Professional Development of Nursing Professionals
The Institute of Medicine ( IOM) report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health was published in 2010. This report looked at the most trusted profession in the United States, nursing, to recommend practice and insure safe quality care to citizens in the coming years. Through its deliberations, the committee developed four key messages: Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training, nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes seamless academic progression, nurses should be full partners, with physicians and other health care professionals, in redesigning health care in the United States and effective workforce planning and policy making require better data collection and information infrastructure.("Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health," 2013) This paper will focus on the impact of the IOM report on nursing education, nursing practice and the role of nurses.
Impact of the IOM Report on Nursing Education
As centuries pass by, the technology and education needs for members of the healthcare team increase and become more complex. 100 years ago nurse education consisted of 2-3 years of training in a hospital setting ending up with a diploma. In 2010, the IOM report suggested that by 2020, 80% of nurses should be Bachelor prepared. Bachelor degree programs are 4 year programs and provide community health, leadership and research classes in addition to the nursing skill programs.
The recommendation from the IOM has put a burden on the education programs as presently there are not enough BSN programs to support the goal. Additionally as it reported that we will be

...Professional Development of Nursing Professionals Grand Canyon University: 430-V 07/12/2013 Suneeta Sharma The nursing profession has become the largest segment of nation’s health care workforce and has become integral part of health care services, so the future without large numbers of nurses is impossible to vision. The changing landscape of the health care system and the changing profile of population require that the system undergo a fundamental change to provide patient-centered care. To meet the demand for safe, quality, and affordable care will require a fundamental rethinking of the roles of many healthcare professional, including nurses. But nurses are unable to fully participate in the resulting evolution of the US health care system. A number of barriers prevent nurses from being able to respond effectively to rapidly changing health care setting. These barrier need to be overcome to ensure that nurses are well-positioned to lead change and advance health. In 2008, The Robert Wood Johnson and IOM launched a 2 year initiative to response to the need to assess and transform the nursing profession. The IOM appointed the Committee on the RJWF initiative on the Future of Nursing, at the IOM, with the purpose of producing a report that would make recommendations for an action-oriented blue print for the future of nursing. Nurses works in different setting, including hospitals, schools, long-term care centers. They have different level of education from LPN to nurse...

As the needs of patients have become more complex the skills of nurses caring for them must change as well. Nurses must have the requisite skills to deliver high quality patient care and take a leadership role in negotiating the obstacles of our ever changing healthcare system. Adoption of the IOM’s recommendations for the role of nursing in healthcare would drive changes to nursing education, nursing practice and nursing’s role as a leader within the healthcare field. The IOM has identified as a need, the improvement of the education of nurses to better enable them to meet the increasingly complex needs of their patients as well as be actively involved in the reform of the healthcare system. In its report the IOM (2010) states, “Nursing education at all levels needs to provide a better understanding of and experience in care management, quality improvement methods, systems-level change management, and...

...Professional Development of Nursing Professionals Robert Smith Grande Canyon University September 14, 2013 Professional Development of Nursing Professionals In 2010, comprehensive health care legislation was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama. These laws were the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the Health Care and Education Affordability Reconciliation Act, collectively known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The ACA represents the largest changes to health care since the creation of Medicare and Medicaid programs 45 years prior. It is expected to allow more than 32 million Americans to finally afford health insurance. In the same year that the ACA was passed into law, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) wrote a report entitled The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. The report was designed to show that nursing could help lead the future to a better health care system. A system that will meet the changing and challenging demands that will be realized with the implementation of the ACA. By virtue of their regular, close proximity to patients and their scientific understanding of care processes across the continuum of care, nurses have a considerable opportunity to act as full partners with other health professionals and to lead in the improvement and redesign of the health care system and its practice environment (Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, at the Institute...

...Professional Development of Nursing Professionals A committee on Robert Wood Johnson foundation collaborated with the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to develop a project on the future of nursing back in 2008. In 2010 the IOM released a report on the initiative named The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. Part II of the report describes the needed changes of the nursing profession in order to advance the whole health care system. The IOM “envisions a future where primary care and prevention are central drivers of the health care system, inter-professional collaboration and coordination are the norm, and payment for health care services rewards value, not volume of services, and quality care is provided at a price that is affordable for both individuals and society” (IOM, 2010). This report was supported by evidence-based practice which contributed for the high endorsement of the report from the American Nursing Association (ANA). In this paper I would like to focus on three major sections of the project, namely transforming of nursing education, nursing practice and nursing leadership. The report underlines the deep changes in nursing education that need to be implemented in the following years. Even though the main goal of the nursing education remains to prepare the future nurses and nursing specialist to provide quality and safe care to a diverse population, the education needs to evolve in ways that encourage working in teams with other health professionals...

With the common goal of patient centered care, that is created around a specific patient. The U.S Health Care System needs to be transformed, which will require development of new roles for nurses and many other healthcare positions. Nurses must recognize what this means for their specific role and what different educational changes need to be made. Nurses stepping into leadership roles will also be a necessary and vital piece to the success of nursing in the near future (Institute of Medicine, 2011). The introduction of The Affordable Care Act of 2010 has placed a new emphasis on changing the healthcare system. With focusing on the use of primary care, wellness and prevention, and transitional care, while decreasing the use of specialty and acute care. A major focus of the future plans is the need for nurses to use and practice to their full potential, based on educational level and training. ...Professional Development of Nursing Professionals Health care is advancing and changing every single day, every hour, and every minute. Nurses are caring for more critical patients, which require expert knowledge and skill. In order to deliver safe quality care change is needed. According to the IOM, nurses must be prepared to meet the diverse patients’ needs by practicing to the full range of their education, function as leaders, and improve the education system so that it promotes a smooth academic progression (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2010). The IOM desires to transform nursing education. The IOM states, “Nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system” (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2010, p. 163). In the past an associate’s degree (ADN) nurse has been the most common type of nurse, now a baccalaureate degree (BSN) is the preferred nurse. The BSN nurse typically has two more years of education than the ADN nurse. This typically means the BSN nurse will end up paying more for their education but the cost is definitely worth it. The BSN nurse is preferred because of their enhanced critical thinking skills, strong education foundation, and their ability to easily adapt to evolving models of health care. It is predicted that the number of nurses with baccalaureate degrees will increase from 50% to 80% by 2020 (American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN], 2010). Traditional nursing competencies will move...

It states that nurses have a crucial role regarding the quality and value of care. Nurses must sustain a significant transformation if the committee’s vision for healthcare will be accomplished (“The Future of Nursing”, 2010). It also states that the way nurses were taught and practiced during the 1990’s is no longer effective for the care necessary for the times we are in now (“The Future of Nursing”, 2010).
