Created roughly 4,000-5,000 years ago in China, the earliest versions of something like chopsticks were used for cooking (they’re perfect for reaching into pots full of hot water or oil) and were most likely made from twigs. While it’s difficult to nail down a firm date, it would seem it wasn’t until around 500-400 AD that they began being used as table utensils.
One factor that contributed to this switch was a population boom across the country. Consequently, resources, particularly for cooking, became incredibly scarce. As a result, people began cutting their food into tiny pieces so it would cook faster.
The bite sized morsels rendered table knives obsolete, as there was very little left to cut. However, they were now perfect for eating with chopsticks, which were also made from cheap materials and easily made. Thus, a trend was born.
The table knife’s decline in popularity in these regions at this time can also be attributed to the teachings of Confucius, who was a vegetarian. He believed that knives weren’t appropriate to eat with. As Confucius supposedly said,
The honourable and upright man keeps well away from both the slaughterhouse and the kitchen. And he allows no knives on his table.
It was due to this that it’s believed that Chinese chopsticks are traditionally blunt at the tip and thus somewhat poor choices to try to spear food as you would with a fork.
Within about a century of this, chopsticks had migrated to other Asian countries, such as Japan, Korea and Vietnam. One distinct difference between Japanese and Chinese chopsticks was that the former were made from a single piece of bamboo that were joined at the base. In addition, Japanese chopsticks were originally used solely for religious ceremonies. Regardless of their differences, chopsticks remained popular in both countries and are still the primary utensil of choice.
While the early chopsticks were more often than not made of some cheap material, such as bamboo, later silver chopsticks were sometimes used during Chinese dynastic times in order to prevent food poisoning. How? It was believed that silver utensils would turn black if they came into contact with any life threatening toxins. Unfortunately for those engaging in this practise, silver doesn’t turn black when it touches the likes of cyanide or arsenic, among other poisons. However, it most definitely can change colour if touched by garlic, onion or rotten eggs – all of which release hydrogen sulfide which reacts with the silver causing it to change colour.
For anyone that has ever had difficulty eating rice with chopsticks, you may have wondered why anyone would choose this particular utensil for consuming such food with. Perhaps one of the earliest of table utensils, such as the spoon, would work better here. But you see, in Asia, the majority of rice is either a short or medium grain variety often with starches that are particularly gummy or clumpy. As such, it sticks together and is quite easily picked up by chopsticks. In comparison, many Westerners eat long grain rice (often highly processed) with is much fluffier and the individual grains are more distinct and for the unpracticed hand, difficult to eat with chopstics.

...Reaction paper (El Presidente 2012) “El Presidente” movie brought into life the story of the first president of the Republic of the Philippines, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo. It is not a film for all Filipinos but only for those who have high regard to Philippine Independence. If you are Andres Bonifacio fanatic, this is not for you. Members of the Bonifacio clan might be of total outrage right now for the film has put Bonifacio in somewhat a ‘bad light. Directed by Mark Meily, “El Presidente” offers a beautiful journey back to history with great action scenes and cinematography. The lines, in Filipino, Spanish, and English are well-thought. Casting big names in Philippine showbiz like Cesar Montano, Christopher De Leon, Allan Paule, Sid Lucero, and Joko Diaz, among others was a good move as they portrayed their roles excellently. Montano‘s portrayal as Bonifacio is believable and is deserving of his Metro Manila Film Festival Best Supporting Actor award though those who have watched him portrayed Jose Rizal might have a hard time picturing him as Bonifacio. Having comedian Bayani Agbayani in the cast is okay, just that his mustache looks funny. The same goes with the other cast who wear funny looking mustaches. The lead actor, George ‘E.R Ejercito’ Estregan, Jr., portrayed Aguinaldo’s character very well though it is hard to believe that it was really him portraying the lead for the film he produced. There’s nothing wrong with that if it’s just for the sake of arts or even if it...

History 2

...El Presidente, The movie was part of the MMMF and landed second. It’s somehow a great movie but it was lacking a lot of things. It works on a plan whether on what Emilio Aguinaldo did and what he did to become the first President of country. The attempts of the movie was epic, it’s like you didn’t knew that was coming and anything. There are movies that are related to this like ‘Asiong Salonga’ but in El Presidente it’s more excited than Asiong. El Presidente is a movie that will reflect to kids of this generation because, I don’t know how many kids are interested about the First Philippine Republic, but this movie will bring them to being from ‘ngur-ngur’ to being a bit interested about the Philippine Government. I believe in this movie, it depends on which side you’ll go with if it is Aguinaldo or the other one. It’s at this lack that I guess I can make a jab at Jeorge Estregan’s portrayal of Aguinaldo. I understand his acting limitations, and, he couldn’t register that much facial expressions. Aguinaldo here is a wooden character, idealized as the best leader. There’s more time spent dressing him up in different costumes, and there are so many “photo-op” moments, where at times the movie actually goes into stills, rather than any time spent exploring his character, seeing what makes him tick. First off, the film is loose with its history. It draws mostly from Aguinaldo’s memoir, but that is only one perspective, and an obviously biased one at that. (This might be a...

...ing a history buff, I really made time to watch "El Presidente," about the President of the First Philippine Republic, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo. It is about time that era in Philippine History was given a definitive movie rendition. I had high hopes about this film, since producer Laguna Gov. Jeorge "E.R." Ejercito (as Jeorge ER Estregan) gave us a very well-made biopic of gangster Asiong Salonga in last year's MMFF. It had not been easy to find time to watch since this film had a formidable running time of two hours and thirty minutes. It was so annoying that into film. Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo (Estregan) and his generals were about to launch an attack to take over the town of Cavite Viejo. From there, it follows the life of Aguinaldo, from the events leading up to the declaration of Philippine Independence on June 12, 1898, to his capture in Palanan by the Americans, up to his death at the age of 94 in the year 1964. The battle scenes were very well shot with a huge cast of real extras playing the soldiers of all nationalities. There were some impressive close-up stop-motion special effects during the fight scenes, as we saw in films like "300" or "Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter". The film did not shirk to tackle very controversial historical issues about Aguinaldo's role in the deaths of Andres Bonifacio and Antonio Luna. They did not hide the fact that all this was based on the memoirs of El Presidente himself, hence the probable bias in point of view. Now, what truly happened...

...In Other Words This book addresses the need for a systematic approach to the training of translators and provides an explicit syllabus which reflects some of the main intricacies involved in rendering a text from one language into another. It explores the relevance of some of the key areas of modern linguistic theory and illustrates how an understanding of these key areas can guide and inform at least some of the decisions that translators have to make. It draws on insights from current research in such areas as lexical studies, text linguistics and pragmatics to maintain a constant link between language, translation, and the social and cultural environment in which both language and translation operate. In Other Words examines various areas of language, ranging from the meaning of single words and expressions to grammatical categories and cultural contexts. Firmly grounded in modern linguistic theory, the book starts at a simple level and grows in complexity by widening its focus gradually. The author explains with clarity and precision the concepts and theoretical positions explored within each chapter and relates these to authentic examples of translated texts in a variety of languages, although a knowledge of English is all that is required to understand the examples presented. Each chapter ends with a series of practical exercises which provide the translator with an opportunity to test the relevance of the issues discussed. This combination of theoretical discussion and...
