Pursuing My MBA

Pursuing My MBA

May 6, 2008

Introduction One of my many dreams has always been to completing my education. As a single parent raising two boys, and working fulltime, it was a dream of mine to earn a college degree. Finally, I had the courage to get my undergraduate degree at the age of 49 from Jacksonville University. I considered myself lucky because several professors truly made quite an impact in my life. They advised me to pursue the MBA after one year of rest, in order for me to get some of my personal affairs in order. My former professors perceive me to be an outgoing person with a vision and a low tolerance for incompetence. They often refer to me as a natural leader. Possible career as a manager, I did not want to risk having my plans ruined. I thought long and hard to analyze the time it would take me to complete the MBA and the time I had to give up to accomplish my dream. My decision to pursue an MBA degree was more on considering the benefits of an MBA degree and the opportune time to do it. I decided that it made more sense to wait a year rather than pursue immediately after earning my undergraduate degree. I knew that choosing to pursue an MBA would basically open up new career opportunities. Some of my concerns were getting back into studying and test-taking mode, which doesn't always come naturally after some time away from it. I’m fully aware that attending work and taking classes at the same time can be a heavy burden. Juggling these priorities will certainly require sacrifices in other phases of my life. However, I am strongly committing to my new career both at work and in class which will impress my employer and push me ahead of my competition. Also, I might find that working and going to school complement one another, as my work experiences add dimension to what I’m learning and my coursework gives me new approaches to implement on the job. I’ve gained work experience that helped me determine how I want to concentrate on my MBA courses. I’m considering eventually starting my own business, and teach me to advanced business skills focused on the challenges of starting a business. My work experience helped me determine whether I can reach my goals under my own power or if I will need the extra help of an MBA degree. For one thing, the MBA program is expensive, with tuition as high as tens of thousands of dollars per year. My employer offers education benefits, paying some or all of our employees' continuing education costs. I decline the offer because they have a clause in the employee policy handbook that states: if an employee quits, terminated or released due to company restructuring; then that employee will need to pay the full amount of the tuition reimbursement back with in fifteen day of leaving the company. I’m aware that an MBA degree covers many disciplines and will require many long hard hours of study. This is a hard enough challenge, especially with caring for my elderly mother and my current job obligations to maintain. Luckily having to work my studies around pre-scheduled classes, a requirement to attend at University of Phoenix, makes it easier for someone to pursue their education objectives.
I believe that obtaining an MBA will change my life for the better and put me on the right track to my dream career. In the past, existing obligations and commitments may have made getting an MBA seem like a dream. The other real value of returning to get my MBA, as a manager is that I’m introduced to a new collection of peers that usually becomes a critical part of my "network" for the future. Just as in Jacksonville University the additional exposure to the typical faculty members that teach in MBA programs represents another set of prospective mentors and networking opportunities. These faculty members are also usually involved in research and with organizations as consultants that could be another door opener for me. Finally, the courses in an MBA program and the deliverables require a level of analysis, research, and teamwork that can be an invaluable learning experience for me. The majority of MBA programs have a Capstone course that applies all of the course material that I would learn in the typical MBA. And to really top it off, there is also usually an Entrepreneurship elective where you can develop a business plan. I’ve had an idea for a business for quite awhile, which is another great opportunity to apply what I have learned during my MBA experience. I have also realized that once I have my MBA I need to do something with it other than have it framed and hung on the wall. Unfortunately, the achievement of getting my MBA does not automatically qualify me for an immediate promotion with my current employer. More than likely I will have to look elsewhere to capitalize on the value of my MBA degree.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Pursing an Mba

...Advantages and Disadvantages of Pursuing an MBA Advantages and Disadvantages of Pursing an MBA The decision to pursue a Master’s in Business Administration is a difficult, personal decision. In fact, I categorize it as a life changing decision. For instance, this decision is like most major decisions people make. Whether the decision is over buying a home, changing careers, starting a family or buying that dream car, it is usually laced with advantages and disadvantages, pros and cons, and benefits and consequences. Whether or not those advantages and disadvantages are tangible, quantifiable and measurable, most would agree that they exist and they sometimes have life changing affects. For example, some people think that it is a disadvantage to buy a home because it usually results in one securing a long-term loan whereby a monetary commitment is required from the borrower or homeowner. If this commitment is broken or one is unable to pay as agreed, the borrower or homeowner can lose valuable assets, seriously hinder their ability to borrow money in the future and be looked upon by the banking and financial community as a liability or risk. On the other hand, or some of the advantages of buying a home may result in credit worthiness, proves that you are trustworthy, disciplined and according to Weintrub (2010), “gives one a sense of pride in ownership, stability and security” (para. 2.). With the above mention in mind, I will explore my personal advantages and disadvantages...

