Reflection Paper 1 What I learnt from Proverbs, Esther and Joseph about what it means to be human. The reason why I transferred to Trinity Western University is because I wanted a deeper understanding of my faith and what it meant to be a believer of God. For as long as I can remember, I have always said, when asked that I am Christian but in truth, I never ever did what a Christian does to maintain their faith.
I started Rels 101 in the second week of the semester and I had absolutely no idea what the class would be all about. I came to class without a bible, course pack and the required text book. I was a few minutes late and within minutes of getting comfortable I realized the Book of Proverbs was the topic of discussion. This excited me because it's been something I had always wanted to finally read and understand. As you have already guessed, I am not the best “Christian” around and before this, my bible sat at the bottom of my self collecting dust. Dirk Büchener, my professor spoke with so much passion explaining a verse suggested by a student and this grabbed my attention. That day was the day when I first opened my Bible App on my phone. Little did I know that a book so small held so much wisdom. The introduction of Proverbs immediately grabs the readers attention as it says in chapter 1 vs 5 that “let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance(.)” As someone who is seeking guidance and wanting to be a better person really appreciated reading this. This was talking about me, a person trying to build more on my faith in God. As I read on, I realized what many lessons this book contained. Lessons on friendship, marriage, wealth, lust, speech control but to mention a few. Without even knowing what the other books of the Bible contain I know this will be my favourite of them all. I will always revisit it, to study the wise words. The advise on speech control and anger management is something that I really needed to read. The verse that stood out the most about this is Proverbs 15 vs 1 which says “a gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” These words, even though short moved something within me because my temper is something I want to work on. With these few words I realized that not every battle needs to be fought, I don't always have to talk back when angry because this only creates a big situation out of something that could have been resolved with words spoken gently. I reflected on this verse and made a promise to myself that I will always measure my words no matter what. That day, I picked up my phone and told my boyfriend that I was sorry for all the harsh words that have ever escaped my mouth when angry. I then realized that I need to lower my expectations of people because we are all humans and this means that mistakes will be made. My goal after learning this is to have realistic expectations of people and realizing we are broken and this makes us human. The Professor did an amazing job of interpreting what the verses meant. The lesson on neighbours being that people will always be in need. Being human is to live in such a way that one should extend their hand to people in need. The lesson on friendship is also one that I really needed to hear. Friendships are delicate in that they need to be carefully me and protected. The proverbs on friendship reminded me on a verse my mom always told me when I was younger, 1st Corinthians 15:33 “do not be mislead: bad company corrupts good character.” This verse got me out of a lot of trouble growing up, I was always careful of people who I invited into my space. Reading the many verses on friendship was a beautiful reminder of why having a valuable friend is important because only then will your character be pure. There is a common theme in Proverbs, this being that good deeds will be rewarded and that evil deeds will be punished. In simple words, these are incentives to the human race. However, I love how this books is not hypocritical because surely there is not one person who is without mistakes on earth. We don't always do things right the first time but making mistakes, failing at something, is just part of this thing called life. Being wise is learning from mistakes of the past and living according to the the guidelines of proverbs. I have learnt that a wise person learns not only from their mistakes but from other people's mistakes as well. According to Proverbs, being wise is being able to take correction from people. This is emphasized from the very beginning in Proverbs 1:7 “… fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Apart from the obvious meaning of these words we can learn that we should be open to correction and guidelines bad human beings as there is no person too wise to add to their wisdom. The stories of Esther and Joseph are great practical examples of most of the lessons taught in Proverbs. The story of Joseph revisited now as an adult makes a lot more sense that it did she told me me when I was young. My biggest lesson from Joseph is to remain pure and faithful in the lord even when faced with hardships. All the horrible things that happened to Joseph such as being hated by his own brothers to an extend of being sold into slavery and then being cast into prison for something he did not do by someone who knew him explicitly would have turned him into a different person all together. Hardships truly test someone's character and Joseph’s is one that admire. Instead of being angry, resentful and plotting revenge against the people who wronged him, he left it up to God and trusted him. The only way any person can get out of such hardships is acceptance. Accepting such circumstances is the only way you can properly heal from them and become such a better person. Often times, the people you trust wholeheartedly are the ones who cause you the most pain. You can either choose to have a bitter heart, dwell on it, want to seek vengeance or be like Joseph. Another lesson from Joseph is hardwork. Only through hardwork was Joseph recognized and that's when his talent of telling dreams was known. It didn't matter where he was, in the comfort of Potiphar and in prison but he still worked hard without resentment and this is how he was rewarded. Patience is something that I luck that made me admire Joseph so much. He endured through trials with patience knowing a blessing would come. I on the other hand tends to get into a depression if things don't go my way. The thing to get from this is to trust God and wait for a blessing to come. I learnt tags I need to always remember God has my back and to always patiently endure. Integrity is doing the right thing knowing that nobody’s going to know whether you did it or not. Joseph teaches us this when he manages to abstain from committing adultery even when he was faced in a very tempting situation. Had he committed adultery with Potiphar’s wife, no one would have probably found out but he didn't any way. Had he accepted her advances he would have perhaps escaped prison. This is an amazing lesson everyone needs to pick up from him. Giving into such temptation would have hindered God’s blessings. Also, had he not gone to prison, no one would have found out about his dream interpretation gift. So we need to realize that good things do come out from unfortunate situations. Joseph continues to astonish me as a person, he was not only the things mentioned above but also humble. The way he immediately gave credit to the Lord when called in front of the King was amazing. After coming through a trail we need to realize that who helps us is the lord and not ourselves. Being able to tell dreams was Gods gift to him and no his own doing. It is through God’s gift that he was able to get out of suffering. God continues to bless Joseph because of his humility. However we should not be selfish with these gifts. Joseph would have chosen to keep quiet in order to punish the people who enslaved him. From this we should learn to do good to everyone even those who wrong us.
