allow me enough time to complete an assignment without feeling pressured and time to spare before it is due and by me doing so it will allow me plenty of time to complete the assignment with out feeling pressured and also gain the confidence that I am able to complete an assignment without procrastination. The next strategy I will have to resolve my problem in procrastination will be breaking the task into smaller parts and work on the material in pieces. Carter and Lyman (2007) stated “if you concentrate on achieving one small step at a time, the task may become less burdensome” (p. 21). By doing so you have ample amount of time to complete the work and not feel overwhelmed and pressured to complete the full assignment. Asking for help will help you overcome any road blacks that are keeping you from moving forward and potentially leading to procrastinating with your assignment. If you are having trouble understanding the material someone else may be able to clarify any information for you. The last strategy I will use to help resolve my problem is rewarding my self for completing the assignment on time and not performing any forms procrastinating. A reward can vary from an “A” on the assignment, hanging out with friends or even doing something I love like going to the gym or playing sports.
After researching what it means to academically procrastinate and solutions to solve my problem through analyzing the effects of procrastinating, setting reasonable goals, asking for help, and rewarding myself once the job is done. By me writing this paper and researching on academic procrastination it has really open my eyes to the problem I have but gave me plenty of solutions to solve my problem.

...Research Strategy Paper GEN200 Research Strategy Paper This research strategy paper is about a problem for me in my day to day life and how I would like to come up with a strategy to solve the issue. I will briefly discuss my problem that I’m having in my day-to-day life. Identifying what kinds of information I can use to help in solving this issue and where I can get this information from. I will be going over the process that I will use to evaluate the information that I have gathered. The types of things I will consider as I evaluate the information. Last, I will explain how to use the information I have gathered to resolve the problem or issue at hand. The problem or issue that I am having in my day-to-day life is procrastination. I don’t know why, but for some reason it’s hard for me to get started on any task. I found myself getting very distracted at times and usually wind up avoiding the situation. I think I work better under pressure so I tend to put things off until the last-minute hoping that the time crunch will push me to get the task done. When I know I have to get something done I usually think I have plenty of time and start to blow things off. An example of this is a trip that I have been planning to San Diego in order for me to obtain a birth certificate. My birth certificate is needed in order for me to apply for jobs and other needed benefits. If I did this by mail the process would be more complicated in which it...

Personal Responsibility

...Personal Responsibility Correlated to Academic Success Eric P. Morris GEN200 01/28/2012 Professor Aaron J. James Abstract This essay defines personal responsibility, as applied to academic students in college, from a personal perspective. The relationship between personal responsibility and academic success is explored through successful and failed outcomes students experienced from personal choices as well as concepts to maximize academic success. A plan of strategies that students, practicing personal responsibility, could implement to ensure successful accomplishments at the collegiate level is also discussed. Personal Responsibility Correlated to Academic Success There are many elements in the formula to be successful at the collegiate level. The most important of these elements is personal responsibility. Personal responsibility is the awareness that oneself is personally in control of all their successes and failures and their personal motivation determines how much success they will achieve. Every decision a person makes has a consequence. The self-evaluation of ourselves will bring the awareness of the consequences associated with our decisions. This awareness will allow us to make decisions where success will be the only outcome. College success requires persistent motivation, and the responsibility to choose, to work hard. Students are more likely to achieve the motivation required for their academics if they...

Overcoming Personal Procrastination

...Overcoming Personal Procrastination Overcoming Personal Procrastination Abstract This paper will identify a personal problem of procrastination, where I will find solutions to help correct this problem, evaluate the information I have gathered, and explain how I will use the information to implement correction to my personal procrastination. Overcoming Personal Procrastination In my life I think I have always procrastinated. I remember since childhood in elementary school and middle school finishing projects the last day or late into the night before the project was due. Through this class, I have learned that it is partially due to my intense perfectionism. I get nervous and sometimes anxious of the impending project. It also has to do with the uncomfortable feeling of the unknown. When I do not know what I am going to do for a project, or I haven’t read what is expected, I push it off. I tend to always hit my deadlines, but do so in a hurry which does not help me to actually learn what I am working for. I don’t always procrastinate, but I undeniably do it frequently. I definitely always mean the best- as I want to be the best. Unfortunately, procrastination does not do me any justice. In order to overcome my procrastination I will need to do more than recognize it. Of course, though, it is a very important first step to fixing the problem. Besides understanding procrastination and how it develops, I need to do more research on understanding it and find...

