Purrfect Pets: Marketing Plan
Executive Summary Purrfect Pets is a small independently owned company established in March, 2004. There are twenty five full time employees. The store sells distinctive pet supplies and unique apparel for pampered pets. The store brand ranks high in the southeastern region of the United States. Purrfect Pets plans to launch a new organic gourmet pet food. Four employees will be working on this marketing plan. During the economic recession pet parents reduced their personal discretionary spending before spending less on their pets. The emerging trends of pet parents has commanded high demand for premium pet food and services (Brennan, 2014). Purrect Pets is a leading specialty store that caters to the consumers who considers their pet to be a family member. The new pet food is made for the consumer who believes their family member deserves the best. The apparel and spa line is already well established. Purrfect Pets’ products are unique and high end. Catering mainly to dogs and cats; Purrfect Pets offers products such as designer day and party wear, jewelry and accessories, furniture, bowls, toys, and drinks. Prices range from nearly eighty dollars for plush dog beds in a range of colors and fabrics, to fifteen dollars for cat wipes. Popular products include sparkling mineral water bottled in handmade crystal containers and porcelain feeding bowls (Askin, 2009). Revenue from pet care is expected to increase at an average rate of 3.2% in the next five years. The positive spending trends along with rising sales will continue to increase profit margins. For the next five years the industry is expected to remain strong (Brennan, 2014). As a small company Purrfect Pets is faced with strong competition from large retailers such as PetSmart and Petco. Purrfect Pets will focus on capturing the marketing sector in the United States southeastern region. The organic gourmet pet food will be branded as unique, healthy, and desirable (Brennan, 2014).
Environmental Analysis Competitive Forces The pet industry is highly fragmented. PetSmart and Petco, the largest specialty retailers in the United States control approximately twenty percent of the market (Storm, 2011). Grocery stores and big chain department stores are starting to add pet sections and entire aisles in their stores. Large mass market companies such as Proctor & Gamble which bought Natura Pet Products are making inroads into the natural and organic pet food market. However, there is a migration back to pet specialty manufacturers who produce natural and organic products (Blank, 2007). Economic Forces The United States pet industry is considered to be one of the largest in the world. The industry has been growing at a strong pace. Sixty eight percent of American households own a pet, which is equivalent to more than eighty- two million households. According to the industry estimates, pet spending in America increased to exceed fifty-five billion dollars in 2013. The pet industry expenditure in the United States is forecasted to increase above five percent in 2014. As the United States economy moves into faster recovery, demand for pet services and products is expected to increase (PetSmart Inc., 2014). Political Forces In response to the massive pet food recalls, federal authorizes are proposing new standards for companies that manufacture pet foods. Congress suggested new and stricter processes for inspections. The Current Good Manufacturing Practices rule would apply to domestic and imported pet food, animal feed, raw materials, and ingredients. Factories making animal food need to have written plans to identify hazards and determine what steps will be used to minimize those hazards. The rule will cost manufacturers an estimated $128.75 million per year (Bachman, 2013). Legal and Regulatory Forces The food industry in the United States is regulated by the United States Food and Drug Administration. The Food and Drug Administration’s regulation of pet food is similar to laws regulating other animal foods. The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act requires that pet food be safe to eat, produced under sanitary conditions, contain no harmful substances, and be truthfully labeled (Pet Care Industry, 2012). Technological Forces There are a number of technical trends impacting the pet food industry. Advances in extrusion, drying and cooling technology promises to streamline the production of dry pet food and treats while saving money energy and time. The auto cleaning blender was developed to facilitate the increasing demand for quick dog food recipe changes. The blender eliminates cross contamination and provides a safer working environment. Product tracking enables the activation of energy saving modes, temperature or moisture control and aids in product change-over. The ultimate goal is to help manufacturers meet requirements while reducing production cost and increasing flexibility (Taylor, 2010). Sociocultural Forces One advantage for Purrfect Pets is the commitment to provide healthy organic pet food options. The growing humanization of pets created expansion in the market for pet food and pet care products. In health terms pets are suffering from similar health complaints as their owners. Consumers are buying more specialty pet food to help combat obesity and aging (Bainbridge, 2008). There is a trend toward “humanization” with a growing interest in fresher more authentic human type foods. Pet owners believe that pets are part of the family and should be cared for as family members. These values and beliefs make the pet care industry a very lucrative business (Leathers, 2009). Target Markets The largest market for Purrfect Pets includes consumers between the ages of forty –five to fifty-four years old, who account for approximately 28% of total revenue. Many members in this age group look for pet companions to fill the empty space in their households after their children leave home. A large proportion of this segment is viewed as pet enthusiasts, who consider pets to be family members (Brenna, 2014). The second largest target market is consumers between the ages of thirty-five to forty-four years old. Consumers in the market have children. They often consider the health and behavioral benefits a pet can have on their children. About thirty-eight percent of households with children own at least one pet (Brennan, 2014). Branding Strategy Brand has many implications in the pet food industry. There is an emotional connection between consumers and their pets. Branding is the perception pet owners bring to the purchases. The customer owned brand should reflect how consumers feel about their pets (Dougherty, 2014). Purrfect Pets is a well know business in the southeastern region. The new pet food will be an extension of the company. Another extension in the future may be baked goods for pets. The pet food will be named Purrect Pets Healthy Cuisine. Branding requires a company to locate itself in the proper category. This is easy for Purrect Pets because there is already a well-established category. Branding is an activity that requires differentiation of the product from the rest of the products in that category (Jones & Bonevac, 2013). Purrfect Pets Healthy Cuisine is different because it offers a healthy gourmet alternative for pet families. The pet food line will offer a luxurious and tasteful option that other large retailers are unable to duplicate. Branding is more than a logo or catchy slogan. In the world of visual statements a simple logo with a distinct color is best to gain a consumer’s attention. Consistent image and a simple message is important (Reep, 2013). Purrfect Pets’ slogan is “Our family cares about your pet family”. The slogan is constructed to connect with pet owners. The goal is to ensure that pet owners know that Purrfect Pet is a family that cares about their family member. Below is an example of the company’s logo:

