Assignment 2

For this assignment, I interviewed my mom, Victoria Money, who will be 68 years old this August 13th, has been and still is married to my father (for 44 years). She lives with him in the home they bought in the summer of 2001 in Beaverton, Oregon, where they moved to be closer to my sister, who was expecting her first child.

From December 1967 until she returned school in 1989, my mom was a stay-at-home mom to me and my younger brother and sister. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1964 with a bachelor's degree in economics and, for about a year before I was born, worked as an economic analyst for the Salt River Project, a water and electric utility in my hometown of Phoenix, Arizona. She returned to school in 1989 to pursue a teaching certificate and graduated in 1991 with master's degree in curriculum and instruction and an endorsement to teach English as a second language. Ironically, we both attended the University of Oregon in 1990 and 1991, when I was an undergraduate history major.

From 1990 until 2001, she taught English as a second language in the Springfield, Oregon school district, and from 2001 to 2006, held a similar position in the Hillsboro, Oregon, school district. Being an English as a second language instructor, she got to know several Hispanic students and their families, and experienced cultural differences among those students. For example, she was often given gifts and invited to interact with the students and their families socially on occasions such as a student's birthday. This contrasted with what is typical of American students and their families, where such interactions are rare. She also experienced the death of a former student due to gang violence.

My Mom retired from full-time teaching in 2006. She still substitute teaches on occasion, fills in during

Week 6 Psy 201 Library Article Summary

...Social Development in Adults – Library Article Summary PSY/201 – Foundations of Psychology October 16, 2011 Helen Tretiak-Carmichael Social Development in Adults – Summary of University Library Article The article chosen is entitled “Psychosocial Development From College Through Midlife: A 34-Year Sequential Study.” The article is relevant and creditable. The range of issues covered during the adult development phase of life and the additional study of Erikson’s theory the class has been studying over the last two weeks provides credence to the relevancy of the subject matter. This article would be an excellent reference for an assignment on the topic of Social Development of Adults. The study referenced in the article uses subjects found from the alumni of the University of Rochester in school from the 1960s through the 1980s whose contact information was obtained and solicited in a number of ways. The study spans a time of at least 35 years as well as a range of ages. The study focused on growth within “[t]he eight Eriksonian psychosocial issues” which it define as “…trust versus mistrust, autonomy versus shame and doubt, initiative versus guilt, industry versus inferiority, identity achievement versus identity diffusion, intimacy versus isolation, generativity versus stagnation, and ego integrity versus despair.” (Whitbourne, S., Sneed, J. R., & Sayer, A., (2009). The article provides psychological background on its subject material...

...ork2012 - 2013 Catalog A Message from the President “Sullivan University is truly a unique and student success focused institution.” I have shared that statement with numerous groups and it simply summarizes my basic philosophy of what Sullivan is all about. When I say that Sullivan is “student success focused,” I feel as President that I owe a definition of this statement to all who are considering Sullivan University. First, Sullivan is unique among institutions of higher education with its innovative, career-first curriculum. You can earn a career diploma or certificate in a year or less and then accept employment while still being able to complete your associate, bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree by attending during the day, evenings, weekends, or online. Business and industry do not expand or hire new employees only in May or June each year. Yet most institutions of higher education operate on a nine-month school year with almost everyone graduating in May. We remained focused on your success and education, and continue to offer our students the opportunity to begin classes or to graduate four times a year with our flexible, year-round full-time schedule of classes. If you really want to attend a school where your needs (your real needs) come first, consider Sullivan University. I believe we can help you exceed your expectations. Since words cannot fully describe the atmosphere at Sullivan University, please accept my personal invitation to visit and experience...

...THE B L A C K SWAN The HIGHLY I mpact IM of the PROBABLE Nassim Nicholas Taleb U.S.A. $26.95 Canada $34.95 is a highly improbable event with three principal characteristics: It is unpre dictable; it carries a massive impact; and, after the fact, we concoct an explanation that makes it appear less random, and more predictable, than it was. The astonishing success of Google was a black swan; so was 9 / 1 1 . For Nassim Nicholas Taleb, black swans underlie almost everything about our world, from the rise of religions to events in our own personal lives. A BLACK SWAN Why do we not acknowledge the phenomenon of black swans until after they occur? Part of the answer, according to Taleb, is that humans are hardwired to learn specifics when they should be focused on generalities. We concentrate on things we already know and time and time again fail to take into consideration what we don't know. We are, therefore, unable to truly estimate oppor tunities, too vulnerable to the impulse to simplify, narrate, and categorize, and not open enough to rewarding those who can imagine the "impossible." For years, Taleb has studied how we fool our selves into thinking we know more than we actually do. We restrict our thinking to the irrelevant and inconsequential, while large events continue to surprise us and shape our world. Now, in this reve latory book, Taleb explains everything we know about what we don't know. He offers...
