An Avoidable Death
“Henny Youngman once said, ‘If you're going to do something tonight that you'll be sorry for tomorrow morning, sleep late’. Why are you sleeping early?”, a croaky female voice gently said to me on Friday, February 14, 2014. That quote is one of my grandfather’s two favorite quotes. The other is, “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment” by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Recently, I saw a quote online that joined both meanings. It read, “Be yourself, and do what you want; if it’s something you’ll regret in the morning, sleep late!”. I couldn’t agree more with the quote, but all my life, I’d opposed. That night helped me realize that it’s very easy to live a …show more content…
“Wake up!” she yelled. Her voice was the loudest sound I’d heard all evening. Even though I perceived that the waves were flowing, the owls were hooting, and the bass from the music at a beach carnival about two miles away was throbbing, my head filtered them out, and the only sounds I’d heard in the past hour are the beats of my racing heart. I lifted my head from a dry wooden texture and saw that I wasn’t at the beach anymore. I was in a small room whose only source of light was a table lamp pointed directly at me. The odor of fresh breeze had been traded for the odor of pine, and the taste of salty air for that of wood. I looked over at the woman, who had on an oversized cloak that left out only her bright red lipstick on her mouth. “Where is Albert?” she asked glaring at me. “I didn’t kill him!” I …show more content…
He enjoyed the luxury the island offered and appreciated that I chose to go there. My enthusiasm soon ended when I noticed that everywhere we went, there was a man. He was stalking us; he was stalking me! A tall muscular man with striking eyes and a cold gaze locked on me like magnets. I convinced myself that I was being paranoid, the man was a harmless person on vacation, and it was a coincidence he was everywhere. “Nobody said he’s dead, so” she paused, removed the cloak, revealed her black pantsuit and blue bow tie, and sat across the table. “How do you know he’s dead?”, she continued as she put her detective badge on the table for me to see. “Great! Before my remarks, I was a suspect, but now, I’m surely guilty” I thought. “I’m sorry; I panicked. He went to the beach carnival he was looking forward to”. I lied in a calm, pleading voice. He didn’t want to go; I forced him to. “You killed him!” she shouted. “I didn’t” I responded. She looked at me in the eye and said, “You just confessed”. “Okay fine!”, I cried, “He’s lost because I’m such a fool! Please, help me find him”, I

Living History

...___________________________ LIVING HISTORY Hillary Rodham Clinton Simon & Schuster New York • London • Toronto • Sydney • Singapore To my parents, my husband, my daughter and all the good souls around the world whose inspiration, prayers, support and love blessed my heart and sustained me in the years of living history. AUTHOR’S NOTE In 1959, I wrote my autobiography for an assignment in sixth grade. In twenty-nine pages, most half-filled with earnest scrawl, I described my parents, brothers, pets, house, hobbies, school, sports and plans for the future. Forty-two years later, I began writing another memoir, this one about the eight years I spent in the White House living history with Bill Clinton. I quickly realized that I couldn’t explain my life as First Lady without going back to the beginning―how I became the woman I was that first day I walked into the White House on January 20, 1993, to take on a new role and experiences that would test and transform me in unexpected ways. By the time I crossed the threshold of the White House, I had been shaped by my family upbringing, education, religious faith and all that I had learned before―as the daughter of a staunch conservative father and a more liberal mother, a student activist, an advocate for children, a lawyer, Bill’s wife and Chelsea’s mom. For each chapter, there were more ideas I wanted to discuss than space allowed; more people to include than could be named; more places visited than could be described...
