What are the causes of stress in Michael’s or Jennifer’s life? How is stress affecting Michael’s or Jennifer’s health? There are several key factors in Jennifer's life leading her to stress. Subconsciously she is still dealing with the loss of her baby, her mother, and the possibility of losing her father. Also her career is adding major stress to her life from her keeping everything together, and the long commutes to and from work. Also the fact that she is trying to please her husband, his parents, and her co-workers, it adds extra stress to her. Jennifer includes the comment that she does not feel like she is keeping up with housework. Her commute is lengthy and perhaps if Antonio could contribute to regular chores as well as meals this would alleviate some of her pressure to take care of housework. How are these stressors affecting Michael’s or Jennifer’s self-concept and self-esteem? Jennifer is torturing her body health wise, by trying to please everyone she is causing serious harm to herself. Not only is Jennifer causing harm to herself she is severely damaging how she feels about herself. By her falling behind, in her household duties, and making mistakes at work, she is eventually going to start doubting herself, which i believe will lead her to develop low self-esteem. This may in turn cause her to decide not to get pregnant again because her life is becoming unbalanced and she will begin to think she will not be a good mother. How might Michael’s or Jennifer’s situation illustrate adjustment? How might this situation become an opportunity for personal growth? Jennifer should take time for herself. If she just thinks about all the people that look up to her at work and focus on herself and not others she should feel less stressed. This may give Jennifer the opportunity to grow and feel better about herself and getting pregnant again. She needs to let go of the fact that she lost her baby and try her best to move on. Sometimes steeping back and starting fresh is the way to live a healthier life. What defensive coping methods are Michael or Jennifer using? What active coping methods might be healthier for Michael or Jennifer to use? Explain why you would recommend these methods. Jennifer is using the Psychological barrier coping method to deal with her pain. This is an emotional barrier that causes individuals to make excuses that makes themselves believe that are not stressed or in pain. The key to managing stress is to use this mental clarity to solve problems, rather than just distract yourself from problems. In other words, relaxation allows you to keep yourself mentally strong, physically and mentally healthy, and calm enough to deal with life's stresses. You are not really coping with stress if you simply distract yourself and do not deal with situations. If Jennifer faces her problems than she can develop a way to deal with her issues. Select one theory of personality and use this theory to tell Michael or Jennifer how this theory explains his or her situation I would say that the Sigmund Freud’s Theory of Personality would relate to Jennifer’s situation because her doctor can not find anything medically wrong with her that would cause her to have headaches and feel the way she does. Sigmund Freud believed these symptoms were psychological in nature, but that their causes must be buried in the recesses of the mind beyond the reach of ordinary conscious awareness. In what stage of development is Michael or Jennifer and what factors about this stage might be affecting his or her perspective of this situation? Jennifer is in the warning stage of her situation. She is experiencing discomfort and pain because her body is trying to tell her that something is wrong. Being that Jennifer is not realizing that her body is giving her warning signs she may not be able to address the situation right away. In this stage Jennifer isn’t really excepting the fact that she has a problem so pain and discomfort impair performance and coping ability. In what stage of development is Michael or Jennifer and what factors about this stage might be affecting his or her perspective of this situation? In Jennifer’s case her relationship with her husband, in-laws, and father could all be contributing factors to the problems experienced. On one hand she may feel the need to meet expectations of her in-laws to become a mother, on the other hand her husband may be expecting dinner on the table every night when he comes home. These may seem like occasional or daily hassles but compounded by her fathers fading health and how to best assist him in living they are much more complex. Jennifer does not want to let anyone down and may feel like she is when she is not doing it all.

...Final Project In Jennifer’s case there are several different factors that would be considered stressors in her life. Some of her daily hassles include her one-hour commute to and from work, housework that needs to be completed, a demanding work schedule, and her responsibilities to her employees. Her health is another daily stressor that she has to deal with since she feels as if she is sick, yet her doctor was unable to find anything wrong, and I am sure she is constantly worrying about her father and his wellbeing. This is a large amount for one person to handle even without mentioning that she is still in grieving concerning her mother and unborn child. Her husband’s parents seem like very loving individuals, but they are pressuring Jennifer into trying for another baby before she has properly grieved over her miscarriage and properly handled the situation with her father’s healthcare needs. All the major stressors aside, housework and her daily commute are just things that have to been complete. Jennifer’s health problems are obviously manifestations of her unresolved issues and the amount of stress that she is under; this is what is known as general adaption syndrome (GAS). Her headaches, backaches, and indigestion could be signs that she is currently in the alarm stage of GAS. This is how her body is dealing with the sudden changes in her life, and if she remains in a prolonged stressful state her body will begin to shutdown. It is a good sign that she is not experiences...

