A Look at the Loyalist Cause
When many Americans think of the Loyalist or Tory cause, the stereotypes of a prim and proper aristocrat with a British accent and a tarred-and feathered tax collector quickly surface. When examining the views and motivations of over two-and-a-half-million people living in the Thirteen Colonies during the Revolution, hardly any views were uniform. Even supporters of a major faction such as the Loyalists had a diverse array of misgivings about the rebellion against the British Crown. Many Americans opposed the Revolution for a wide variety of reasons: most notably, personal ties and attachment to Britain. These attachments took several forms, including fear and intimidation from mob rule, as well as religious and …show more content…
To protect themselves, many clergymen fled and closed their churches. Additionally, clergymen were some of the most well-educated men in colonial American society, and as a result many in the clergy as well as loyalists overall were also very reliant on Britain for their economic livelihoods, and opposed the Revolution on economic grounds. Many sectors of American commerce were very reliant on strong British ties. Some like merchants, required British goods to import and sell, in addition to protection of merchant fleets by the Royal Navy. Samuel Johnson, a noted British writer of the time, summarized the economic relationship between Britain and America in the pamphlet Taxation No Tyranny:
Nothing dejects a trader like the interruption of his profits. A commercial people, however magnanimous, shrinks at the thought of declining traffick and an unfavourable balance…That the Americans are able to bear taxation, is indubitable…Of every empire all the subordinate communities are liable to taxation, because they all share the benefit of government, and, therefore, ought to furnish their proportion of the …show more content…
Crevecoeur, like many Tories, fled their homes, never to return. Many fled the colonies altogether, settling in places like Canada or Florida after the war. In New York, Native American groups, such as the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy tended to favor the British in the Revolutionary War. This is evident in the petition of Sarah McGinn which stated:
An Indian was going with a Belt of Wampam to the different Indians from General Schulyer acquainting all the Six Nations that all the King’s Troops had been defeated and taken Prisoner at Saratoga by the American Army… which Belt your pensioner stopt and prevailed upon the Indian to carry an account of a different Nature favorable to Government and encouraged the Six Nations, who soon afterward went to war against the Rebels on the Frontiers.

This shows that Loyalists often had to engage in covert manipulations to assist the British war effort, particularly when the Rebels seemed to have the upper hand. Yet, Native Americans were not only nonwhite group to favor the British. Many enslaved African-Americans in the South also took up arms for

The article then begins to describe the industry and various competition within it, and how they do business. There is some information on market trends in home viewing of movies, but most importantly the meat of the article discusses Netflix’s business model and strategy in detail. The one primary problem/key issue facing Netflix is how it will continue to remain the subscription-based leader in the instant movie streaming/DVD delivery industry. There are many rival competitors emerging offering a wide variety of services and options to consumers, and it is important Netflix modifies its business model/strategy and uses its brand recognition/positive traits efficiently. The best-case scenario is Netflix modifies its strategy to once again differentiate itself from competition. Also, it would be ideal that for the global markets targeted to generate massive revenue/profits. The likely scenario is that Netflix will steadily improve internationally, but retain a firm hold of those markets before anyone else has. Also, it is likely that Netflix will remain prominent but will be in tough competition with rivals such as Amazon Prime and Hulu...

They strive on their quality and ability to produce always fresh never frozen bratwurst, breakfast sausage and patties as well as their recently launched Vivio Italian brand of sausage. The Vivio brand never received the attention that it required however now with the Italian sausage market growing annually at a rapid pace they have hired Ann Banks to create a marketing plan and launch the Italian sausage product properly. Ann decided to keep the name Vivio Italian Sausage but add that it was from Saxonville because everyone knew their reputation of quality, healthfulness and freshness in their pork product. In addition to the name of the brand Ann added “ A family tradition for 70 years” to the label giving the product an emotional feel for the potential consumer. The target market that was chosen was the “Home Maker Mom” due to the research provided by the Director of Market research Laura Bishops. The Home Maker Mom was 93% of user and the family member most frequently preparing dinner. Furthermore because of the family background and Italian symbolising family Ann decided it was best to promote the “Family Connection” as oppose to “Creative Cooking.” Ann will price the product a little higher than their competitors to remain complementary to the high quality they offered. It did not react-at least not uatil far too late. Harley-Davidson considered itself the market leader in full-size motorcycles. While the company might shudder at the image tied in with its product's usage by the leather-jacket types, it took solace in knowing that almost every U.S. police department used its machines. Perhaps this is what led Harley to stand aside and complacently watch Honda make deep inroads into the American motorcycle market. The management saw no threat in Honda's thrust into the market with lightweight machines. The Harley attitude was exemplified in this statement by William H. Davidson, president of the company and son of the founder: Basically, we don't believe in the lightweight market. We believe that motorcycles are sport vehicles, not transportation vehicles. Even if a man says he bought a motorcycle for transportation, it's generally for leisure-time use. History of Puerto Rico