...Decision to Pursue MBA Degree Dorothy Hall MGT/521-Management August 5, 2010 Professor John Quesnel Decision to Pursue MBA Degree Deciding to pursue a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) degree is an important decision that should not be taken lightly. The master’s program is challenging and will take time from an individual’s personal life. An MBA can further a career, begin a new career, or fulfill a personal goal. In contemplating whether to obtain an MBA degree, I had to decide what value this degree would afford me. In obtaining this degree, it would further my education and could definitely be an asset to any future career choice that I may undertake when I retire from State Farm Insurance in a couple of years. In constructing and supporting this argument on whether to pursue an MBA, as a choice, I used the Jungian Personality Self-Assessment to foster insight into possible career paths and how other individuals perceive me. The self-assessment of the Jungian personality gives an individual through 16 personality types a better understanding of him or herself. The assessment measures thinking styles of individuals, modes of dealing with information and interactions for potential managers in group settings. My personality type was the INFP result that describes individuals reserved, creative, and highly idealistic with a possible career as an architect, journalist, educational consultant, missionary, actor, artist, and poet. I agreed with some...

Mba Pursuit

...Pursuit of an MBA Marvin Conway MGT/521 1 April 2010 Construct and Support an Argument Decision to Pursue an MBA To some, pursuing higher education is a waste of money and time. Others, such as me, may argue that it is an accomplishment and the benefits from acquiring a degree are worth the efforts and hard work. With the current national unemployment rate at 9.7% (US Department of Labor, Feb 2010) and steadily rising, it seems improbable that finding that “ideal” job is likely. It is because of this situation that I have chosen to pursue a Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) degree with an emphasis in Accounting; receiving higher education could be the answer to my problem. According to the job outlook by education 2006-16 (Occupational Outlook Quarterly), increased earnings and lower rates of unemployment are trends associated with additional levels of education (Liming & Wolf, 2008). After taking the Jungian 16-Type Personality Self-Assessment test, scoring ISTJ, I found that my results support my decision to pursue my MBA with an emphasis in Accounting. A person scoring ISTJ are found to be organized, compulsive, private, trustworthy, and practical people. While it would make sense for an individual already working in the financial industry to undertake the MBA for a deeper understanding on relevant issues that she may come across at work, that is not the main reason why most are motivated to pursue an MBA. 33 percent of those surveyed in a recent poll conducted by JobsCentral of 181 individuals cited “Salary increment upon completion” as their motivation for pursuing an MBA, making it the number one reason. “Acquisition of knowledge and skills” was the second most popular reason with 21 percent picking it as their main motivation. Xinhui who is currently working in private banking agrees with the majority. She explains why she is toying with the idea of pursuing an MBA, “Besides having a better knowledge of business management, having an MBA will put me in a better position to ask for better pay,” “I had both personal and professional reasons for doing my MBA,” Debbie, who has just completed her MBA with graduate business school INSEAD, says. “Personally, it was the challenge to find the drive and enthusiasm needed to enhance my learning and to get involved in networking with like-minded professionals from all around the world. Construct and Support an Argument

...Construct and Support an Argument My decision to continue my education and pursue an MBA is to gain the required skills needed to start a new career in my near future. Pursuing an MBA will make it possible to live a better economic life and to have a good job with security and top pay. I have chosen this route even with the current economic situation, knowing that new jobs may not be available by the time I finish with my MBA. An MBA would benefit me greatly in a variety of ways. Pursuing an MBA will aid in the development of the skills I need in the finance and accounting areas. Of course the increase in pay from possessing an MBA does not hurt either. When researching jobs online I am finding that by having a master’s degree, the pay is substantially higher than those with a bachelor’s degree. Other than career and financial reasons, I do have a personal goal to achieve more than my siblings. Out of four sisters only two of us have a bachelor’s degree. I would love nothing more than to become the other sibling to obtain a masters degree. Plain and simple, I want to do better than all of my sisters. In this economy, having a good paying job with security is vital. “In nearly every sector of the globe, the prospect of making more money and living a better economic life draws thousands of students to MBA programs” (, 2009). I plan hopefully to open my own business someday in the very near future. With running my own business the part of running a business...