Lastly, we are reminded of the importance of forgiveness from Joseph. When he revealed to his brothers who he was, the reader could tell that he had already accepted the situation and forgiven them. He looked at what could have been perceived as a bad situation as a good one because God intended him to help him save the people from the suffering that could have been without him. I have learnt that when you forgive you let go of the bitterness and anger that can keep you from progressing. You can only focus on the lessons when you accept a situation and forgive like Joseph did. Esther, like Joseph was a very amazing person to gain lessons from. Like Joseph she was a Jew living in a foreign land and was honoured. She was recognized for her grace, kindness and beauty. I love how among many beautiful girls what made her stand out was the way she carried herself such that her beauty was just a bonus. While the girls aimed at only pleasing the king she was also kind to everyone else around her such that she was recognized. This is a lot like how Joseph did not segregate who he shared his talents with. The maids who took care of the Virgins can be looked at like the prisons who were with Joseph in his cell. What we learn from this is to be kind to everyone. Another lesson is sacrifice. Esther was willing to sacrifice her self for the well being of her people. She didn't need to reveal that she was a Jew but she did so that she could save them and this is very admirable. She would have been selfish and forgotten her cousin Mordecai who took care of her when she was just poor and abandoned everyone else. Her not forgetting where she was from and ensuring the safety of her people was very gracious of her. The same way God did not give Joseph his talent for him alone, Esther was not given her beauty for her alone but in order to deliver The Jews from the evil.
Obedience is another important lesson from the story of Esther. She listened to Mordecai and because of this she was rewarded. This reminds me of the scripture in Proverbs 1 vs 8 that talks about obedience of our mothers and fathers. In this case Mordecai was Esthers parent because he took up the role of the father to Esther when she was orphaned. Her obedience to him is what made God reward her by the king not choosing to kill her and sparing the Jews. With the lessons above, the ones I found in Proverbs, the story of Joseph and Esther, I could clearly identify my flaws and what characteristics I wanted to keep and continue to work on. Also moving forward it makes it easy to identity what kind of people I want around me and who I want to be for people. It certainly taught me who I do not want to be.
I don't want to be like the power hungry Haman, who wanted to get rid of the entire race just because his demands were not met. The punishments told in Proverbs did come to pass. The evil man that he was paid for his deeds.
The thing that stands out about The Book of Esther is how familiar that world is. Its almost like if not exactly what goes on in this world. Haman represents people who ‘other’ people who seem different from them. The reason why our world has so much human suffering is because people like Haman refuse to realize that people are different and there is nothing wrong with this fact. When people like him are intimidated they resort to violence. If a person relates to Haman after reading Esther they should understand that no bad deed goes unpunished. They should change for the better before facing what Haman did. Out of all this, the story I mostly identified with is the story of Joseph. My fathers tribe believes that the more women a man has, the better. So I have 3 step mothers and 5 siblings. This reminds me of Isreal and his different wives. This however is the part of the story I disliked because it reminded me of what I hate about my family. Growing up, my father seemed to favour me amongst all my siblings and this made my childhood not an amazing one. It was easy for me to point out Isreals favouritism towards Joseph because of my first hand experience. My siblings made it a point to mistreat me when my parents weren't home because they did not like how I got favor. In a way, I understand them now and I wish that I closely read the story when I was still going through their mistreatment. It's because of this yhat my relationship with them hasn't been the best. This story impacted me so much such that a few days ago I sent a message to my older brother asking him to try and build a closer relationship with me and I promised to do my part. Like Joseph I want to have a forgiving heart and not resent the people who have wronged me in the past and now moving forward. I now realize that I have a purpose here on earth and everything that happens to me is for a reason and one day I will be able to look back and understand why. As for my father like Isreal, I know he doesn't know his wrong doings and didn't intend for my sibling and I to not have a close relationship. All I can do is pray he coming to a realization and also for the Lord to give me the courage to speak to him. I want to have Esthers courage and be able to speak without fearing what the consequences will be.
Both Esther and Joseph trusted God to use them for the purpose he intended them and I want that to be me, I want to learn how to put it all in the Lord and avoid trying to always be in control of situations that I can't clearly handle by myself. Doing this, writing down what I feel has been very therapeutic. I guess the whole purpose of a reflection is so that we can dig deeper into ourselves and I have. All In all, these lessons are very helpful and give me a deeper understanding of what it means to be human, a good human. I do not ever want to be on the receiving end of a punishment but to be rewarded for being a pure, kind, obedient person. However I need to remind myself that if I make a mistake once, I shouldn't give up but continue with my path and correct that mistake. Mistakes are part of being human and I should realize every else is trying to figure this things called life. By doing so, my biggest problem being my inability not control my temper will be a thing of the past. I need to practice every I have read and promised myself to carry out.
I can not stress how helpful this exercise has been for someone like me who is trying to work in herself, for someone who does not know what being a good Christian is. The bible readings have done so much for me in a few days what I have been searching for for a very long time and because of this I now know who I want to be and not want to be because of the good examples like Esther and Joseph and the bad ones like Haman and Joseph’s brothers.

