Harry Truman once said, “America was not built on fear. American was built on courage, on imagination, and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand”. So therefore our country was built with all these great things and ideas in mind. America is still a growing nation and we can get stronger. We have room to better ourselves, we as Americans can be better. This great nation that I live in was built on unbeatable determination to do the job at hand. That means we can do the work and have the determination to do it. The kind of America that I believe in is a growing, confused country. We as the citizens have so much going on right now in our thriving country. Another way that I think of our country is that we are free to do whatever we want. We don’t have to have permission to cross our borders or stuff like that like other countries have. America itself is the greatest country but it has a lot of flaws. It has a lot of problems right now and we are doing literally nothing about all the problems in our country. …show more content…
People think this,” If we are a free country why are people getting treated how they are treated”? Like Colin Kaepernick said” I am not standing up to show pride in a flag that oppresses black and colored people”. To me that is a way of saying that America isn’t perfect but also treating the people differently for an unknown reason. America is a country where you can be free but treated and looked at different by the government. The government is trustworthy but we can’t believe what they always say. Conclusion: When I think about America I think of a strong, growing, confused country. What kind of America I believe in is a great country with people that think America isn’t great but hey America is still a young country, we’re still

An American should always be brave and willing. Americans should be very patriotic and proud. America was built out of hard work and dedication. Our Founding Fathers worked hard to make America free! Se Habla Espanol Summary and Response

...Summary and Personal Responses to Tanya Maria Barrientos’s “Se Habla Espanol” English 115 July 13, 2014 In her essay “Se Habla Espanol” Tanya Maria Barrientos expresses her struggle of being a pure Latina who doesn’t speak Spanish. Being born in Guatemala, a Spanish speaking country, she and her family moved to the United States of America at three years old. (Barrientos, 2011) now living in Texas her parents made the decision that their children would cease speaking Spanish only to speak, read, and write English molding them into America’s Anglo culture. Barrientos set out to defy the stereotypes being placed on brown people while at the same time believing them herself. She stated “To me, speaking Spanish translated into being poor. It meant waiting tables and cleaning hotel rooms.” (Barrientos) Not being seen as Mexican was a compliment in her eyes while not speaking Spanish equated to being white. Clearly she was not proud of her heritage and at the age of 16 in attempt to reverse the disdain for her culture Barrientos was sent to Mexico for the summer by her father. To her surprise pride emerged but created a new dilemma. How can you be a proud Latina and not speak Spanish? She set out to learn it. After taking several Spanish classes she continued to feel laughable around native Spanish speakers. Not only did she struggle with the language but with the fact that she was now frowned upon as a Spanish woman who can’t speak the language. Barrientos eventually...

Peaceful Law Resistance In The 1950's

...In the early 1950's Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., and countless other African Americans as well as White Americans fought together for a cause that was against Segregation and the Jim Crow Laws. They were feeling the effects of racism from the Civil War back in the 1800's. African Americans were not being treated kindly, neither were the White Americans who befriended them. Those who fought against the Jim Crow Laws weren't just fighting to be rebellious against the nation, but they were fighting to be free of an unjust unconstitutional law that was established and enforced by our Government. When I say they were "fighting" that law I do not mean they were actually throwing riots and chaos everywhere they went. They were more so doing peace rally's. They had peaceful sit-ins, they drove a bus around the country, they had conferences and speeches. They were not doing what today's rebellions are trying to justify as "peaceful". They still stood for the Red, White, and Blue. They obeyed civil laws, they did not kill, nor did they light towns on fire. The MLK group only wanted others to feel love for them, to accept them into society, and to be treated as real Americans with real...

The fundamental principle of mediation is “Self Determination” and I plan to abide by this for the rest of my life. We learned how to deal with conflicts in the home, school, field, workplace, etc. We learned the five styles of conflict, “Collaboration”, both parties agree, “Accommodation”, make someone happy, “Competition”, power struggle, “Avoidance”, don’t deal with it, and “Compromise”, each side makes a concession. While studying these styles of conflict in class I reflected on my pass and present conflicts and understood the difference in how they were handled, not knowing there was a word for styles of conflict management at that time. We also learned the roles of in conflict management. You have the “negotiator” gets involved in creating a deal,...

French Stereotype

...generalizations out of their characteristics and to consider these characteristics as applicable to all people of the same class. Stereotyping is defined as the process where an individual create in his mind an image of another person (Macrae, Stangor & Hewstone 3). It is also defined as “a fixed, commonly held notion or image of a person or group, based on an oversimplification of some observed or imagined trait of behavior or appearance” (Media Awareness Network). Even though we are unique and distinct from each other, it is part of human nature to make generalizations of people belonging to a specific race and nationality. These generalizations are being reinforced in movies, televisions, novels and other forms of mass media. This essay seeks to highlight the different French stereotypes being portrayed in mass media and to establish that these stereotypes are not necessarily accurate representations of the French people. Stereotyping has a positive and negative effect not only to the person being referred to but also to the community in general. When an individual creates a mental image of somebody and put that in his mind, he also acts in accordance with this stereotype. The stereotyped images serve as a person’s paradigm through which he sees the world. As a result, he behaves and acts in accordance with this stereotype. The problem is that not all of these stereotypes are true. In fact, most of these stereotypes which are being reinforced in movies, televisions...