Obtaining an MBA will present new opportunities for me to figure out where I want to work and study. My success in life will be enhanced when I complete an MBA and pursue a new professional career path. As an undergraduate student, I majored in biochemistry. I believed having a scientific background would give me the skill set to lead me wherever I wanted to go in life. However, by the time I entered my junior year I was in serious doubt regarding my degree decision and my passion for biochemistry. After discussing my options with my parents, we came to an agreement that I would finish my degree because it would give me a solid foundation with a technical education. The biochemistry curriculum exposes participants to high levels of proficiency in math, logic, and problem solving. Additionally, the curriculum promotes the development to work independently and think creatively about potential solutions. I finished my degree but continued to feel very sceptical about pursuing higher education because I wanted to make sure I chose...

...Raising and Countering Objections Regarding the Decision to Get an MBA Shameka Decuir MGT/521 February 20, 2012 Dr. Douglas Gilbert, DBA, JD, MBA Raising and Countering Objections Regarding the Decision to Get an MBA The number four has many meanings. In East Asia the number four represents death. I agree with this superstition for a reason. It took me four years to decide if I should pursue an advance degree. I have finally put my fears to rest and have decided to embark on the journey of attaining my Masters of Business Administration with a concentration in Health Care by February 2014. This decision took me four years due to several pros and cons I weighed, uncertainty of what degree to pursue and my current career. There are several advantages and disadvantages that I weighed during my journey to decide on pursuing an advance degree. With completing my undergraduate program not only did I get a degree in Business Administration I also incurred a hefty amount of debt, $40,000 worth. According to an online article in 2011 the average cost for graduate school was $10,000 per year at a state college (Jo, 2011). These individuals often have to pay off their loans for between 10 to 25 years, depending on the amount they owe. People do not have many options for getting out of debt when they cannot pay their student loans, as private and federal loans are not subject to bankruptcy (Latzko, 2011). Along with this adding on to the debt this can also be time consuming...

The point that I am arguing is the reason why pursuing my MBA degree is important to me. My goal is important because no one in my family made a decision to go this far with their personal goals. My brother went to college, but he stopped at a BA in Economics, and he is now trying to go to law school to become a lawyer. Which makes the trek of obtaining my Master’s even more important to me. The recognition that I hope to receive when I complete this degree, is important to my personal goal. I want to show my children the importance of diligence and hard work. Diligence to me is the thoroughness that comes with completing your goal from start to finish and receiving that much needed appreciation for the sacrifices that you made while getting there. Pursuing my MBA to me is an accomplishment that I have wanted for quite sometime. One of the first things that I need my MBA for is to start a new career. My second reasoning for wanting my MBA is for the obvious reasons, like stature, better compensation and of course advancement in my future career. Stature in relation to a career is the ability to make lots of money, support my family and to just have enhanced opportunities within my chosen company. Why Choose an Mba

...MBA: My Bachelor’s Ain’t…enough! Management 521 MBA: My Bachelor’s Ain’t…enough! Pursuing an MBA is simply another way of saying, “My Bachelor’s degree just Ain’t enough!” Obtaining a Bachelor’s degree should be considered an amazing accomplishment. However, many have come to the realization that it is, in fact, inadequate. The status of the current economy is a leading indicator that something beyond a Bachelor’s degree is needed. A potential stepping stone beyond a Bachelor’s degree is an MBA, which opens up a great deal of opportunity compared to a Bachelor’s. Many reasons exist for an MBA to be sought out and why a bachelor’s just “Ain’t enough.” Some of the top reasons to pursue an MBA are that a Bachelor’s degree does not provide the potential to make enough money, give the education to be marketable enough, or give enough prestige to the degree holder. A study in the Journal of Marketing for Higher Education led by Lynn Dailey, MBA, PhD, marketing professor at Capital University, Columbus, OH, showed that career advancement, financial security, and elevated social status/prestige (see Table 1) are within the top 5 reasons to pursue an MBA (Dailey 148). Because of the current trend and these economical times, a Bachelor’s degree is just not enough. Pursuing and obtaining an MBA is an excellent way to make more money in the long run, to make one more marketable, and to give one more prestige than with a bachelor’s degree. One of the top reasons heard most for the...
