Quirky Chic

We’ve been enticed by the vintage craze.
Lucy Thomas seeks the exquisite allure of tartan.

If the carcases scattered through fashion history tell us anything, it’s that for every seasonal yin, there’s a yang nipping Jack Russell at its heels. Catwalk confidence has been mounting, and fashionable tweed collections are walking alongside the tartan ones. And so, for autumn, we have an arc of vintage styles, some enough to make even the most enthusiastic Hawaiian shirt or Warhol pop-art print look shy and retiring. I had the privilege this season of deciding which styles would be a total knock out and those of a fashion faux pas.

Besides tartan, I found the ultimate alternative look this season. Perching along fashion’s front row, peering among the silk dresses and the sinister furs, Vivienne Westwood struck me the most with her distinctive styles; some so distracting and embellished, they completed the entire show. The admirable retro appearance re-born back from the 80’s when the fashion influences were, Dynasty and Dallas, big hair, gold, glamour, glitz and shoulder pads. As the models strutted their way past the audience, I found the styles seemingly sensuous but in fact artfully constructed skirts and dresses that hung beautifully from the coat-hanger figures; Grecian dresses complimented smeared red lipstick with heavy black eye shadow, it felt like one had gone back to their teen days and stumbled upon a massive rave.

Deprived of the modern wardrobe staple - the elegant skirts, subtle shirts and slender sleeves that have become so worn out over the years - the revived ‘rock chick’ look is back where anything above the knee is pleasing and peachy keen. The ‘punk’ look, founded by the extraordinary lady I’m so familiar with, Vivienne Westwood has been boasting this new trend in Fall 2010 RTW. In essence, they’re delinquent, yet personality is enhanced through the patchwork materials and thoughtful design details.

Already, London, New York and Paris are striding out in tartan style. Durable, comfortable, flattering and functional, the kilts are everywhere. This season’s mini patchwork skirt at Jenni Kayne is nothing more than a confident whim, which considers exposing those legs eleven in a pair of sky scraper heals. This autumn exudes bravado and a sense of the carefree, and boy have we missed it. Subsequently, find sheer eccentric blazers at Alexander McQueen, in warm autumn colours which are flattering to most skin tones.

But, we mustn’t forget the reel eccentric and experienced designer, who has made a frequent collection for this ‘red label’. Vivienne Westwood, the queen of punk, mastered the tartan style. Back in the 80’s, she had the power to shock and rebel and use a little thing called talent, now this attitude is ruling the world of fashion. Vera Wang reinvented the silhouette with ruffle-trim skirts. So bewitching was this outfit, I must have circled it three times at the re-see in Paris. At Ferragamo, creative director Massimiliano Giornetti creates a style design with buttons and buckles fastening on the high waist, allowing the skirt to flow longingly below the knees. Another is edged with the tiniest mini skirt worthy of a Mary Quance design that breaks against those elegant and aristocratic ballroom dresses. The tartan style thrives in the RTW collection with Marc Jacobs, Paul Rand and Alexander McQueen all presenting their own unique versions. Not to mention the influences it’s had on the high-street by Topshop, Punky Fish, River Island and Urban Outfitters.

For Vivienne Westwood, tartan isn’t just a runway look, but a social expression of oneself and their surroundings which she successfully adapts season after season. She personifies the potent and subversive originality of fashion. Her tireless individualism and unique style has cemented her reputation as the UK’s most culturally significant fashion designer. Westwood’s signature is an ascent from teenage rebellion through luxury to global commercial success. Last season, a relatively sober tan trouser suit was worn with a splatter-paint top underneath, making sure the show was that little bit more colourful. This season, plain white cammy vest tops are worn beneath the tartan robes, focusing the attention on the antiquated material.
Westwood explains the ins and outs as if unraveling a murder case or a fashion suicide if you will. “I was still interested in the youth rebellion but never-the-less I stopped being a victim. Stopped trying to attack the establishment realizing that it takes too much of your energy,” she begins, settling down to the 69 year old woman she is not the 16 year old school girl. “My son has followed fashion since he was a punk. I was the first person to have a punk rock hairstyle, he and I agree that fashion is about sex,” like mother like son. She continues: “I based the look on rock ‘n’ roll right from the beginning. I think some people would love to make the clothes I make and of course, I do influence them, but they keep simplifying, and minimalism doesn’t quite work,” she certifies.
While fashion’s taste for tartan still holds strong, the question I keep hearing is how to compliment the trend. “To add more of an unruly look, I wear my tartan mini with chequered above the knee socks. It certainly turned heads at the Céline show from Paris Fashion Week and gave a quirky rebellious aura to the fashion crowds.” reveals chic New Yorker Savannah Miller, who is part of the team here at Vogue. “I also like to wear it with a tweed bowler hat, teamed with a thick chain necklace for a look equated to Annie Lennox on tour. Proud and confident, I strode out of the room with a sixty-something attitude, It’s as if your personality is speaking aloud.” I must express that stripes are most definitely not be affiliated with tartan. Stripes and cheques together follow a dismally, dumbfound dispatch in the world of fashion.