Proverbs

...Many of the eternal truths in the Bible have to be carefully mined up, like precious gems and stones deep underground. The book of Proverbs, however, is like a mountain stream littered with nuggets, just waiting to be grabbed. And many of these nuggets are wisdom. The book of proverbs consistently presents the sluggard as a folly and the diligent person as wise. In following the lifestyle of a diligent wise man or one of a lazy fool is presented throughout the readings of Proverbs. “All wisdom, even things related to everyday practical matters, begins with the fear of the Lord (1:7). Therefore, Hebrew wisdom literature taught people not only how to make good choices in life but also how to make godly choices.”(The essence of the Old Testament) Solomon, wrote most of the Proverbs, is well known for the wisdom gifted him by God upon requesting it. According to the Bible Solomon’s wisdom was divinely granted and surpassed that of all other sages (1kgs 4:29-34). Even Jesus accepted the historicity of the biblical account of Solomon’s wisdom (matt12:41), and thus, there is little reason from scripture to question Solomon as the author/originator of the proverbs attributed to him.( The essence of the Old Testament). The contrast between wisdom and folly is often a Sharp contrast between righteousness and wickedness for example; the diligent person is wise while the sluggard is a fool or the one who holds his tongue is wise while the fool hastens to speak. (The essence of the Old...