Procrastination

...Procrastination Procrastination is the act of intentionally putting off or not doing something that should be done. Most people deal with some form of procrastination in their lives and this is considered normal. However, delaying essential tasks and putting less important things ahead of them can cause negative consequences. Stress and anxiety are often a direct result of procrastinating as well as a lack of confidence and low self-esteem. Guilt is also associated with procrastination because of the perception of others and the potential disappointment of family and friends based on the lack of success. This character trait causes problems in all age groups and in many areas of life including college students and their achievement of educational goals. Unfortunately for me, procrastinating is a characteristic that affects me as a student and has impacted me greatly. There are many ways to sabotage academic success, but a guaranteed way is through procrastination. Procrastinators self-destruct by making choices that hinder their progress and achievement. This characteristic causes students to look for things to distract them and get them off task. Checking email, texting, and scanning social media like Facebook and Twitter are prime examples of distractions that force students to delay important responsibilities. Procrastinators often lie to themselves. Many are convinced that they will feel better about completing an assignment later or that they will work better...

Locked Into Change

...Glenn Dobson English 101 Anna Zarnecka Speak Memory 9-26-2013 Locked in to Change I often wonder why circumstances beyond our control influence what we become, how it changes are mental abilities into a state of turmoil and determination to change. I’m going to examine how rehabilitation and incarceration go hand in hand in the change process. Although I might have a different point of view on the issues than others, the overall consensus is undeniable refuted about myself. Abstract changes within my being have initiated long term success, and purpose, physically, mentally, and behaviorally. I never could get comfortable with change, but over the years change has become easier. I came to the realization that if I didn’t make some changes my life was going to continue down the road to loss of freedom, loss of the privilege to control my own behavior. Being in prison with a forced structured environment takes away mental stability and physical health, moreover it initiates hours of thinking as if time stood still. The planning procedures to cope with the situation, and the challenges were as if I was running a marathon cross country. I made the decision to change; it was time to identify the problems. I came to the conclusion that most of the changes that I wanted to make ultimately start with the proper way of thinking like the ultimate super computer thoughts became reality, and most of what I didn’t like about myself started in the mind first. I believe one of the...

Procrastination

...Procrastination: A PUPian Student Must Overcome By: Elloso, Princess L. Yan, Rochelle C. Chapter I : Problem and Background A. Background of the study When you look for the meaning of “procrastination” in the dictionary, it says that “it is an act of putting something off until later”. Obviously it is same for the Filipino term “Mañana Habit” means “mamaya na lang”. This habit is something we have learned from the Spaniards. And as we can see, most of the students do this habit. How it works? First of all, you need to do something NOW, but then you decide to do it later. As a result of the delay, you end up not doing it. Now, you tell yourself or somebody that you will do it TOMORROW. And tomorrow comes, the same cycle happens. Procrastination is finding the most difficult way of doing something. It’s jumping from one idea to another. Instead of starting your work, you procrastinate. You’re looking out the window, you’re staring at your neighbour, you’re watching television and you’re wasting your time instead that you have finish your work. In Psychology, there is this thing called “Present Bias”. It means being unable to grasp what you want. A change over time, what you want now isn’t the same thing you will want later. Procrastination is all about choosing WANT over SHOULD because you don’t have a plan for those times when you expect to be tempted. You must be depth at thinking about thinking because there will always be a war on your brain. B. Statement...

Personal Responsibiity

...Personal Responsibility Essay Tramell Arceneaux GEN/200 October 25, 2012 Mr. Ed Williams When it comes to personal responsibilities, everyone has different perspectives. Personal responsibility does not have a set definition. However, personal responsibility deals with one’s personal beliefs. For example, some may feel they are solely responsible for obtaining their class syllabus while others will feel that it is the instructor’s reasonability to make sure students receive the syllabus. There are those that face daily challenges because they do not take personal responsibility. In contrast, there are those who accept their responsibility and succeed far beyond their expectations. Throughout this essay I will describe the personal responsibilities I have and how their association will ensure successful completion of my college education. My own definition of personal responsibility is the ability to do positive things for myself and taking full responsibility for my life. For many adults, personal responsibilities are endless, just about every adult has bills and for those like me, with a spouse and dependents, those personal responsibilities are much greater. Paying the mortgage and bills on time, keeping food on the table and providing whatever other needs are not just things you would do, but are now personal responsibilities. When I get out the bed in the morning to go to work regardless of how I feel takes responsibility, because I have to maintain a career in order...

Hence, the relevant conceptual, theoretical, and empirical work is reviewed, drawing upon correlational, experimental, and qualitative findings. A meta-analysis of procrastination’s possible causes and effects, based on 691 correlations, reveals that neuroticism, rebelliousness, and sensation seeking show only a weak connection. Strong and consistent predictors of procrastination were task aversiveness, task delay, selfefficacy, and impulsiveness, as well as conscientiousness and its facets of self-control, distractibility, organization, and achievement motivation. These effects prove consistent with temporal motivation theory, an integrative hybrid of expectancy theory and hyperbolic discounting. Continued research into procrastination should not be delayed, especially because its prevalence appears to be growing. Keywords: procrastination, irrational delay, pathological decision making, meta-analysis Procrastination is extremely prevalent. Although virtually all of us have at least dallied with dallying, some have made it a way of life. Estimates indicate that 80%–95% of college students engage in procrastination (Ellis & Knaus, 1977; O’Brien, 2002), approximately 75% consider...
