A high school teacher wrote a letter to local town newspaper criticizing the board of education management of funds between athletics and academics. The teacher was terminated and sued claiming his First Amendment rights were violated by the board. The Court found that public employees, such as teachers or firefighters are entitled to some First Amendment protections (In Pickering v. Board of Education (1968)).