Proverbs 31 Woman

...Proverbs 31: The Assumptions and What We Should Learn From Her A normal assumption of the Proverbs 31 woman is a woman who is perfect. A woman who has her whole life put together, is simply astonishing in every way, and is surprisingly a woman that many Christian women dread to read about. What makes this woman so significant is not that she knows how to cook, clean, care for her children, and work hard, it is her wisdom that shines through and her fear of the Lord that makes her a woman of virtue. Other people have speculations of the Proverbs 31 woman; being too feministic, figuratively speaking on what a woman should and should not be, and trying to create a cookie cutter woman that is seen as perfect. Proverbs 31 is a great chapter, yet why do so many hate on it? Most people know about the Proverbs 31 woman, but most people actually don’t know the real story of the man behind this. The content of this chapter was written by a mother to her son, King Lamuel, who most people believe to be King Samuel. So if it was King Samuel than that means that the mother was Bathsheba, also the wife of King David. Proverbs 31 was actually meant for men, not necessarily women. It’s the man’s responsibility to find this woman who is rare to find because she is a jewel among many stones that symbolize the worldly women. Proverbs 31 was meant to be memorized for Jewish men. Yet many Christian women seem to cringe when reading Proverbs 31 because of the feeling of inadequacy. Some even speculate...

Animal Imagery In The Book Of Proverbs

...The book of Proverbs is jam-packed with numerous lessons that are all combined in a way that allows the reader to jump around from passage to passage to pick up different messages. There are countless passages that use animal imagery to teach character. These passages use a lot of comparisons to demonstrate what it means to have noble character. Proverbs 11:22 is a passage that demonstrates both animal imagery, as well as comparison. This passage addresses what it means to honor who you are. It uses the comparison of women who are without discretion are like a pig with a gold ring. This verse demonstrates that God made us in His image and we should honor our body and make choices in our lives that bring Him glory. If we are without discretion,...

Proverbs 12:19-22

...PROVERBS 12:19-22 BY MAY 10, 2015 The book of Proverbs consists of many small bits and pieces of wisdom passed down from King Solomon to his people during his reign. Proverbs was written in a way that the interpretation for each little piece could be taken in a different way depending on the circumstances which has allowed these bits of wisdom to stand the test of time and still be viable today. The whole book doesn’t flow well together but should rather be read in small pieces at a time. Proverbs 12:16-22 don’t flow perfectly well together but are some of the verses I try to keep in mind throughout the day. Proverb 12:16-22 holds a main theme of dealing with the dishonest. It says: 16 The vexation of a fool is known at once, but the prudent ignores an insult. 17 Whoever speaks the truth gives honest evidence, but a false witness utters deceit. 18 There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing 19 Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment. 20 Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, but those who plan peace have joy. 21 No ill befalls the righteous, but the wicked are filled with trouble. 22 Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who act faithfully are his delight. The author of Proverbs was very good at using literary devices to make a mental picture for the reader. He uses terms such as “lips” instead of mouth to make his point clearer and more impactful. The rough...

The Difference Between Diligence and Laziness Is, as Well as Between Wisdom and Folly, and the Book of Proverbs

...Essay Question 3 In a human’s life, it takes a great amount of wisdom and diligence to become successful. Thus, those who are lazy and foolish will have little chance of climbing to the top. Subsequently, one cannot help but wonder what the difference between diligence and laziness is, as well as between wisdom and folly, and the book of Proverbs is one that offers explanations to such a question. First, it is important that people comprehend the difference between diligence and laziness as stated in Proverbs. While being diligent means being prepared, and on top of things, a lazy person is one who often put off work that can be done today until tomorrow. In Proverbs, these two characteristics are often mentioned. Proverbs 6:6-11 comments that: Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man (NIV). The book describes a lazy person as a “sluggard” who stays in one place. Moreover, a sluggard has to be made to get out of bed to be of any productivity. Unlike the ant that is productive and diligent, a sluggard will not gain anything. Next, the relationship between wisdom and folly must also be taken into account...

...Never Judge A Book By Its Cover - How People Communicate Through Their Clothes The famous saying "never judge a book by its cover" sounds all well and good, however it is human nature to judge people by their image and we do it without realising it. If you were to walk into a room of strangers, you would automatically presume certain aspects about a person's upbringing, occupation or character, just by their image. Before any words have been exchanged you will have already categorised them against your preconceptions and this will inevitably alter the way in which you behave towards them. Humans are the least biologically determined of all the species and therefore we have to be taught social skills, such as how to dress appropriately within our social groups. We learn and adopt the interests, values and beliefs of the social groups we are born into and therefore share the patterns of dress. Although verbal communication is the most obvious way of expressing ourselves it is not the only way and has been proven to be the least effective. Body language, gestures and our image are a far stronger form of communication and therefore the way in which we dress plays a very important part in expressing ourselves to others. Our clothes signify our social identity and help us to understand the roles of others, the groups they belong to, their status within a group and society as a whole. Everyone is born into and belongs to a group or groups, some through choice and some not. People who...

