Problem Faced

Rajeev Singh wants to decide whether he should invest more financial resources into his suffering business. He sees alternatives that could potentially turn the business around but is unsure at ultimately what he should do. Competition is becoming fierce in the furniture industry since there are few barriers to enter the market. Consumers will also shop around for the lowest price, since the price is more important than the brand recognition. When deciding what we thought Rajeev should do, we have determined alternatives that we feel would be the most successful for the business.
To determine each alternative, we came up with charts comparing each criteria for the major factors that we decided were most important for the success of Rajeev. By using the SWOT analysis we found the strengths to focus on and the weaknesses to be aware of. We then compiled charts to score each option.
Introduction
The furniture industry has been and continues to be very important industry in probably almost all countries in the world, which have or don't have large forest resources. Like other industries, the furniture industry “is rapidly growing while the market is becoming… fiercely competitive” more than ever. The competition is more intense in both locally as well as globally. Therefore, in order for a firm to continue operating in such fierce competitive environment, they must explicitly have their well-formulated business strategies that are very unique from their competitors. These strategies might perhaps include the unique branding,

...the system. The hospital administrators need to monitor the employee’s direct collation to the data they are inputting into the system is in fact correct. Possibly the lack of communication resulting from the hospital administrators is an acknowledgement that the employees know of the importance of the correct data input, when in fact they are not aware of the importance and how much the organization is reliant on the information for funding and reporting. One of the biggest issues facing employee and employer relationships is the lack of communication. According to Joseph (2013), “failure to communicate effectively often leads to conflict, which can harm an organization.” If the problem is not correct by the hospital administrators, Vijay Singh may need to go the individual hospitals and have meetings directly with the individuals inputting the information. This is a means of stressing the importance and also for him to know who exactly maybe causing this issue. The information I would have to need to analyze for the organization would be the reports themselves. What information specifically is being entered incorrectly? Possibly the issue is stemming from a computer glitch in the system. The system could be missing an area where it needs to be filled in or there is a need for an update to the system...

...New Delhi: After battling stiff opposition, government Friday allowed 51 percent foreign investment in multi-brand retail but left it to the states to permit global retailers open stores. It has also tweaked the sourcing norms for FDI exceeding 50 percent in single brand retail, requiring foreign firms, which want a relaxation of the 30 percent procurement norms, to set up manufacturing facilities in the country. After considering various aspects and discussions with various stakeholders and states, it has been decided to go ahead with the decision to allow 51 percent FDI in multi-brand retail, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma told reporters after the Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. "The response has been a mixed one but the UPA had tried to evolve a consensus," he said. The cabinet had in November last year approved 51 percent FDI in multi-brand retail but had to put it on hold due to opposition from political parties, including UPA ally Trinamool Congress. Sharma also reiterated that foreign retailers planning to enter the multi-brand segment would have to invest a minimum of USD 100 million with 50 percent of it in rural areas. As they both are rising as great powers, their mutual relationship will have a significant impact not only on Asia, but on the whole world. At present, the nature of their relationship is something mixed i.e., growing cooperation in the field of trade and commerce along with distrust and mutual suspicions in the strategic fields whether political or geographical. For these apparent factors, the future relationship between India and China can be characterised by the cooperation in those fields whether mutual, regional or international which may be beneficial for the peaceful rise of both these states and confrontation, competition, and even hostility in some other areas where the respective interests of both the giants clash with each other, for example, the border issue, relationship with other countries particularly US and Pakistan, their encirclement policies, competition for energy resources, nuclear arms race...

India’s 12th Five Year Plan

...India’s 12th Five Year Plan to Focus on ‘Inclusive Growth’ Apr. 25 – As India’s government prepares to submit its approach paper for its 12th five-year plan (a plan which covers years 2012 to 2017), the Planning Commission’s focus on instilling “inclusive growth” is making headway. The plan is expected to be one that encourages the development of India’s agriculture, education, health and social welfare through government spending. It is also expected to create employment through developing India’s manufacturing sector and move the nation higher up the value chain. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, however, warned that maintaining fiscal discipline is important as well. The commission will likely strive to enact policies that will achieve somewhere around a 10 percent growth rate in factories and a 4 percent growth rate in farm produce, though Prime Minister Singh has asked the plan to set the nation’s growth rate firmly at 9 percent to 9.5 percent. Come May, a view into the implementation of these goals should be apparent. A question that India’s government will have to grapple with, much like that of any emerging market, is whether to continue to focus on GDP growth in the face of soaring food prices and economy-wide inflation. An important aspect of generating “inclusive growth” is shifting the target of government aid to rural areas. Typically, large projects such as power generation, roads whereby freight can travel, and airports receive the lion’s share of government...

