Week 1 Assignment
Details:
In chapter 1, your text describes what psychology is. Lecture 1 discusses four goals of psychology.
Write an essay of 350-500 words that addresses the following:
1. Describe how the current perspectives, as discussed in chapter 1 of the text, help accomplish each of the four goals of psychology.
2. What particular issues in psychology, as discussed in chapter 1, are of personal interest to you?
3. How will the study of psychology enhance your life and make you a better person?
4. Provide specific examples to support your position.
Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the GCU Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
This assignment uses a grading rubric. Instructors will be using the rubric to grade the assignment; therefore, students should review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the assignment criteria and expectations for successful completion of the assignment.
Week 2
DQ 1: In what ways can distorted perception affect your decisions? Give an example of a specific incident in which distorted perception affected events. How can you prevent distorted perceptions from occurring?
DQ 2: Select a sense organ, and trace a stimulus’s path from outside the body to the brain. What did you learn about the sensory organ you selected that you did not know before? Additionally, complete the “Try It” activity on page 87 of the text. Were you surprised by the results? Why or why not?
Week 2 Assignment
Details:
Write a journal entry of 250-500 words in which you reflect on the following:
1. Discuss the prevailing viewpoint(s) on altered states.
2. Compare the harmfulness of various methods for reaching an altered state of consciousness.
3. Evaluate the usefulness (purpose) of achieving altered states of consciousness.
While GCU style format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected.

Write an essay of 500-750 words on behavior modification in which you address the following behavioral issues:
1. State the behavior you wish to change and state the importance of changing this behavior.
2. State triggers of the behavior.
3. Identify reinforcement or punishment that can be used to change the behavior.
4. Identify a time frame.
5. List factors that are most effective when using punishment to change behaviors.
6. What are some alternatives to using punishment to change behavior?

Students must also deal with the pressure of making good grades in order to continue on in higher education. While trying to make good grades and balance work, it is not an uncommon thing for them to lose sleep. Insomnia has been known to lead to anxiety. Overall, the overwhelming pressure of adulthood, working to pay for school, maintaining good grades, and lack of sleep are enough to give any college student anxiety. Being an Adult We spend the first eighteen years of our lives being told what we can and cannot do. We have everything from what we eat, wear, study and even what we listen dictated and mapped out for us. Then all of a sudden we celebrate the magic birthday; the big one-eight.