The company’s Facebook page will be updated to advertise the new pet food line. In the future Purrfect Pet will advertise on local television stations. The store plans to collaborate with local groomers and veterinarians to offer samples and coupons. The store will establish a pet birthday club with a coupon and invitation to visit Purrfect Pets for a special treat. Positioning Statement With large national pet store retailers offering a variety of numerous products it is imperative that Purrfect Pets offer products with a distinctive flair. Many pet store chains are now offering organic and premium pet food at lower prices. While these stores sell major brands in mass production, Purrfect Pets produces all treats, snacks, and foods locally. The new pet food line will be manufactured locally and shipped several vendors in the southeastern region of the United States. Customer Behavior Pet owners fall into three categories: families with children, single households and empty nesters. As people marry later or get divorced, more single households arise. Pets are viewed as valued companions. For baby boomers, pets fill the emotional void of children leaving home. Pet owners treat their pets like substitute children. This results in increased spending on pet products and services (Berger & Topol, 2007). Because pets considered are valued family members, consumers want to provide the best products and food. Some consumers believe that luxury and premium means higher quality and they are willing to pay higher for premium. Pet lovers believe their pets are unique and deserve unique pet products. Consumers are also willing to pay premium prices for safe products. A few years ago tainted pet food caused massive pet deaths that led to companies recalling very popular pet food brands. Some consumers sued the pet food companies for the loss of their pets. Conclusion Purrfect Pets is situated to remain a lucrative business for many years. Pet ownership provides emotional and physical benefits. Studies show that individuals consider pets to be a very important member of their families. Pets are not merely animals, they are family. This company was formed to give all pet families luxurious products and an assurance of quality. The new pet food line promises to offer the same type of unique experience. No pet will leave their bowl unhappy.

Decision Making Process

...Decision Making Process The decision making process for a manager can be quite difficult. There are many times throughout a manager’s career where vital decisions must be made, and a solid plan of action is necessary to carry out the objectives those decisions have set in motion. The example which I have chosen to share involves important decisions made for the business that I own and operate with my wife. The business that my wife and I own provided products and services for pets and their owners. When we first started our business we had a diverse line of hand-made pet products from dog and cat treats, custom pet beds, pet toys, and other pet products. The services that we offered ranged from all levels of dog training to pet sitting, etc. The division of responsibility set my wife as the sole service and product provider while I was responsible for all accounting, marketing, advertising, and production assistance. After the first year of conducting business, the service side of the business was steady during certain parts of the year, and we were beginning to see more interest in our product line. Although we were seeing growth, the problems of time management, and production costs became more apparent. Many products of ours were very time consuming and the raw materials needed were expensive. The services provided gave us revenue with low cost for materials, but the service demand was inconsistent and managing production became difficult. At this point I began questioning...

