The Pros And Cons Of Social Networking

...1.1 Social Networking Social networks, also known as Information networks, are typically represented by a graph where nodes are data points and edges represent relationships which shows interconnected records. In social network a relationship is represented by the interaction network of individuals that are often connected to each other. But at first glance these relationships may seem simple upon further inspection they can form interesting structures. For instance, in a social network a relevant structure is materialized as notion of community. There is no clear definition for a community, but a reasonable explanation proposes that the nodes in a community are not connected to other nodes rather they are connected to each other. However, the relationships between nodes in a community have something in common that distinguishes them from other nodes. 1.1.1 Recommendation In the new era, Recommendation systems play major role because it has changed the way people find products, information and even other people. ...The article entitled ‘What are the pros and cons of social networking sites?’ written by Strickland reports on the pros and cons of social networking sites. One of the pros of social networking sites is that it allows users to make connections with other people. Besides that, users can also use these sites to network professionally and help someone else out. Social networking sites also make it easy to organise an event and invite friends. Furthermore, social networking sites can also be used to promote an artiste’s or actor’s work. Several social networking sites also act as application platforms. Lastly, social networking can help to get a person out of jail. However, there are also some cons of social networking sites. One of the cons of social networking sites is that it makes identity theft easier. Furthermore, scammers also use social networking sites to trick people into downloading malicious software. Finally, social networking can be both overwhelming and addictive at the same time. Among the pros and cons of social networking sites stated by Strickland, I agree with one of the pros saying that social networking sites allow users to make connection with other people. Social networking sites are easy and effortless way to communicate with friends and family when we are unable to get in touch due to time and distance constraints. Are Social Networking Sites Beneficial to the Society or Not?

...Are Social Networking Sites Beneficial to the Society or Not? Social networking sites are great for our society, due to its promotion increased interactions and connection between millions of people throughout the world. I personally am in favor of social networking sites because it allows people to create new relations and reconnect with their friends and family members. In addition, the reputation of social networking sites such as FaceBook, Twitter, and Linkedln, more than doubled from year 2005 to year 2009. These sites allowed all users to develop their online profiles of their background and interests as well as share thoughts, photos, links, music, and more (are social sites…for our society?). However, many argue that social networking sites attract people to spend more time online and less time with face-to-face interactions. Also, opponents say that the social networking sites provide many time wasting activities which replace the productive activities. According to the article, Are Social Networking Sites Good or Bad for Our Society? Teens spend an average of nine hours per week on social networking sites. The opposition states that teens growing up with these social networking sites may not be aware that all the information and photos posted on these networking sites can be regained even after deletion. The opponents also states that the consequences of over-sharing personal information and photos can lead to vulnerability to sexual and financial predators. It can...

Brown II May 29, 2011 Does An Employer Have The Right To Utilize Information Posted On Social Networks When Making Employment Decisions? Introduction Do employers have the right to use information posted on social networks, such as Facebook, Twitter, and My Space for employment decisions? With the popularity of such websites, employers now have a no-cost way to look up a potential employee’s habits, etc. Employers are not only using them for potential employees, but also for their current staff. Some of what employers are looking at includes status postings, comments, and inappropriate or racy pictures. There have been several lawsuits on this topic from employees that have been fired due to posts or pictures made to their facebook wall. This practice has not been deemed against the law, but there is much debate on how this information should or can be used. This paper will discus the pros and cons of using this type of information and also offer some suggestions on how to do it without being sued. One of the first media sites to come out with was My Space didn’t have too much dealings with this except I accepted a lot of friends that I knew, in passing, acquaintances or my close friends. This was neat to get in touch with someone you haven’t seen in a while. That’s about all though. Once specific that I can tell you negative was a friend of mine got a divorce over this website social media type, his wife was talking to old boy friend’s and then later meeting them physically and would not stop so they unfortunately got a divorce and separated this was very sad to see personally. Let’s look at some of the statistics involved with these sites especially of the impact on the person and social life of people and businesses. Is Social networking creating a safe environment or creating chaos? Some of the social networking sites have caused people to lose their identity, predators have lured children away from home, but yet some people have reunited with friends and family, and are able to communicate with them on a daily bases. Networking sites like YouTube has created a marketing environment as well as education. LinkedIn, has helped to create more jobs and recruiting, while Facebook has helped people stay in touch with each other. Emails and texting have replaced extra phone calls. Ideologies and Cultural Patterns Facebook, a tool for people to communicate, has over 1.4 billion users, YouTube has 490 million user per month and Twitter has 190 million tweets per day. These facts show just how much society is communicating through social networking sites. News spreads faster through these sites but can also give false information just as fast.