Summary Of The Plastic Pink Flamingo

... hope, and overall uniqueness. However apart from nature, this profound lawn kitsch became a national icon throughout the American population. In the essay, "The Plastic Pink Flamingo: A Natural History," Jennifer Price immersively thrusts the reader into the vibrantly explosive 1950s where they are greeted by the extensive and avian cultural phenomenon known as the plastic flamingo. Throughout the essay, Price juxtaposes the tropical flamingo with its mass produced doppelgänger. Using terminology such as "When the pink flamingo splashed into the fifties…” she communicates the similarities between these two different specimen. As she vocalizes the history of the flamingo, as well as pecks around her own opinions, she refers to the artificial winged creature as if it is no different than the authentic one. The two creatures, though very diverse, are brought together in comparisons that apply to both in separate ways causing the reader to see that the sarcasm as well as the literalism that is present in the passage....

...reader what I will be covering in the essay they are reading, “Bradford creates a foundation for American success and inspires people to promote the value of responsibility and freedom through his leadership, leadership qualities, and through the journey he faced coming into the New World - all of which are evidenced in his narrative, “Of Plymouths Plantation.” This thesis statement is as clear as water and has improved over the course of the class. Another way in which I have improved as a writer is with the evidence that I have chosen to incorporate into my essays, “ Bradford was governor of Plymouth for thirty, one year terms and his Pilgrims described him as an open minded and thorough leader - traits for a successful leader at such a time of new beginning.” The evidence that was used in this statement supports my chosen thesis and supports my essay along with showing how Bradford was a good leader, and why he was. One of the things that I am most proud of about my skills as a writer is my use of transition sentences and their quality that they bring to the essay. “Not only did Bradford display wonderful leadership qualities, he put them to use as well.,” and “Bradford was not only an inspiration to people in the sense of promoting personal responsibility, but also in the sense of promoting personal freedom,” were both used in writing prompt one and added to the flow and smoothness to the essay. African American Portrayal in Life Magazine !937

...as so we do not offend one type of minority or another. Today we must be carful with what we say because our words can be twisted into racist statements without us realizing it. For my essay assignment I decided to see how the early publications of Life dealt with the challenges presented to journalism today. To see Life at the earliest stages of publishing could present to me an idea of how minorities, specifically African Americans in my research, were portrayed by the media. The year 1937 had many different portrayals of African Americans, however three common ideas highlighted how Life portrayed African Americans in 1937: the idea that African Americans are trouble to society, the idea that African Americans can have a prominent place in society, and the idea that African Americans were still considered property and in many instances liked it that way. I believe that these are understandable ideas and portrayals even though they may be frowned upon in today’s society. The first portrayal mentioned is how African American’s were, or caused, trouble. The first example is Joshua Cockburn’s troubles while moving into a new neighborhood. The Cockburn family had just moved into their new house before their Caucasian neighbor took the family to court because they neighbor felt African Americans could not live in the neighborhood. The article did not show any sympathy toward the Cockburn family and reported this story in a sense that made readers think that the Cockburn family...

Essay Ii

...Essay II A The following paper is an analysis of the three texts “Why They Serve”, “A soldier’s story: War affects whole family” and “The Making of a Marine Officer”. In the paper will be discussed the different opinions and views on the military and serving the army. Why people are willing to risk their lives to serve their country and what motivates people to join the army despite the consequences and the hazardous drawbacks. Give an outline of the various views on serving the army presented in the three texts. There are a lot of different opinions on serving the army. People are different; have different values, norms and we all have a diverse view on our nation and on war. Some of these views and opinions are expressed in the three texts. Sarah Palin describes her son’s deployment with the army and career as a soldier with great pride: “That day I was just one of thousands of proud but wary American women. I was the mom of a young soldier being sent overseas to defend our country.” She was proud to have a son who was eager to fight for his country. I believe she was even prouder because she was vice-presidential running mate – she was in the running to become one of the highest ranked females in America. She was very patriotic and believed in America as the greatest nation. This is shown in the text “Why they serve”: “But America isn’t just another country, it’s an exceptional country. We are the only country in the history of the world that was founded not on...

...the past several decades, American lawns have been transformed, from the simple picket fence front lawns to the garden gnomes. Possessing a different persona, one with functionality in mind and the other with fashion and comedy in mind. They paved the way for an even brighter and more obnoxious yard accessory: the pink flamingo.       Jennifer Price’s essay, “The Plastic Flamingo: A Natural History” is amusing, witty, and at times disparaging to American society. It is surprisingly informative and can surely cause even the most loyal Florida natives to rethink the plastic, pink bird strutting about their garden. Though Price may seem to be merely providing information about these flamboyant flamingos, her clever readers can easily sense a stronger voice lingering amongst the somewhat trivial facts.       In her essay Price comments on the irony of the bright flamingo, stating that, “Americans had hunted flamingos…for plumes and meat.” Not only had early Florida natives hunted them, but also they had nearly driven them to extinction! It seems that Price finds the situation humorous. Are Americans so proud of ridding our country of flamingos that we feel the need to display their plastic replicas in front of our homes? Price dismisses this thought with a touch of sarcasm.       The plastic birds were originally souvenirs from Florida. The energy of the colorful flamingos sparked new business across the state, something Price focuses on in her essay. Stemming from Miami’s first...