Another reason why tartan is such a rising defiance is that of their audacity. Rebecca Harding, the devoted stylish fashion wear expert agrees: “Tartan is such a daring trend in which only the bravest are able to pull off. I can remember way back in my teen years when my girls and I all wore tartan skirts of all colours. Whenever I wear anything tartan nowadays I’m reminded of my shameless boldness.” Her most recent collection is a baggy shirt by Vera Wang which can be most ideal for travelling. “I also like to wear loose shirts with leggings and ballet flats for a look like a transgressed performer on vacation. There’s nothing better to travel in.”

On a final note, fashion isn’t art and it isn’t conceptual music, obviously: it’s just the clothes on our back. But it’s those ways of thinking about tartan – Westwood’s way - that say something about the feeling we’ll be reaching for when we reach for a fire-red tartan skirt come summer.

Created in 1966 by famous couturier Yves Saint Laurent[->2],[1] the Le Smoking tuxedo[->3] suit for women was the first of its kind to earn attention in the fashion world and in popular culture. Fashion photography[->6] echoes the influence of this suit in shoots that feature androgynous[->7] models with slicked-back hair in a mannish three-piece suit, a style that was first popularised in photographs by Helmut Newton[->8].[1][2] Yves Saint-Laurent was seen by many as having empowered women by giving them the option wear clothes that were normally worn by men with influence and power.[2][But one day in 1966, the Algerian-born designer Yves Saint Laurent[->9] dropped le bomb with le smoking, a tuxedo suit of velvet or wool—black-tie menswear reinterpreted for the female form. Is Singapore a Sustainable City?

...Is Singapore a sustainable World City? SUSTAINABLE CITY - is a city designed with consideration of environmental impact, inhabited by people dedicated to minimization of required inputs of energy, water and food, and waste output of heat, air pollution - CO2, methane, and water pollution. It should meet the needs of the present without sacrificing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The critical tasks for the government then were to clear out the slums, provide public housing, and encourage economic growth by creating space for industries, and then to create a vision for our city’s urban landscape that would help Singapore in the long-term - The challenge is to keep pace with the changing...

...Bali & Java Resorts, Retreats and Pool Villas ElEgant REsoRts & Villas of Bali The island of the gods The island of Bali is among the most popular stops in Indonesia - the island’s people, culture, rhythmic dances, volcanoes, sculptured rice paddies, spectacular beaches, and beautiful scenery, combined with a stunning array of accommodations, make it a delectable place to visit. The Balinese dedicate themselves to a vibrant and elaborate set of beliefs and an intriguing culture. Scores of sacred holidays and festivals are celebrated each year with ritual and pageantry. Ubiquitous palmleaf offertory plates are replenished daily with flowers and fruit to honour the deities and placate evil spirits. Thousands of temples and altars dot the fertile landscape, rising from rice terraces and family compounds in rural hamlets that have remained mostly unchanged for a thousand years or more. Humble caretakers for the gods, the Balinese have also been blessed with the inherently unselfish gift of hospitality. So Bali is an obvious choice for the plethora of heavenly hideaways that the island has to offer. The name “Ubud” comes from a word that means “medicine” the area is well-known amongst locals for the medicinal plants which grow there and for Como to locate two well-being resorts there makes perfect sense. Technology

