Reason: It’s important to know what stage of writing development a student is in so that their work can be assessed accordingly. Each stage is important and needs to be nourished.

Reason: This is important because it indicates that by improving skills in writing, you improve skills in reading, and vice versa. Teachers can use this information to help students make connections between reading and writing, which will help students be more successful in literacy.
Question 1: If this relationship is so strong, how is it that there are students who become fluent readers without being good spellers?
