Subject: Project Proposal: Migrating to the cloud

Summary
Our servers are old and out of warranty and to bring them up to the latest trends migrating many of our applications to the cloud would probably benefit both our budget and satisfy the needs of our customers. IT Services wants to transition the current ideology of IT services from a “cost center” to an “insurance center” to the rest of the business. I would rather spend monthly dollars on IT to make sure that we have no problems than spend to react to a problem. Spending to react to a problem is not a good strategy because it usually ends up being much more expensive to fix the problem.

What Is my Topic?
Migrating our servers and applications to the cloud will help us reduce operating costs and overhead costs in maintenance, power and cooling, and datacenter space in our current environment. Doing this will allow the IT department to align the IT department’s focus with business goals and needs. Doing this will allow IT to change its stigma of being a “cost center” to a “business driver” that supports the goals and ambitions of the business. What Is the Problem Being Investigated? Many of our applications are accessed by employees and customers who are located outside of our headquarters. Our applications often experience downtime due to an aging infrastructure that is currently in place has not met the demands for the increase in the expectations of our service level agreement that we have in place with our customers.

Why Do You Need to Investigate this Problem?
The cost of running a privately hosted cloud in our own datacenter is not prohibitively high. However to investigate the cost and risks of moving our infrastructure to the cloud may outweigh the costs and risks of hosting our own cloud farm. We want

...IT Project Proposal Background: Our Company is a small regional software developer, specializing in custom applications. In order to cut costs, improve redundancy and many other benefits, the company is deciding to change its current IT infrastructure to better take advantage of cloud computing. The current infrastructure is setup in a very traditional way. The company co-locates dedicated servers to a datacenter to serve as their backbone, utilizing middleware and specialized servers to suit their needs. This means they must pay for their own equipment, bandwidth and other assorted costs associated with the datacenter. In the office, they also have a traditional setup involving routers, switches and some small-scale servers to accommodate office applications. Proposed change: The Company wants to start taking advantage of cloud computing to cut their down costs and simplify their IT structure. By utilizing services such as Amazon’s EC2 and Google’s Enterprise Apps, they believe this would greatly improve the simplicity and cost structure of current IT infrastructure. Instead of hosting their applications and data on dedicated, fully-owned and co-located servers, the company will instead employ the services of Amazon EC2. This will provide them with a simple cost structure, and redundancy, while at the same time removing the need for full-time IT staff to manage it. In addition, instead of paying for licenses to use Microsoft Office (Word,Excel, Outlook, etc), they will...

...days, organizations are looking for IT to operate more efficiently and help to reduce the overall costs. The concept of outsourcing has contributed to this development by transferring entire business functions to an external service provider. A recent phenomenon in the domain of outsourcing is called Cloud Computing. “Clouds are a large pool of easily usable and accessible virtualized resources (such as hardware, development platforms and/or services). These resources can be dynamically re-configured to adjust to a variable load (scale), allowing also for an optimum resource utilization. This pool of resources is typically exploited by a pay-per-use model in which guarantees are offered by the Infrastructure Provider by means of customized SLAs” (Vaquero, 2009). The arrival of the Internet has accelerated the commoditization of IT by providing a perfect delivery channel for generic applications. More and more, companies will fulfill their IT requirements simply by applying pay-as-go utility models, infrastructure services with value added platform services or fee-based infrastructure services with value-added application services (Zhang & Zhou, 2009). In essence, users of cloud computing “outsource” their data processing needs to a third-party...

...Migrating to a Standardized ERP System in a Cloud Computing Environment at ABC Corporation Barbara Ferneyhough Managerial Applications of Information Technology – IS535 (ON) Section B DeVry University, Keller Graduate School of Management December 11, 2011 Course Project Example used with permission from student Migrating to a Standardized ERP System in a Cloud Computing Environment at ABC Corporation Proposal Topic This proposal discusses the use of multiple financial systems throughout ABC Corporation (ABC), the impact that this has upon effective corporate operations and proposes a solution. ABC maintains four different ERP systems (BaaN, PeopleSoft, SAP and Deltek) and a financial consolidation system (Hyperion) across all of its divisions leading to increased IT costs as individual systems must be procured, maintained, and manipulated to provide financial data in a format that is meaningful to the home office for reporting and strategic management purposes. Not only is this a potentially inefficient use of technology, the use of a non-standardized system impacts the ability of management to obtain, manipulate and interpret critical data elements for strategic planning purposes and regular performance monitoring. Problem The business problem to be solved is how to improve operational efficiencies, reduce IT costs, and improve insight into the financial management aspects of the company for improved strategic planning and performance monitoring. Approach ...