Blog

...You should invest in my company, “Shady Dogs”, because our pets deserve the same protection that we would provide our children or ourselves.  During those rainy days, it’s more difficult to take our pets on a walk because they always return home wet, and the smell of “wet dog” plus the mess that ensues creates more work for us in our already busy lives.  Instead of bringing home your cold, wet dog, you can now buy them the protection they’ve been waiting for.  With the simple design of a walking harness that many of us are already accustomed to, my product has the added benefit of an attached umbrella to shade and protect our four legged friends from harsh environmental elements.  This patent pending design allows even weight distribution so that the umbrella harness can be comfortably worn on the animal's back. You can even use our device during the hot summer months to shield from the damaging effects of the sun’s harmful rays.  Of course, we offer these umbrella harnesses in different sizes and colors because no dog is too big or too small to be left out in the rain.  They range from $20-$35 depending on the size of the dog and are available in all major retail pet stores.  The cost to produce each harness ranges from $4-$6 so there is plenty of room for profit.  We have already sold 100,000 units this year and project 250,000 in the upcoming year.  We are also developing additional products to grow our business and are looking for investors to aid in production and development...

One of the most fascinating parts of this career for me is interactions with our pet owners, hearing their stories, helping make their pet’s life better and also bonding with their pets. We hear story after story of our itchy, scratchy friends and all we want to do is be there to help you out. We bond with not only your pets but with you. I personally enjoy educating our pet owners and taking the time to help them through very frustrating times. Did you know there is a veterinary technician stationed everyday just to take your questions, get your refills or call them into a pharmacy even if your local office is closed. The Gilbert Arizona office is where your calls are forwarded if your local office is closed so that a technician can help you 6 days a week. Loyalty

...Loyalty is a noble quality that is found not only in human beings, but also in pet animals, such as dogs, horses or elephants. The word 'loyalty' means 'fidelity to law' which is generally applicable in the case of the Sovereign of the State. But in its broader sense, it means one's steadfastness in allegiance to a person or cause, or to one's country or sovereign. Loyalty involves obedience, sacrifice and compassion of the heart. Loyalty is a very broad term which may be applicable in case of one's family, locality or the country. A loyal person is ready to sacrifice even his own life for the sake of his master, friend, relative or the country. A loyal person bears a moral character, honest outlook, and disciplined manners. A truly loyal man cannot be bribed or tempted to deviate from his own path. He is like a stone pillar which is firm and strong to stand any force that may try to penetrate through it. He is absolutely dependable in all circumstances of life. In this world, there are only a few instances of loyal personalities, who are well-known. In those days, some of the kings and emperors were lucky to have certain loyal commanders who fought for their kingdom and saved their masters again and again from the hands of the enemies, even at the cost of their own lives. Loyalty is common among the courageous soldiers and servants. There are also instances of pet animals, such as dogs, horses or elephants, who, out of loyalty, gave their lives for the interest...

Man’s Best Friend

...Dogs are much better friends to the average person than cats could ever be. Cats and dogs both make a good pets depending on the individuals life style. The dog is a lot more social with their owner than a cat is with their owner. Dogs love to please their owner in all kinds of ways, and cats just wants to be pleased by their owner. Dogs can be train much faster and easier than a cat could be trained. Many people have a pet at home. The typical house pet is ether a cat or a dog, and some times people have both cats and dogs. I believe that a cat is a better choose if a person lives in an apartment because cats get patty train much faster, as wall as they don’t need that much space. I also believe that the dogs are more suited for a person that has a house because most dogs need to get out and exercise and play. If a person is looking for there first pet they need to consider their living situation, before choosing between a cat and a dog. Dogs are much more social with people than cats are. Dogs either want to be petted or play with you, such as playing fetch or tug-a-war. If dogs aren’t playing with you they are most likely laying close by if not even in your lad, depending on the size of the dog. On the other hand cats are most likely in the other room sleeping because they typical want to be left alone or get upset by load noises, and people that they don’t know. ...through training. The training the dogs are put through to become fighting dogs is harsh, and reaches the point of cruelty. Owners put dogs on steroids, by the time the dogs are ready to fight they are very unhealthy and malnourished. This new hobby is animal cruelty, and it is ethically wrong. Ethical issues are abundant in the United States; future generations, along with our present generation, will not understand how society allowed this abuse to occur. Animals were created for the protection and survival of humans; they provide food and a defense against harm towards humans. Over centuries individuals have brought animals into our homes and trained them to live as pets. Today, most owners treat their pets as if they were a human being, or a child of their own. Animals today, for the majority, are seen as pets; it is hard to understand why anyone in this society would harm animals in any way. Animal abuse should be treated as a criminal act; cruelty towards animals should not be tolerated in this century or any future date. The occurrence of these events is largely unfair to these dogs that have no say or control in what purpose their owners use them for. Even though...