The Promise

...The poetry inheriting a long oral tradition has always interested me. I also have the curiosity to ask too much about proverbs and traditional words because it is not easy to understand them and they are highly regarded in my society. This African proverb "the promise is a debt" has made me a moon of his word, pious and honest. The promise is commonly defined as an act by which a person, the promisor undertakes to one or more beneficiaries to do something in the future. It is noted those there different kinds of promises: political, economic and social. Debt is moral duty towards someone. Whatever the promise given, a response will be expected by beneficiaries. They will always look towards a promising, these promises will always be considered as debt. A debt is moral duty toward someone. The promises that we take, make people happy and excited, but the question is if they will be respected. When you cannot fulfill the promises that we have made, we tend to find excuses to avoid feeling guilty. These excuses allow us to justify our failures and prevent us from dealing with the embarrassing reality. The promise is morally important in African society. If we do not respect our promise, people lose confidence in us. This promise can be upgraded or respected in some parts of the world. This proverb "a promise is a debt" is an African proverb particularly in the west. The West Africa is composed of eight different countries; these countries have almost the...

Pride Goes Before Fall

...Pride goes before a fall This proverb is coined from the well known story entitled, “The Hare and die Tortoise,” from Aesop’s fables. We all remember having read it during our kindergarten days. The hare always quick on his feet challenged a tortoise to a running race! The tortoise who knew that, being a slow animal he was no match for the hare. Yet he accepted the challenge. On the day of the race all the animals assembled at one place and die race commenced. Alas! Like a lightning the hare sprinted across and disappeared from sight. But poor tortoise walked slowly, as usual. The haughty hare, which had gone too far away, paused under a tree. He knew that it would take a long time for the tortoise to reach him. So he stretched and slept. How long he slept, he never knew. Meanwhile, the tortoise came there, saw the hare sleeping and went ahead quietly and reached die winning post, giving a crushing defeat to the hare! This was a lesson not only to die hare, but to everyone who feels too proud and underestimates the others. No matter whatever one’s capacity is, one should not feel proud of it. To cite another example, we have all seen the English movie, ‘Titanic.’ One of the main reasons that the ship sank was the overconfidence of the captain and the ship’s crew. They underestimated what harm an iceberg could do to such a mighty ship of theirs. Hence, the overconfidence broke the ship and sank it, drowning many hundreds of passengers. People say that even a watch that stopped...

How Does Jim Carry Influence Today's World?

The quote still applies today by the fact that some people can have a rough childhood but they could end up being some of the most successful people in the world. The Switch in Time Saves Nine

...The switch in time saves nine One of the proverbs I find most useful in life is the one of Thomas Fuller – a British writer: “A stitch in time saves nine”. It is a well known proverb. It is frequently used in conversation. It passes on from one hand to another like a current coin A stitch in time saves nine” is an idiom, which is a phrase whose symbolic or intended meaning is different from the literal meaning of the words themselves.  Literally, it means that a single stitch (to fix a tear in a garment) will avoid having to make many more (nine) to fix a larger tear that it might cause/( A cloth which is torn must be stitched at once for otherwise the torn portion would increase in size and many more stitches would be required.) Figuratively, a little work today (one stitch) can save a lot of work later on (the nine stitches). For example, fixing a tile on the roof can stop the wind and water from getting in and causing a lot of damage to ceilings and so on. Or putting a little oil in the car engine can avoid a ruined engine, a ruined trip and an expensive repair.  We must at all times be well prepared for all things. The truth of the proverb will become clear, if we consider a few examples from day to day life. It is early in life that many bad habit is acquired and if the evil habit is not checked then and there, it grows and gives rise to many other evil habits. If a growing child tells lies, he should be at once taken to task so that the habit doesn't take roots,...
