I know zoos are no longer in people's good graces. Religion faces the same problem. Certain illusions about freedom plague them both. (1.4.14)

1. I chose this quotation because currently, the world has the problem where people are now pointing to a certain race or religion to target. In zoos, the animals are trapped in cages and if one is deemed as an aggressive animal, all animals within that species are deemed as aggressive and isolated from their natural habitats like humans within a certain religion are deemed as terrorists due to a certain few that calls themselves a representative of that religion allowing people to believe all humans of a certain religion are terrorists.

3.

I believe that currently where i am at in the novel, Pi Patel’s story is honest because his

thoughts are seemed as genuine. Maybe at a later point in the novel, his story will become coloured by hindsight or skewed by the narrator.

2.

Growing up in this century where the government is telling us that everyone is viewed as

an equal, but in reality we are not, has made me come to the realization that although some countries are talking about having lots of freedom, we are all isolated from the truth. I got to this point of awareness that no one will ever be viewed as an equal in the eyes of the law when people started getting stopped at airports due to their skin colour, and the culture origin of their clothes. I believe that religion has always been a problem with the society. I have seen so many muslim people getting called terrorists because of what they believe in, yet, I have not seen christians or catholics get called murderers. My journey as a person growing up and seeing all these people killed then and now, have made me come to terms that there will always be discrimination against certain religion and race, even though so many years have passed. The quote “I know zoos are no longer in people's good graces. Religion faces the same problem.
Certain illusions about freedom plague them both.” (1.4.14) goes to show that while zoos are supposed to help endangered species and orphans have a sustainable but controlled environment and show good faith in the humanity, it has now come to the point where animals are dying because they are being captured for the entertainment use. As well as religion, it is supposed to unite people together for something that they believe in and support one another, yet, they are viewed as aggressive, and overpowering for others to believe in the same religion.

Quotation Analysis

...Zoe Kerhoulas Ms. Zeldon ENG4UV July 8th, 2016 Quotation Analysis - Life of Pi Quotation Selected: “Things didn't turn out the way they were supposed to, but what can you do? You must take life the way it comes at you and make the best of it.” (Martel, 101) This quotation strongly reflects my beliefs and values. As it is bluntly proven to us, life isn’t fair. There have been and will be times where an unfair situation will have a negative impact on someone’s life, and these events are often unavoidable. I chose this quote because of a similar quote my dad used to constantly remind me of. “You must not worry about things you can’t control.” This quote is important because it is common for people to get hung up on past failures and disappointments, which can severely impact one’s future endeavours. The key to any measure of success in life is taking an appropriate amount of time to calm following an upsetting experience, then acquiring the strength to move on and focus on the challenges of the present day. Using this strategy will allow one to ‘look on the bright side’ as they move through life, and releasing the burdens of one’s past experiences. From Helplessness to Happiness Although our family was unaware at the time (as I was only 2 years old), on March 22nd of 2001, our lives were bound to change forever. Not just due to the birth of a beautiful baby boy whom was to be my brother, but because of the despairing diagnostic presented to us three years later. I was...

Hero Quotation Analysis

...Hero Quotation Analysis Pi Patel’s love for religion is strange but at the same time commendable. My personal views on religion are neutral in the sense that it doesn’t bother me as long as it’s not affecting me. Others can believe whatever it is that they need to believe, as long as they don’t harm anyone and are not forceful towards others with their beliefs. In the quote I chose from part one of Life of Pi, Pi talks about the lack of freedoms religion seems to have: “I know zoos are no longer in people's good graces. Religion faces the same problem. Certain illusions about freedom plague them both.” (Martel 14). I’ve always seen religion exactly like that, freedomless and restricting of its believers. I came to this by observing the difference between the people in my life who have a strong connection to go compared to those who don’t. At only a few months old I was baptised. My parents themselves are not very religious, both growing up in catholic families and going to catholic schools they chose to leave religion behind them with school. My grandparents on the other hand and devout Catholics, mother’s mother lives for the church, lives for God and lives for the Bible. Being baptised wasn’t something that bothered me until I became old enough to know what it meant. At church, I was accepted but I was unable to do the things everyone else around me was doing because I hadn’t had my first communion. That rule made me uncomfortable, it sparked my dislike for church. Over...

Hamlet Quotation Analysis

...“Oh, that this too, too sullied flesh would melt. Thaw, and resolve itself into a dew, Or that the Everlasting had not fix'd. His canon 'gainst self-slaughter! O God, God! How weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable. Seem to me all the uses of this world! Fie on't, ah fie! 'Tis an unweeded garden That grows to seed” (I,II, 129-136). Hamlet’s first soliloquy is given early in the first act of Shakespeare's play and sets the tone of the character. Hamlet speaks these words following the recent death of his father, the hasty remarriage of his uncle and mother, and an encounter with his parents regarding their wishes for him to remain in Denmark ceasing his studies elsewhere; not in favour of Hamlet himself. This is the first time the audience becomes aware of Hamlet’s suicidal ideation and depression. Living for Hamlet is a burden, he sees himself as damned, forced to live in this world unhappy due to his religious beliefs. The theme of death is apparent in this quote and utilizes mood and atmosphere to solidify the state of Hamlet’s mind. This is the initial thought of suicide for Hamlet, verbalizing his desire for his flesh to melt and anger that God deems “self-slaughter” a sin. This provides evidence that Hamlet has considered suicide before but felt trapped because of the religious consequences of it. He also goes on to say the world is a “weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable” place alluding to the thought that suicide appears to be the best alternative to this...

