Pursue of My MBA Degree On December 17, 2008 I received a telephone call from a woman named Jessica Wolfsen, University of Phoenix Alumni Liaison whom congratulated me on completion of my bachelor of science, accounting degree from the University of Phoenix I received in July of 2008. She wanted to know if I have registered on the Alumni Network website, which I had not. Then she asked if I had considered an advance degree. I told her I had concerned the idea but had not made a decision on returning to school. She informed that the University of Phoenix was offer a special in January for students returning to school and she would have an enrollment counselor give me a call to discuss the opportunity in more detail. Approximately an hour later Joseph Sorge, Senior Enrollment Counselor West Division, gave me a call. Joseph and I discussed where I am currently in my career and he subjected that receiving my master of business administration with a concentration in human resources would be a wise personal and professional decision. Therefore, I chose to apply for the master’s program to further my career and on December 19, 2008 I received a letter from the University of Phoenix stating that I had been admitted into the master’s program. This decision came with wanting to become more marketable to advance and improve my knowledge within the business administration and human resources industries. Obtaining my MBA will make me more marketable in the sense that it will set me apart from other individuals who will not have the expertise I will gain during my course study which can help to make me a leader in the field. It will allow me to more out of the payroll box I am currently in and into the human resources profession. I will be able to take my work experience in payroll, undergraduate knowledge in accounting and bridge it together in a new career in

...My decision to pursue an MBA degree to further my career - Week-2 MGT / 521 September 7, 2010 My decision to pursue an MBA degree to further my career - Week-2 The slow down of the US economy has caused companies to start to down sizing, reducing their workforce by layoffs or closing down completely. The Information Technology is being hit twice as hard by not only the reduction of local positions due to the economy slow down but in addition, the lower cost of outsourcing (Computerworld Staff, Feb 22, 2010) . During a recent reduction in force evaluation by my current employer, I noticed that the employee’s education level was an assessed value, which added to the valuable points for retaining an employee. I decided that continuing my education would be a very important addition to resume, future reduction in force evaluations to maintain my current career or make me more valuable if I was out looking for a job. Originally, I was interested in starting a Master of Science in Management (MSM) (Thomas Edison State College, 2010) to further advancement in my current career in Information Technology (IT) and potentially get into a IT Management position the program is offered strictly on-line. I have also started noticing a pattern of companies “outsourcing” information technology jobs to other countries for cost savings to the US companies and noticed the continued strong increase of revenue for the Outsourced Cognizant Technology Solutions (Ribeiro, Augu) . I decided...

The master’s program is challenging and will take time from an individual’s personal life. An MBA can further a career, begin a new career, or fulfill a personal goal. In contemplating whether to obtain an MBA degree, I had to decide what value this degree would afford me. In obtaining this degree, it would further my education and could definitely be an asset to any future career choice that I may undertake when I retire from State Farm Insurance in a couple of years. In constructing and supporting this argument on whether to pursue an MBA, as a choice, I used the Jungian Personality Self-Assessment to foster insight into possible career paths and how other individuals perceive me. The self-assessment of the Jungian personality gives an individual through 16 personality types a better understanding of him or herself. The assessment measures thinking styles of individuals, modes of dealing with information and interactions for potential managers in group settings. My personality type was the INFP result that describes individuals reserved, creative, and highly idealistic with a possible career as an architect, journalist, educational consultant, missionary, actor, artist, and poet. The decision to obtain an MBA requires a substantial commitment of money and time. However, there are many compelling reasons to pursue an MBA to get ahead in the business world. Below are some of the lines of reasoning that I want to mention: MBAs are internationally recognized Travel to many areas of the world, and most people have at least heard of the graduate degree known as the MBA. This makes it much more valuable than many other business degrees. For example, even though a Master's in Commerce may be a prestigious degree in some countries; other locations may not be familiar with the program. Having an MBA, which is recognized almost universally, will increase my ability to compete for jobs in more locations. MBAs can earn higher salaries One of the major reasons, as I have chosen to pursue an MBA is that it often allows graduates to earn a greater salary. Although the average starting salary for MBA graduates is influenced by the number of years of work experience they have prior to starting their degree, even those with fewer than three years of industry experience reportedly start out earning close to $70,000. This figure rises dramatically as graduates...

She would tell me, “Seles, this world is going to require that individuals who seek employment have a Master’s degree.” I began to think how my goal would be achieved and what university I attend. Why Choose an Mba

...MBA: My Bachelor’s Ain’t…enough! Management 521 MBA: My Bachelor’s Ain’t…enough! Pursuing an MBA is simply another way of saying, “My Bachelor’s degree just Ain’t enough!” Obtaining a Bachelor’s degree should be considered an amazing accomplishment. However, many have come to the realization that it is, in fact, inadequate. The status of the current economy is a leading indicator that something beyond a Bachelor’s degree is needed. A potential stepping stone beyond a Bachelor’s degree is an MBA, which opens up a great deal of opportunity compared to a Bachelor’s. Many reasons exist for an MBA to be sought out and why a bachelor’s just “Ain’t enough.” Some of the top reasons to pursue an MBA are that a Bachelor’s degree does not provide the potential to make enough money, give the education to be marketable enough, or give enough prestige to the degree holder. A study in the Journal of Marketing for Higher Education led by Lynn Dailey, MBA, PhD, marketing professor at Capital University, Columbus, OH, showed that career advancement, financial security, and elevated social status/prestige (see Table 1) are within the top 5 reasons to pursue an MBA (Dailey 148). Because of the current trend and these economical times, a Bachelor’s degree is just not enough. Pursuing and obtaining an MBA is an excellent way to make more money in the long run, to make one more marketable, and to give one more prestige than with a bachelor’s degree. One of the top reasons heard most for the...
