Project Management Overview

...Phase 2 DB 1 MPM210-1404A-06 Project Management Overview Oct 15, 2014 Dr. G. Whenever something has to be accomplished or a project started, most people start thinking before they begin the project with an idea of how they are going to accomplish it. This can vary from the easiest ways to do it to the more complicated ways to how much it is going to cost. Whoever is paying for the endeavor is usually the one that comes up with the idea of what is to be done and a little about how it is going to be accomplished. In the project management world; this person would be called the sponsor and the person accomplishing the actual project details or making it happen would be the project manager. Here I will look at what is detailed in the project charter from the sponsor and the scope statement for the project manager. The project charter is very important because it details certain things for the project manager. The first thing it does is that it formally authorizes the work to be accomplished and gives the project his or her authority to do their job. The project charter will also describe the business need for the project and its expectations or results needed. This charter is usually written outside of the project manager team who can make sure the needs of the project are available for the project manager. Along with the charter, it may also include key assumptions or constraints that could affect the project schedule, budget or quality. It may also contain target...

We do know that there are factors either internal or external that may hamper a project. Projects can be hampered sometimes by bureaucracy from inside the company or by factors of third party providers. Those are things that a manager sometimes cannot help or avoid. The benefits of project management are more than beneficial and allow having a project become cost effective and the system allows order, organization and a process than can be used in all aspects of an organization. Project Management is a system that “provides people with a powerful set of tools that improves their ability to plan, implement, and manage activities to accomplish specific organizational objectives (Larson & Gray, 2010)”. From this first definition, the understanding is that Project Management enhances the planning, implementation and management of a project or activity in order to reach its primary and ultimate organizational goal. Another definition of Project Management is “a results-oriented management style that places a premium on building collaborative relationships among a diverse cast of characters (Larson & Gray, 2010)”. Project Management

...Project Management 1. Discuss the primary function of a project plan. According to the Project Management Book of Knowledge, the project plan is "...a formal, approved document used to guide both project execution and project control. The primary uses of the project plan are to document planning assumptions and decisions, facilitate communication among stakeholders, and document approved scope, cost, and schedule baselines. A project plan may be summarized or detailed." Therefore, the Project plan should document the scope, cost and schedule of a project. These 3 factors together comprise the triple constraint, so called because if any one of these factors changes, the other 2 factors must be adjusted to maintain the quality of the finished product. The project plan also outlines any assumptions about the project and serves as a communication tool amongst stakeholders. The stakeholders are defined as anyone who will be affected by the project. At a minimum, a project plan should answer the following questions: 1) Why-Why is this project being undertaken, what are the goals? 2) What-What work will be completed on this project? What is the scope of the project? 3) Who-Who will be involved in this project and what are their responsibilities? 4) When-What is the timeline, what are the milestones and when do they need to be accomplished? 2.
