Sir Randol detailed other disadvantages women faced including the inheritance law of primogeniture and the inadequate maintenance laws for child support. In its particular pursuit of the right to vote for women and its general intention to advance the status of women in the Bahamas, the Suffrage Movement established strategic alliances with the other social movements of this time. It found a strident proponent of its cause in Randol Fawkes, leader of the Bahamas Federation of Labour. History Question 1b

...of the day Wall Street Crashed. Black Tuesday will forever be considered the most significant event in the struggle for majority rule. On that day ,27th April,1967. Sir Lynden Pindling, then leader of the Opposition, during a heated debate over boundaries threw the mace out the window. It all started with the formation of the first political party, Progressive Liberal Party (P.L.P) by the late Sir Henry Taylor, Cyril St. John Stevenson, M.V.D and William Cartwright in 1953.The General Strike of 1958 showed Bahamians what power they had in numbers following this, the British government made changes to the electoral system. The land qualifications were abolished. Women also pushed for the right to vote. In 1961 this was granted and in the 1962 General Elections women voted for the first time. Though the P.L.P expected to win now that women voted they did not. Instead they only won 8 of the 29 seats. In an effort to change the electoral system the P.L.P called for change in the constituency boundaries. The principle of majority rule had been one for which the P.L.P fought long and hard for in the early years of the party, one of its objectives was to see that there was an implementation of majority rule with the greatest possible dispatch. A positive program of preparedness in which Bahamians could be trained to assume and manage their own affairs at all levels. The UBP fought against the change and were uncompromising. The P.L.P sought to change desperate state...

Sunflower Movement in Taiwan

...Sunflower Movement in Taiwan The Sunflower Movement, which was an Anti-Globalization Movement represented a sophisticated understanding movement of globalization from the university students of Taiwan. Between March 18 to April 10, 2014, hundreds of university students and other protestors occupied the chamber of parliament of Taiwan (Legislative Yuan). On March 17, day before the occupation began, the legislature's Internal Affairs Committee was about to begin a three day debate on the Cross-Strait Services Trade Agreement (CSSTA). However, the CSSTA chairman, Chang Ching-Chung, and a member of Taiwan's governing party of the KMT (Kuomintang), had abandoned and bypassed the committee's review and moved straight forward for legislative approval. The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) immediately objected strongly on the floor of the chamber once they recognized the action of the Chairman. On March 18, around three hundred students gathered outside of the Legislative Yuan building, protesting to the Ma Ying-Jeou's government for mishandling the CSSTA. They expressed their frustration by the hasty review of the CSSTA, and demanding an article-by-article review of the trade agreement before moving it to the legislative floor. Finally, the government agreed to postpone the adoption of CSSTA and allowed the Internal Affairs Committee reviews all cross-strait agreement before passing for approval. Students waited until all cross-strait agreements had passed before they...

Black Tuesday

...BLACK TUESDAY “Black Tuesday” began in The Bahamas April 27th 1965.Black Tuesday took place not only inside but outside The House Of Assembly. According to Source B Black Tuesday was possibly one of the greatest events in the movement of Bahamian independence. The PLP (Progressive Liberal Party) was formed November 23rd 1953.The PLP consisted of Sir Lynden Pindling, the late Sir Milo Butler, Mr. Cyril Stevenson, Mr. Sammie Issacs, the late Clarence A. Bain, and the late Sir Randol Fawkes. The formation of the PLP was a first for The Bahamas because it introduced party politics. At this time the majority group in the House was the Bay Street Boys, who later formed the UBP (United Bahamian Party). As mentioned by Source B around the time October 1956 at that time, only a few men, those who owned land, could vote. In addition, a man could vote in as many placed as he owned land, every company that owned land could vote, no woman could vote, and 21 years was the qualifying age. The PLP sought to change this desperate state of affairs and the UBP fought them every inch of the way. Between 1959 and1961, the Women’s Suffrage Movement took up the cause of votes for women and in July 1961, the act of voting for women became law. This was a huge step toward majority rule. The 1962 general election was the first election were all Bahamians including women were allowed to vote. Surprisingly though the UBP won the election over the PLP. This was because workers were threatened to...

