Communication Matters in Today’s Business World
One of the distinguishing mark of subtle mind is the ability to communicate effectively. It is essential for a CPA communicate adequately with his/her co-workers, managers or clients. Solid communication skills are critical for being an efficient employee and, thriving to improve those skills will help a CPA grow in his professional life.
These skills include verbal communication, written communication through e-mails, tax research papers, writing memos internally or just writing letters to clients. The purpose of communications is the promotion of mutual understanding between two more people. This is truer than ever. According to International Accounting Education Standards Board (AIAESB), successful accountants must be able to “present, discuss, report and defend views effectively through formal, informal, written and spoken communication; and …. Listen and read effectively”
Influential leaders in the United States such as John F Kenney, Martin Luther King, Jr., Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, to name a few used their superior communication skills to inspire and unite people behind the idea at both nationally and internationally. As a result, their words changed the nation and the world.
Leadership and communication are inseparable in business. Lee Iacocca is known for excellent communication skills and turning Chrysler around in the 80’s when he was Chief Executive Officer. According to Iacocca, “The most important thing He learned in school was to communicate” He has several New York Times Bestsellers. He describes nine elements for a successful leadership. One of the elements is communicating.
There are at least five elements of effective communication: The sender, the receiver, message, the channel and feedback.

Given the significant and wide-spread impact of business people’s decisions on multiple constituents (e.g., customers, employees, shareholders, competitors, and suppliers), how they make decisions matters. Unethical decisions harm the decision makers themselves as well as others, whereas ethical decisions have the opposite effect. Based on data from a study on strategic decision making by 16 effective chief executive officers (and three not-soeffective ones as contrast), I propose a model for ethical decision making in business in which reasoning (conscious processing) and intuition (subconscious processing) interact through forming, recalling, and applying moral principles necessary for long-term success in business. Following the CEOs in the study, I employ a relatively new theory, rational egoism, as the substantive content of the model and argue it to be consistent with the requirements of longterm business success.
