Personal Application Emotional Intelligence
Why I want to increase my EQ
I would like to develop the ability to recognize my emotions. I need to understand my emotions, and realize how they affect others. I work with a person whom I believe has a high emotional intelligence. I admire his calm, logical approach, when others panic or become obviously upset regarding a situation. When he remains calm and logical situations organically diffuse. I trust him to react appropriately to given situations and seek his advice. I imagine him having a highly productive team, and an innovative work culture. On the contrary, I work with another person, she remains highly charged emotionally. She flies off the handle and overreacts. She raises her voice, uses profanity, and calls attention to herself. I avoid having to communicate with her. She has created a culture of fear and inhibits innovation. Having the two models of behavior, I choose to emulate the first. …show more content…
Per the text book Psychology for Living: Adjustment, Growth, and Behavior “Emotional intelligence (EI) the ability to regulate one’s own emotions and to be empathic for others’ emotions” (P 144). It has been said that emotional intelligence is more important and a more accurate predictor of success than IQ. According to Cherniss “people who were best at identifying others’ emotions were more successful in their work as well as in their social lives.”
I cannot prevent feeling the emotions, nor would I want to. The goal is to recognize them and, learn to control my reaction to them and remain rational. I intend to use my emotions to motivate others. I can detect when a coworker is feeling frustrated or overwhelmed. I am inclined to understand how they feel. In turn using that understanding to assist and ally the