...oday's technology is already producing a marked shift in the way we think and behave, particularly among the young. I mustn't, however, be too censorious, because what I'm talking about is pleasure. For some, pleasure means wine, women and song; for others, more recently, sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll; and for millions today, endless hours at the computer console. But whatever your particular variety of pleasure (and energetic sport needs to be added to the list), it's long been accepted that 'pure' pleasure - that is to say, activity during which you truly "let yourself go" - was part of the diverse portfolio of normal human life. Until now, that is. Now, coinciding with the moment when technology and pharmaceutical companies are finding ever more ways to have a direct influence on the human brain, pleasure is becoming the sole be-all and end-all of many lives, especially among the young. We could be raising a hedonistic generation who live only in the thrill of the computer-generated moment, and are in distinct danger of detaching themselves from what the rest of us would consider the real world. This is a trend that worries me profoundly. For as any alcoholic or drug addict will tell you, nobody can be trapped in the moment of pleasure forever. Sooner or later, you have to come down. I'm certainly not saying all video games are addictive (as yet, there is not enough research to back that up), and I genuinely welcome the new generation of "brain-training" computer...

Consumer Behaviour

...1. Introduction We started our research with a definition of the term “consumer behaviour which, according to Schiffman, L. and Kanuk L. (2004 p. 8) is “the behavior that consumers display in searching for, purchasing, using, evaluating and disposing of products and services that they expect will satisfy their needs”. Considering that we are all unique persons with our own needs and requirements, one of the most important constants among all of us is that above all we are consumers. Until the late 20th century a lot of firms were product-orientated and failed to understand what is changed in their customers’ needs in an increasingly competitive marketplace. In today’s competitive market place there can be few organisations, which do not want to be customer-oriented. Proctor (2000) stated that “Nowadays, we understand that customers matter, as well as marketing is very important.” Also, Kotler and Keller (2011) highlight “the importance of understanding consumer buying behaviour and the ways how the customers choose their products and services can be extremely important for product makers as well as service providers as this gives them a competitive advantage over its competitors in several aspects. For example, they may use data obtained by studying the consumer buying behaviour to set their strategies towards offering the proper products and services to its core market of customers reflecting their needs and wants effectively.” To sum up all the arguments stated above...

...Fashioning an identity ‘In a lot of ways, branding is simply telling a story.’ Exploring the fashion world occasionally feels like gate-crashing an exclusive club. At least, that’s the sensation I experience as I climb a spiral staircase in a building near Place Vendôme – the grand Parisian square that is home to the Ritz. César Ritz opened his celebrated hotel on 1 June 1898, and its rich patrons attracted the attentions of Cartier, Boucheron, Van Cleef & Arpels, and the other jewellery and luxury goods boutiques that crowd the square. This particular building is the headquarters of a publishing firm, but its location is entirely appropriate. Over the past ten years, Assouline has published a series of glossy books, each minutely dissecting the history of a legendary designer label. With offices in Paris, London and New York, it has become a luxury brand in its own right. I reckon that here, at least, I should get my first insight into what makes a fashion icon. As so often on these occasions, the claustrophobic staircase and labyrinthine corridors of the old building lead to a large office, with a bright picture window overlooking the potted trees and shrubs in the courtyard. Martine Assouline, an elegant French woman, sits me down at a glossy slab-like table and considers her response to my question. ‘At the moment we are in a period where the brand has an exaggerated importance,’ she tells me. ‘Designers like Tom Ford, John Galliano and Marc Jacobs injected new...

A Tale of Two Londons

...A Tale of Two Londons Who really lives at One Hyde Park, called the world’s most expensive residential building? Its mostly absentee owners, hiding behind offshore corporations based in tax havens, provide a portrait of the new global super-wealthy. BY NICHOLAS SHAXSON Up until the 18th century, Knightsbridge, which borders genteel Kensington, was a lawless zone roamed by predatory monks and assorted cutthroats. It didn’t come of age until the Victorian building boom, which left a charming legacy of mostly large and beautiful Victorian houses, with their trademark white or cream paint, black iron railings, high ceilings, and short, elegant stone steps up to the front door. This will not be the impression a visitor now gets as he emerges from the Knightsbridge subway station’s south exit. He will be met by four hulking joined-up towers of glass, metal, and concrete, sandwiched between the Victorian splendors of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, to the east, and a pretty five-story residential block, to the west. This is One Hyde Park, which its developers insist is the world’s most exclusive address and the most expensive residential development ever built anywhere on earth. With apartments selling for up to $214 million, the building began to smash world per-square-foot price records when sales opened, in 2007. After quickly shrugging off the global financial crisis the complex has come to embody the central-London real-estate market, where, as high-end property consultant...