Problem of Taiwan

...The Problem of Taiwan The future of Taiwan may provide the Prime Minister with a most testing challenge, writes Hamish McDonald. When, three weeks from now, China celebrates the lunar new year and enters the Year of the Monkey, its leaders will see plenty of mischief already afoot in two of the country's fringe territories. In Taiwan, President Chen Shui-bian's plan to hold a referendum simultaneously with his re-election bid on March 20 is a dangerous tweak at the Beijing dragon's nose, even though the plebiscite only asks the island's 23 million people their predictable opinion about the Chinese ballistic missiles aimed at them. In Hong Kong, the heightened political awareness shown in last July's half-million-strong march against a new security law will almost certainly carry through into elections for the territory's Legislative Council in August, and will increase pressure for constitutional reform to let the successor to Chinese-appointed "chief executive" Tung Chee-hwa be chosen by popular vote when his term ends in 2007. Both developments call for determined diplomacy by the many foreign countries with a strong interest in supporting democratic trends in these two Chinese outposts, in the face of intense hostility by Beijing to any outside "interference" in what it asserts to be purely domestic issues. No country would be more awkwardly caught in the middle of conflicting security and economic interests than Australia if the simmering Taiwan dispute actually...

...Report One Nation, Different Values in China One nation, different values in China- China with its vast population and resources is one of the fastest emerging powerhouses which benefited the most from globalization along with India. So instead of going with the approach of spreading universal values and norms, many companies went in with different values in China. For Google, to enter the Chinese market certain amount of data had to be censored. So Google came up with Google.cn for its Chinese users. Google.cn censored some data on the request of the Chinese Government. But in 2006, search engine companies Yahoo! and Google found themselves in the public spotlight for censoring data that their Chinese users could see. Yahoo! also handed over information to authorities which led to imprisonment of its users. Like in the case of an online writer who was jailed for 8 years for his article on corruption. Political topics such as police brutality, Tibetan independence movement, Taiwan independence were censored. This censoring of data was similar to the case of Star TV’s dropping of BBC from its Chinese networks. Retailers focus is on social and environmental standards for imports to Europe and North America. That is they are more concerned with providing adequate working conditions, proper wages etc. In China, consumers are more concerned with safety and quality issues than with labor or the environment. As labour was easily available and at a cheap rate, it was never a concern...

Reflective Essay 3

...REFLECTIVE ESSAY #4 What a week last week was. Most the lessons touched me in some way. I liked the discipline model and progressive discipline process. It reminded me on how discipline should be handled. I have seen the progressive discipline model in action and when it is was done right it worked. Once again the speech was a little nerve racking, but I got through it. I missed a lot of my introduction because I got flustered. After I got over my initial nervousness the rest was smooth. It flowed pretty good and I had a good closing. Now I know that I need a little more practice with my speech before jumping into it. I know that I can do better on it so I will use my experience on the last two speeches to improve on the next one. Effective negotiations was an eye opener in the aspect that I do a lot of the technics that were taught, but didn’t know I was using them. I am defiantly more integrative then distributive. I like to build that relationship then to “burn the bridge” with people. I try to make sure that everyone is happy with the out come of the discussion and that everyone got what they wanted. Sometimes it’s not possible and I feel like I have failed when that happen. Continuous improvement was a little difficult to wrap my head around at times. As soon as I thought I had a grasp on it I would get the question that was posed wrong. System 1 and system 2 thinking was like that, but by the end of the lesson I had a better understanding of the...

Gilded Era Vs Progressive Era Essay

...Historians still debate whether the Gilded and Progressive eras should be classified as either a “Long Progressive Era” or remaining it as two separate time periods. However in this essay, I will argue that both eras should be divided into two eras due to the rise of third parties, regulations in big businesses and improvements in public health. The historical trends discuss why the Gilded Age should be separated from the years, 1865 to 1879 and the Progressive Era from 1880-1920s. The Gilded Age should be renamed the era of unsolved problems as a result of the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution caused strikes, poverty and the mistreatment of workers. The Progressive era should be rename the era of action, as government increased...

