Sydnie Crockett wrote the article “My life as a foster mom” that was published in the Globe and Mail on Thursday, Oct. 07, 2010. This article talks about her role as a caregiver, in other words a foster mom, and her struggles with not only the children and youth that come but also with her own personal life. She has fostered 20 children, some that come and go in and out of her life and other children that stay for years. She is a 57 year old woman that devotes her life trying to help people; she doesn’t ask or push the children to telling her their stories but rather supports their privacy. Her place isn’t to replace the parents of those children but rather stabilize their lives by providing a safe environment full of the necessities of life; food, shelter, and love. Although this isn’t a fairy tale ending for everyone involved, Sydnie keeps her head high and continues to help even though she loses her own friends in the process. With the support of her loving husband, for 6 years and counting, Sydnie Crockett is helping to change lives.
I find it interesting that a foster parent isn’t informed of things that one should know if there are many other people/children present. “I don't know who their friends are, who has had chicken pox, who has had vaccinations” (Sydnie Crockett, 2010). I can understand how Crockett may not know the friends of these children because the child may not have very many friends or at least not close friends depending on the situation. If these children are moved from foster home to foster home every few months then how could they have time to really develop the kind of friendship with someone that you would tell your parents or other adults about? What I do find strange is that since there are other children in the house, knowing whether a child has
