Rainsford cursed the ground he was standing, he had chosen to do the right thing and paid the price. He imagined the faces of the people laughing as they streamed away, and kicked the sand. He stopped abruptly when his foot hit something in the sand. Rainsford yelped in pain. Kneeling to the ground, Rainsford stared in bewilderment at what his foot had hit, it was a mummified monkey’s paw, he reached towards it. As soon as his fingers touched the paw, an odd sense of foreboding passed through him. He pocketed the item, and out of frustration, trudged home.
Rainsford had always found himself more comfortable when not surrounded by people. Hunting had left him alone, as he worked his best like this. But this, this was different, nothing to do, nowhere to go, and no one he could talk to. He felt himself craving human company desperately. Out of his loneliness and despair, Rainsford had grown attached to the monkey’s paw, often finding himself caressing the thing when he felt lonely.