The Progressive Movement

...my opinion, the key principles of the Progressive Movement were democracy, municipal administration, efficiency, the regulation of large corporations and monopolies, social work, and conservationism. In my opinion, the most significant successes of the Progressive Movement were the constitutional amendments and improvements in the democratic process. Our text tells us “The Progressive use of the amendment created lasting effects on our political system and is often considered the greatest success of the entire movement” (Bowles, 2011). The 16th amendment allowed the federal government to begin collecting income tax from all workers. The 17th amendment gave citizens the power to elect U.S. senators and was a result of the direct primary reform in Oregon. This was important because it allowed voters to choose candidates for office instead of political party leaders (The Progressive Era, 2002). The recall, referendum, and initiative are all examples of Progressive reform that brought more democratic power to the common people. The Progressive Movement’s significant failure, in my opinion, was in regard to racial equality. Even though they fell short of their intentions, we must remember how ambitious their goals were. The Progressive Movement missed their target because they aimed to do too much. I do not think that World War I can be regarded as a Progressive conflict. The First World War was a road block to Progressive reform until the rich, who had fought...

Progressive Movement

...The Progressive Era Ryan Keohane The Progressive Era In the present day progressive can be a tricky word to define. It means many things to many people. Simply put by definition it signifies people promoting and applying social reform, or in other words “liberal” ideas. Americans in the 19th and early 20th century acquired the opportunity to witness progressivism first hand in what is known as the progressive era. This movement dealt primarily with political, economic, moral, and social restructuring. The progressive idea gave American people hope for a better life by attacking the unfair abuses and corruption that was occurring. There were highs and lows during this time that I will further discuss throughout this paper. By the year 1890, 9 percent of America’s population controlled 71 percent of the nation’s wealth. This figure shows how much capitalism had really spread. In the year of 1896 the establishment of a progressive reform began way. Americans started to question economic, political, and cultural changes that were arising due to the start of the industrial revolution. These Americans were social reformers known as progressives. They felt that the changes our country was going through required an establishment of new instruction which correlated with the new industrial age. By 1900, cities were becoming more and more crowded. The bad part about this was simply because much of the people were poor workers that suffered terrible working conditions...

...in government on all levels. For example, one could argue that middle class tax cuts are a progressive idea, as it is providing economic relief to those who require it the most, as middle class individuals who are those who are mostly workers and individuals who are not working at the level of an industrialist. When progressivism is seen on a local level it is based out of government helping those who need it the most. Think of local governments that organize food drives or ask shoppers to donate a can of food to a food pantry. These are progressivist ideas in action as they help people to realize that the government can take direct and positive action in helping its citizens. Progressivism also helped redefine the role of American politics locally by instituting such things as secret ballots and non-partisan elections. Progressive reform began at local or city level because it was easier to implement compared to state or national reforms. Urban corruption form political machines were a major focus resulting in the reorganization of local government using the commissioner and city manager styles of management. Allen 2 Progressives redefined the role of American politics state wide also. Reform governors such as Theodore Roosevelt, Kobert Lafollete, and Woodrow Wilson all helped get reforms passed in their respective states. Also reforms first proposed by the populist party were responsive to the needs of the people. They did this with Initiative which allowed voters...

A Fierce Discontent Summary

...Discontent: The Rise and Fall of the Progressive Movement in America written by Michael McGerr is about the development of Progressivism and the large reform movement it called for by making the middle class the dominant class instead of the “Upper Ten.” Progressivism was the idea of transforming America and getting the middle class the power that the progressives thought they deserved. “Progressivism demanded a social transformation that remains at once profoundly impressive and profoundly disturbing a century later” (McGerr XV). Progressivism set the stage for ambitious America that was not quite ready for the change, but still makes an impact to this day with government and reforms. The Progressive movement began when the tension with the “Upper Ten” and when their extravagant lifestyles truly started to show. They were flaunting everything they did from mansions to parties. McGerr lets the readers know how displeased the “others” were with the extravagant celebrations and parties the “Upper Ten” constantly threw. This ended up spurring the ideology for progressivism and the reform the middle class called for....

At this time progressive ranks filled with native born, white middle class urbanities. Then, progressive's attempts to enact social reform depended on them controlling other group’s actions and behavior (Discussion Board-9). For the most part of American history were full of the supremacy of white and the black peoples' activities as a result, there are a lot of unbalanced and one side history information that comes from the history writers (Discussion Board-7).