...In this quarter’s update, we have incorporated the latest subscriber data from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and Bangladeshi mobile operators, and made several adjustments to our forecast scenarios. We have also extended our forecast period to 2016. At the time of writing, the BTRC and several mobile operators have yet to release the latest subscriber data pertaining to the quarter ended September 2011. We estimate that there were about 86.555mn mobile subscribers in Bangladesh at the end of September 2011, representing a net addition of 4.728mn from the previous quarter. Grameenphone was the only operator to have announced its September 2011 results. The operator’s subscriber base increased to 35.245mn from 33.824mn in June 2011, while its blended ARPU fell to BDT257 from BDT270 over the same period. We believe that the Bangladeshi mobile industry is on track to meet our end-2011 target of 90.511mn. In our newly extended forecast, we expect 158.940mn subscribers in the country at the end of 2016, with a penetration rate of 99.2%. While we have largely retained our expectations for Bangladesh’s fixed-line industry, we have adjusted our forecasts for the country’s internet and broadband sectors in light of new data from the ITU. We forecast 9.718mn internet users and 4.729 broadband (fixed and mobile) subscribers in Bangladesh at the end of 2016. In the quarter ended September 2011, we saw...

India and Youngistan

...INDIA AND YOUNGISTAAN I remember I read an article somewhere named ‘Conversation With The Mahatma’. Although I can’t recall the name of the magazine or the writer, I clearly remember what it was all about. It had made quite an impact on me and I remember writing a speech based on that article for my school assembly. The article was rather a simple one conveying the message that today’s youth is capable of doing anything they want and carry the nation to the pinnacle of success. We don’t have to be Gandhi or Bhagat Singh for that. What we need is passion and determination, courage and the will to do good to others since now its not the British we have to fight but poverty, illiteracy, discrimination, terrorism and the like. The article inspired me a lot and I thought that I will change the future of my country and help India shine in every possible arena. I firmly believed that my friends will too do so as we all are full of passion to do something good for our country. But that was 6 years back. Now I’m 19 and I know that its not as easy as the author of that article made it to be. I’m sure everyone will agree, right? So now even I have joined the club like millions of other Indians where we only question-“Why is that the dream of creating a free India still remains unfulfilled? Why does freedom for many still not include socio-economic freedom? Why this, why that? Why? We may come up with many complicated reasons. However, the answer is quite simple. Surprised? Don’t...

The Elephant and the Dragon Book Report

...If you were to look at a history of global economics over the years, you would find that many countries achieve (and sometimes fall from) economic superpower status. Examples of such countries include the U.S, the U.K, and Japan. The most current countries to join that list are India and China. However, whether they stay that way has yet to be seen. The Elephant and the Dragon written by Robyn Meredith takes a look at both countries’ rise to economic superpower status, and how it affects us now as well as the future. To achieve this Meredith begins with a recent history of each of the countries by examining the political and social factors related to the each of the countries’ rise.  This is followed with a look into some of the economic similarities and differences between India and China as well as how the reforms both countries have in place affect U.S businesses and citizens.  Through this process Meredith truly gives a truly complete experience with past, present and future analyzed. Unfortunately, there are certain areas of the book where issues with the material and Meredith’s interpretation arise. The first two chapters in The Elephant and the Dragon delve into the pasts of China and India, and the policies that made their growth possible. Meredith begins her look into China by looking at the effects of Mao’s rule. A major point that is brought up is Mao’s policy to collectivize farming. The policy to collectivize farming resulted in a 40% drop in agricultural production...

...lifeline to the government in India where economic growth has slowed sharply. But the Swedish company sought a 10-year window to comply with rules that foreign retailers source 30 percent from local small and medium-sized firms, a requirement which overseas companies say discourages investment. When contacted by Reuters, IKEA said a short delay in its formal application to enter the Indian market would not affect its decision to open stores, and hoped to start operations soon. The stakes are high for both sides. India offers IKEA a huge new market while the government is battling heavy criticism over its management of Asia's third-largest economy where growth has slipped to its weakest pace in nine years. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Friday that IKEA's planned entry was proof that investors still had confidence in India. WINDOW A government source involved in formulating retail policy called IKEA's proposed phase-in period "too long". "They'll rework it, I'm sure," the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. An IKEA spokesman said the time period to implement the sourcing rules was "not set in stone". The requirements underscore the potential pitfalls for foreign...

India Industrial Policy

...Industrial Policy – 1991 Introduction The Industrial Policy announced on July 24, 1991 by the Finance Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh heralded the economic reforms in India and sought to drastically alter the industrial scenario in our country. The Industrial Policy Statement of 1991 stated that “the Government will continue to pursue a sound policy framework encompassing encouragement of entrepreneurship, development of indigenous technology through investment in research and development, bringing in new technology, dismantling of the regulatory system, development of the capital markets and increased competitiveness for the benefit of common man". It further added that "the spread of industrialization to backward areas of the country will be actively promoted through appropriate incentives, institutions and infrastructure investments”. WHY THE POST-1990 REFORMS? It is well known that from 1951 to 1991, Indian policy-makers stuck to a path of centralized economic planning accompanied by extensive regulatory controls over the economy. The strategy was based on an ‘inward-looking import substitution’ model of development. This was evident from the design of the country’s Second Five-Year Plan (1956-61), which had been heavily influenced by the Soviet model of development. Several official and expert reviews undertaken by the government recommended incremental liberalization of the economy in different areas, but these did not address the fundamental issues facing the economy. ...
