...1/32 From Nobel Prize to Project Management: Getting Risks Right by Bent Flyvbjerg, Ph.D. & Dr. Techn. Aalborg University, Denmark Printed in Project Management Journal, vol. 37, no. 3, August 2006, pp. 5-15 See in-print version here: http://flyvbjerg.plan.aau.dk/Publications2006/Nobel-PMJ2006.pdf 2/32 Abstract A major source of risk in project management is inaccurate forecasts of project costs, demand, and other impacts. The paper presents a promising new approach to mitigating such risk, based on theories of decision making under uncertainty which won the 2002 Nobel prize in economics. First, the paper documents inaccuracy and risk in project management. Second, it explains inaccuracy in terms of optimism bias and strategic misrepresentation. Third, the theoretical basis is presented for a promising new method called "reference class forecasting," which achieves accuracy by basing forecasts on actual performance in a reference class of comparable projects and thereby bypassing both optimism bias and strategic misrepresentation. Fourth, the paper presents the first instance of practical reference class forecasting, which concerns cost forecasts for large transportation infrastructure projects. Finally, potentials for and barriers to reference class forecasting are assessed. The American Planning Association Endorses Reference Class Forecasting In April 2005, based on a study of inaccuracy in demand forecasts for public works projects by Flyvbjerg, Holm,......

...founder. IKANO rejuvenated Habitat´s stores, aiming for a more up-market profile than IKEA. The chain stabilised at 36 UK outlets and a similar number elsewhere in Europe, plus franchised stores in 12 other countries. Nonetheless, Habitat experienced losses of about 40 million euros a year for several years. At the end of 2009 IKANO transferred Habitat to Hilco, a private equity group that claims particular expertise in retail restructuring. Tasks and discussion questions: Senior management teams change, so strategy implementation can be likened to a marathon relay. In this light, examine critically the following explanations of Habitat´s decline (give the arguments for your own opinion), being particularly aware of timing: - The predictable consequence of ageing and predatory competition - Continued implementation of a static, inflexible strategy that was unresponsive to critical transition points in time - Poor understanding and implementation of a suitable adaptive strategy. - Just bad luck (Further information about the company: http://www.habitat.co.uk/)...

...Part 1: The Role of the IT Manager in Organizations As the Information Technology (IT) manager for Magnum Enterprises, I know that my role is to integrate software, hardware, and my business management capabilities into a fully functional IT operating business. I am aware that there will be challenges as I assume the position as head of the IT management effort at Magnum. In serving this position, my team and I will make Magnum a better organization. I will take this opportunity to explain how I interpret the role of the IT Manager. IT entails anything related to computer technology. Some of these things include software, hardware, networks, the internet, and everyone that works with any of these systems. Working with these systems includes occupations such as computer programming, computer engineering, technical support, Web development, network administration, and various other related jobs. IT departments are widespread among many organizations for management of the computers, networks, and computer technical areas of their business. Responsibilities of managers can range from overseeing several different areas to focusing only on one particular aspect. These areas often include IT Compliance, Application Development, Project Management, Server Administration, as well as several other areas. The role of IT managers is generally being responsible for engaging many areas of the organization, including distribution, finance, manufacturing, operations, and......

...Project Implementation Scenario 1 The owners of Rose Plumbing want to institute an electronic time entry system to reduce the number of errors that are recorded in the current system. Ideally, the management will have to consider a process so that the plan is successful. First, there is a need to assess the readiness of the firm in that it should have all the requirements to design, implement and use the system. The second step is to plan the approach in a blueprint to define the phases that will be used. Third, the firm will select professionals that are experienced in the application of the system so that they can help with the implementation. Through such an approach, the leadership will consider the various protective measures and effective schemes. Fourth, the owners may have to conduct training to equip the workers with knowledge about the functionality of the structure. Consequently, the workers should provide all the data that is required so that the initiators can use the machine to record the information. Through the various demonstrations, the employees should record the entry and exit time effectively. However, the firm ought to have a backup plan to ascertain the success of the project. Ideally, it should conduct quality improvement strategies to ensure the system will not affect the company negatively. Eventually, it can use the system to record the working period of the staff. Contrastingly, a number of concerns can emerge due to the implementation of......

...IT Project Implementation Failures Tracy Grainger HCS/483 September 19, 2011 Billy Kesserwani IT Project Implementation Failures The IT implementation process begins after an acquisition process. The acquisition process requirements are examined, the request for the proposal is sent, the vendor is chosen and contracts are negotiated and signed. When these parts have been finished the implementation can begin. During the beginning of the implementation the project has to be planned out ahead of time, a team must be selected and the best must be chosen, but problems should always be expected to happen along the line. Some of the IT problems that occur can often be prevented if you are paying close attention. In this particular case study, the implementation process seems to be working well. Dryer and Roberts decided to obtain a CPOE system running for their staff to use. Problems occur when the stakeholders in the faculty believed the system would only be more work for them and would not be very useful to their organization. This is the first sign to indicate a problem is happening. This is the first IT failure within the company. The organization and stakeholders must believe that the system is worth having, be willing to work with it, and believe in the help it will have for the organization. If the stakeholders think the system will fail ultimately then it will fail. They will not work and put forth the effort into the implementation process and training. Dryers and...

Professional Development for Strategic Managers

...scientific software and project management software when performing duties. She or he also must have good communication skills and effective decision-making aptitude. Introduction: Professional development plan is not a new concept, but it is becoming increasingly important. The continuing pace of change in materials science and engineering means that what we learned in our initial training courses soon becomes dated and irrelevant. It has been estimated that the half-life of technical knowledge is about seven years. Furthermore, the amount of knowledge - and the amount of information - continues to increase. Materials science and engineering has become knowledge intensive: we have entered the knowledge-based economy. In this new world, it is impossible for us to know all that there is to know, yet access to the knowledge base is increasingly readily available. So what will make us good materials technologists, rather than poor ones, is that our knowledge is more relevant, and more current, and is applied more efficiently and effectively. The work-place has changed, with the result that materials scientists and engineers are expected to have a wider range of skills. We increasingly work in teams on projects and much of what we do is virtual rather than tangible. As one project ends, another begins, and so we move from project to project, from team to team, and from one work-place to another. 1.1. Methods to evaluate personal kills required to achieve strategic......