He watched television for half an hour, then he finally felt sleepy. 2. Plot summaries instead of analysis Although it is often necessary to recount some of the plot to make your point, your paper should not be solely a plot summary. I know what happens in the book, and I assume you do, too. After recounting the relevant part of the plot, make an analytical statement about that passage; show me you have thought about the book. --Incorrect Michiko placed the money she earned prostituting herself into the empty box which was meant for her husband’s ashes. She held the box tightly as a tear ran down her cheek. --Correct Michiko’s act of placing the money she earned prostituting herself in her late husband’s ash-box demonstrates how her recent corruption had replaced a previous life of happiness. 3. Quoting instead of paraphrasing As a rule, you should only quote when either the original author said what he/she said so well that you could simply not say it better OR you are quoting a passage from fiction to convey the tone of the story. Quotations should be introduced by you; do not insert someone else’s words in you essay as if they are merely a continuation of your own words. See the handout on Plagiarism for examples of correct paraphrasing. 4. Incomplete sentences Every complete thought needs a subject...

What Is Plagiarism?

...product of one’s own mind” (Black & Nolan, 1990, p. 1150). Stated another way, plagiarism is the pilfering of another’s hard work, while taking the credit for oneself. ‘The word ‘plagiarism’ comes from the Latin word plagiarius, which means ‘kidnapper.’ Writers commit plagiarism when they ‘kidnap’ someone else's work without acknowledging the source” (Hooker, 2006). First of all there are countless explanations for why a student may plagiarize, in some cases students are just plain lazy and don’t want to go through the creative process, exerting the meticulous hard work that good writing requires. There are students that suffer from poor time management skills failing to realize the amount of study and research required to deliver a genuine analysis. Likewise there are those that persist in poor note taking habits, leaving out important bits of information here and there causing confusion when it’s time to put it all together. Additionally there are students who are unaware of proper citation technique (What is Plagiarism?, n.d.). Meanwhile, plagiarism falls into one of two categories, one is intentional plagiarism, and the other is unintentional plagiarism. In the case of intentional plagiarism the writer or student knowingly uses the work of someone else, without citing the source or giving credit to the original author, to include internet paper mills, and commonly take place in the case of the lazy student or when the student has poor time management habits (College Board, 2012)...

...marking centre. Candidates’ responses should be considered on merit. Whenever appropriate, marks should be awarded on a holistic basis. 4. 5. Marking the comprehension:    Incorrect spelling in one-word answers should be marked wrong. Incorrect spelling and language errors in longer responses should not be penalised because the focus is on understanding. For open-ended questions, no marks should be awarded for YES/NO or I AGREE/I DISAGREE. The reason/ substantiation/motivation is what should be considered. For TRUE/FALSE or FACT/OPINION questions, the mark should be split, i.e. award 1 mark for TRUE/FALSE or FACT/OPINION and a mark for the reason/substantiation/ motivation/quotation. For questions which require quotations from the text, do not penalise candidates for omitting the quotation marks. When one-word answers are required and the candidate gives a whole sentence, mark correct provided that the correct word is underlined/highlighted. When two/three facts/points are required and a range is given, mark only the first two/three. If a candidate uses words from another language other than the one being examined, disregard those words, and if the answer still makes sense, do not penalise. However, if a word from another language is used in a text and required in an answer, this will be acceptable. Accept dialectal variations. For...

Another quote that appeals to us as a young audience is: ‘’It’s all one big endless loop. We lie the mirror and the mirror likes us. ...It’s very easy to find information for a research paper but it’s not in most cases simple to add information to your paper without falling a victim of plagiarism. The tests gives guidelines on how one can avoid plagiarism in while writing a research paper to ensure that it is free of plagiarism. From the quiz I undertook on plagiarism, pre-test score was low as compared to post-test score which was higher. Only four questions were answered correctly in the pre-test quiz. This was due to limited knowledge I had about detecting, preventing and dealing with plagiarism. In quiz one, I answered wrongly the second question because I dint know that question marks are used when you quote someone else work. The question marks are used to show that the work belongs to someone else and not my own writings. When quoting a source, it’s recommended to use the quote exactly the way it appears because no one would like to be misquoted. After learning this concept, I was now able to answer the question correctly in post-test quiz. Another challenging question was question was the 4th question. The question was testing on citation as a tool to avoid plagiarism. From the information given on citation, it’s highly recommended that any time you quote someone’s words whether printed, spoken or sung, it’s vital to cite them. Question 5 was still testing on citation and I dint answer it correctly. I got to learn that proverbs don’t need to be cited since they are common knowledge. Another question...