...Identification. Christopher Columbus landed in Puerto Rico in 1493, during his second voyage, naming it San Juan Bautista. The Taínos, the indigenous people, called the island Boriquén Tierra del alto señor ("Land of the Noble Lord"). In 1508, the Spanish granted settlement rights to Juan Ponce de León, who established a settlement at Caparra and became the first governor. In 1519 Caparra had to be relocated to a nearby coastal islet with a healthier environment; it was renamed Puerto Rico ("Rich Port") for its harbor, among the world's best natural bays. The two names were switched over the centuries: the island became Puerto Rico and its capital San Juan. The United States anglicized the name to "Porto Rico" when it occupied the island in 1898 after the Spanish-American War. This spelling was discontinued in 1932. Puerto Ricans are a Caribbean people who regard themselves as citizens of a distinctive island nation in spite of their colonial condition and U.S. citizenship. This sense of uniqueness also shapes their migrant experience and relationship with other ethnoracial groups in the United States. However, this cultural nationalism coexists with a desire for association with the United States as a state or in the current semiautonomous commonwealth status. Location and Geography. Puerto Rico is the easternmost and smallest of the Greater Antilles, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Basin to the south. Puerto Rico is a crucial hemispheric access...

Accountability and Rhetoric During a Crisis

...Accountability and Rhetoric during a Crisis: Walt Disney’s 1940 Letter to Stockholders Joel H. Amcrnic UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO and Russell J. Craig AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY ACCOUNTABILITY AND RHETORIC DURING A CRISIS: WALT DISNEY’S 1940 LETTER TO STOCKHOLDERS Abstract: In 1940, Walt Disney was faced with crafting a message of corporate accountability under duress. His company, the product of his creative genius, had been forced to submit to public accountability. It had a pressing need to raise preferred equity finance for a major expansion during a period of market uncertainty, war, and reported losses. This paper conducts a “close reading” of the “Letter to Stockholders” in Walt Disney Productions’ 1940 annual report, the first such letter signed by Walt Disney. The letter’s rhetorical features, including metaphor and ideology, are examined in the context of the times. What is revealed is an accountability document skillfully crafted with the exigencies faced by Disney’s company firmly in mind. The letter offers suggestive insight to the world as Disney made sense of it. The paper contributes to understanding the use of rhetoric by top management in activities related to aspects of financial accountability and reporting. It also helps to understand better a significant public persona of the 20th century, Walt Disnev. Acknowledgment The authors wish to acknowledge the helpful comments of the reviewers. Biographical Analysis

...State versus Private Ownership Andrei Shleifer Department of Economics Harvard University Cambridge, Massachusetts. Abstract Private ownership should generally be preferred to public ownership when the incentives to innovate and to contain costs must be strong. In essence, this is the case for capitalism over socialism, explaining the "dynamic vitality" of free enterprise. The great economists of the 1930s and 1940s failed to see the dangers of socialism in part because they focused on the role of prices under socialism and capitalism, and ignored the enormous importance of ownership as the source of capitalist incentives to innovate. Moreover, many of the concerns that private firms fail to address “social goals” can be addressed through government contracting and regulation, without resort to government ownership. The case for private provision only becomes stronger when competition between suppliers, reputational mechanisms, the possibility of provision by private not-for-profit firms, as well as political patronage and corruption, are brought into play. 1 What kinds of goods and services should be provided by government employees as opposed to private firms? Should government workers make steel and cars in government-owned factories? Should teachers and doctors be publicly employed or should they work for private schools and practices? Should garbage be picked up by civil servants or employees of private garbage haulers? Should the whole economy be "socialized"? Although...

Ambani Story

...NTRODUCTION: AN INVITATION TO BOMBAY The envelope was hand-delivered to our house in Golf Links, Tan enclave in New Delhi whose name captured the clubbable lifestyle of its leisured and propertied Indian residents, soon after we had arrived in the middle of a north Indian winter to begin a long assignment. It contained a large card, with a picture embossed in red and gold of the elephant-headed deity Ganesh, improbably carried on the back of a much smaller mouse. Dhirubhai and Kokilaben Ambani invited us to the wedding of their son Anil to Tina Munim in Bombay. In January 1991, just prior to the explosion in car ownership that in later winters kept the midday warmth trapped in a throat-tearing haze overnight, it was bitterly cold most of the time in Delhi. Our furniture had still not arrived-a day of negotiations about the duty payable lay ahead at the Delhi customs office where the container was broken open and inspected-and we camped on office chairs and fold-up beds, wrapped in blankets. The Indian story was also in a state of suspension, waiting for something to happen. The Gulf War, which we watched at a big hotel on this new thing called satellite television, was under- cutting many of the assumptions on which the Congress Party’s family dynasty, the Nehrus and Gandhis, had built up the Indian state. The Americans were unleashing a new generation of weap- ons on a Third World regime to which New Delhi had been close; its Soviet friends were standing by, even agreeing with...