Sexual Response Cycle

...The Sexual Response Cycle PSY/210 November 5, 2011 The Sexual Response Cycle The sexual response cycle is used to describe the different phases both men and women experience when sexually aroused. The cycle refers to the “sequence of physical and emotional changes that occur as a person becomes sexually aroused and participates in sexually stimulating activities, including intercourse and masturbation.” WebMD (2005-2011). The cycle is broken down into four different phases. The excitement phase, the plateau phase, the orgasmic phase, and the resolution phase Nevid and Rathus (2005). Below, I will break each phase down and describe how they affect both men and women and the similarities they have. The Excitement Phase The first phase of the sexual response cycle is the excitement phase. In this first phase an engorgement of blood vessels, also called vasocongestion, begins after 3 to 8 seconds for men and 10 to 30 seconds for women after erotic physical or mental stimulation Nevid and Rathus (2005). This is the phase where the body prepares for sexual intercourse. The male testes rise and the skin on the scrotum thickens and tenses. The vasocongestion results in erection for males. The female also experiences vasocongestion by swelling in the clitoris, vaginal tissues, and areas around the vagina. This phase also makes the skin flush and rosy. It is more noticeable in females. Males and female both experience their nipples becoming erect and harden as well as a blood...

Sexual Response Cycle

...The Sexual Response Cycle PSY 210 August 6, 2012 The Sexual Response Cycle The sexual response cycle is a term referencing the changes that occur within the body as it is becoming aroused (Nevid & Rathus, 2010). This cycle, the sexual response cycle, consists of four phases. Phase one is excitement. Phase two is plateau. Phase three is orgasm. Phase four is resolution. Even though the changes that occur in men’s and women’s bodies differ in each phase, they do have some things in common. So that we may learn and better understand what makes us different and the same, we must first learn the components that make up the sexual response cycle. There are two components and they are vasocongestion and myotonia (Nevid & Rathus, 2010). Vasocongestion is the swelling of the breasts, the genitals, and even the earlobes (Nevid & Rathus, 2010). This event happens in both men and women. Myotonia is the tensing of the muscles, which causes spasms in many different areas including the hands, feet, face, and finally, the spasms in orgasms (Nevid & Rathus, 2010). In the next section we will go over the four phases of the sexual response cycle. Phase 1, excitement. This is the beginning phase and leads in or serves as a primer to the following three phases. It occurs in both men and women, and it’s when the genitals become ready for intercourse. When the man is aroused, his penis experiences a surge in blood flow and becomes erect, his scrotal skin thickens, and...

Psy 210 Case Study

...Case study By Kevin Whelan Axia College of University of Phoenix PSY 210 Dean Marzofka January 11, 2011 Final Project: Case Study What are the causes of stress in Michael’s or Jennifer’s life? How is stress affecting Michael’s or Jennifer’s health? I chose to analyze the second case study, Michael the airline pilot, as I am in the same line of work, (aviation), I hope to be able to relate to the subjects symptoms, behaviors and anxieties and be able to relate positive and practical analysis and possible recommendations for coping with the anxieties of life in the profession of aviation. The primary stressors in Michael’s life are most likely a combination of the following: Chest pain, divorce and all the legal technicalities like paper work and the emotional implications, the end of a long marriage and loss of a close friend due to the commitment termination, (his wife), the difficult custody battle for his two children, ages 10 and 12, a heavy work schedule that keeps him away from his family two weeks a month, work concerns of possible lay offs in the future, the burden of a new town house in uncertain financial times, and finally, (if that all isn’t enough for one to deal with), unknown physical medical condition as a result of the increasing regularity of the chest pains. How are these stressors affecting Michael’s or Jennifer’s self-concept and self-esteem? In Michael’s case, self esteem has not been directly reflected in the case study, for instance...

Psychology and Health Problems

...Psychology and Health Problems James Hasty Axia College of University of Phoenix PSY 210 Introduction to Psychology Alshondrea Denton March 22, 2009 There are many health problems that can be associated to an individual’s reaction to life changes and stressors that can be experienced every day or a little at a time. This paper will summarize the multifactorial model and describe how it relates to the diagnosis of illnesses and it will explain what role psychology has played in understanding and managing two health problems discussed in the text. My hope is that this paper will help reinforce the ways that we can overcome the stresses we experience every day and live a healthier lifestyle, so that we can give our children an example to follow in order to improve their quality of life. According to our text, the multifactorial model is the belief that health and illnesses are a function of multiple factors involving biology, psychological, and cultural domains, and their interactions (Nevid & Rathus, 2005). The way that the multifactorial model works is by identifying factors that can affect our health and susceptibility to illness so that we can, in turn, control them and prevent them from affecting us further. The multifactorial model breaks the factors into six different categories; these categories are biological, sociocultural, environmental, personality, behavior, and stressors. Biological factors are the most obvious causes of illness. Things such as a family...