Dogs make good companions because of the friendship, unconditional love, loyalty and protection they give. I have decided to adopt a dog from one of my local rescue centers because there are so many unwanted dogs that deserve a loving home. Companionship is the number one reason I chose to adopt a dog. For instance, when you wake up in the morning they don't care if you have morning breath and no make-up, they will be there to greet you good morning. Also, you know when you come home everyday your dog will always be happy to see you. After a long stressful day they will meet you at the door tail wagging ready to give you hugs and kisses because you're home. It makes all your stress and worries go right out the door. Whether you need someone to cuddle with in bed or company on the couch watching a movie, your dog will always be there for you. The loyalty of dogs is quite amazing and they always want to be by you side. In fact, just walking from room to room in your home you'll be followed. ...Rough Draft Dogs are better equipped in the household families of today, Basenji’s and Rat Terriers are the two best pets that one can own. Most people have a hard time choosing what they think is the best pet for them. Most people want an animal that has some energy but not too much! They also want a dog that can be gentle with them and their children, but can also be protective and a guard dog when the time calls for it. Some people think that size matters when you want these qualities in a pet, but they really don’t! People of today have just been deceived into thinking that way. Basenjis and Rat Terriers carry these qualities without being too big to be uncomfortable or to small that they can’t do their jobs. Basenjis and Rat Terriers are both protective of their owners and are very loyal to them. Families want to have security with their dogs; they don’t want them to be TOO friendly to just anyone but they don’t want them to be too aggressive either. Both animals are very cautious about strangers and though they might not necessarily bite them they will make sure that they are noticed by the intruders. They will make sure that they are in between the strangers and their owners in case they need their assistance. Basenjis and Rat Terriers are very watchful and if they see or hear anything they automatically alert their owners that something is not right. Even if it is something big like seeing someone outside or something small, like seeing another animal. Both Basenjis...

The second text is written by Victoria Stilwell who’s an animal-behaviour expert. She gives an outline on how you should act and deal with dogs. She says that it is important that you take your dog to dog training. She also says that it's very important that you chose your dog very carefully. She claims that it is the owner of the dogs’ responsibility if someone gets hurt and you may never leave kids alone with dogs. She uses the following example: “You would not leave your baby alone with a stranger - so why a dog?”(L.16). She does not believe the whole breed is the problem but only how the pets are raised. Why Dogs Make the Best Pets

...Dogs Make the Best Pets Dogs come in all shapes and sizes. From tea cup size to giant size, from long hair to short hair and even hairless. With all the different breeds of dogs there is a variety of behavior and personalities and a variety of looks. But with all this variety there is one thing that stays constant – the love and companionship a dog gives. Regardless of the type of dog you chose your little furry friend will become your best friend, your family and if you let them will become part of your heart. There is no other animal that would make a better pet than a dog, no other pet provides more unconditional love and affection, and provides more social interaction and companionship than a dog. A dog expresses love and affection in so many ways, from the affectionate licks on our face, the intimate wagging of their tails, to their hugs when you come home. I cannot think of another species in the universe other than a dog that is capable of expressing their unconditional love and unwavering loyalty. When you think of a pet the two obvious choices that come to mind are a dog or a cat. Some people may try to argue that a cat is a better pet, but a cat does not greet you at the door like a dog, nor is a cat as affectionate as a dog. A cat is more independent than a dog, they tend to come around when they need something where a dog actually identifies with their owners mood. My dog can actually sense my mood and react accordingly; when I am sick or sad my dogs lie...
