Parallels • Both cultures are rich and traditional, unified or nationalistic, and have similar religions, and values (Padmalingam, 2002). • Rapid urbanisation – the move from an agricultural based society to a manufacturing (and thus urbanised) society. • Democratisation – from a centralised government to capitalist, moving from an insular to outward looking culture. • Both Japan and China have imported their technology, relying upon imitating the inventions and ideas of others. This is changing however as modern quality management is embraced. • Preference for high growth over low growth. Chovanec (2011) says of Post-W2 Japan that “Inflation was low, and there were no external constraints”. Further, he states that Money Supply and Private Fixed Investment factors are paralleled between post WW2 Japan and China today. He infers that this “high growth has spending “out of control”. With such money to spend, quality systems are easily afforded. ...The United States and China have similar nurse education values and standards, which allow them to practice as professionals. There are three types of nursing education systems: Certificate, Associate, and Baccalaureate. The Chinese nursing technician is equivalent to the LPN in the U.S in that they must pass the State Nurse Registration Examination and are called Husi. Contrary to RN’s and BSN’s in the U.S., graduates of the Associate and Baccalaureate programs in China do not have to sit for state examination to obtain licensure. Regardless of the level of nursing all nurses play a significant role in healthcare in China. To enter the Chinese Nursing Technician program (Husi), one must have a junior high level of education. They then must complete a four- year program, which has a curriculum set by the Department of Health. After completing the program they can sit for the examination to obtain their certification. Students who pass said examination are qualified to work in the nursing field. This is considered the most basic level of nursing, however, the Husi’s dominate the hospital workforce population in China. The next level of education in China for nursing is the Associate Degree program. These graduates are called Hushi. This program is mostly inviting to graduates of High school or graduates of health schools. It is a three-year program delivered by technical colleges’ departments of nursing. While sociologists have been studying the effects of McDonaldization in U.S. society since 1993, few have studied how Chinese society has been influenced by this phenomenon. James Watson and his team studied the phenomenon in 1997 and their book, “Golden Arches East: McDonald’s in East Asia” is an excellent resource for anyone studying this topic, especially the first two chapters. During a lecture at Chongqing University, Professor Zhang Jin mentioned that the idea of Scientific Management was being explored in China during the early 20th century by such business leaders as Lu Zuofu with his experiment at Beibei. This “model society” was implementing the same values in the early 20th century that McDonald’s later touted in the U.S. fifty years later. The author suspected that they had a common ancestor in Taylorism, a business model developed in the U.S. around 1900. Further research found that indeed, they shared that common ideology.
