Re: Recommendation for Microsoft Office 2003 Upgrade.

Introduction The purpose of the report is to recommend which of the available office suites should be obtained to upgrade the obsolete version of Microsoft Office 2003.
Microsoft Office 2003, which we use now, has become obsolete and is no longer able to satisfy our daily office needs. Mainstream support for Office 2003 ended April 14, 2009, and extended support will end April 8, 2014. The claims are based upon such drawbacks as: incompatibility with the newer file extensions widely used by our partners and clients, outdated templates and tools, Outlook’s search issues, etc. All these factors not only cause frustration, but negatively affect the company’s image as well.
Several potential solutions were examined and the choice was narrowed to two office suites: Microsoft Office 2013 and LibreOffice 4.
Each solution has been evaluated according to the criteria below, from most important to least important:
1. Cost.
2. Functionality.
3. Interface and compatibility.
4. Technical support.

Scope

The most important factor when choosing between the possible solutions is their cost.
The suite we choose must be able to fulfill our office’s daily needs and even more, to ensure its usability years ahead. Thus, functionality is the second factor.
The third factor is interface and compatibility because the new applications must be user-friendly, with intuitive GUI, and must support all the necessary formats.
The last but not least is technical support. We must ensure that the software we choose will be supported by its developer for a sufficient time.

Discussion

Cost.

MS Office
Of all possible solutions, including the ones, not taken into consideration, MS Office 2013 is the only paid office suite.

Broadman Upgrade

...is to address the software upgrade between all of Boardman’s locations. Boardman is comprised of three hotels, a convention center, four restaurants, two gift shops, a pro shop, and a spa. Each location operates independently of the other locations. However, all locations are managed by Boardman Management Group (BMG). Each location has different software and BMG would like to have a consistent way of communication and sharing documents between all locations. Smith Systems Consulting can solve and correct the issue of different software at different locations in the following way; 1. Provide a consistent software recommendation for all locations 2. Provide basic system requirements for the software upgrades 3. Provide direction on how all software can be implemented at the different locations. Consistent Software First, to address the issue of different software and different operating systems; it is important to have a consistent product installed at all locations. This will allow for easy transfer of documents between locations. There is no need to upgrade the operating systems at all locations if you use the same word software at all locations. It is important to have the same word software for compatibility issues. This can be addressed with a Microsoft Office software upgrade such as Office 2007 or 2010. Microsoft Office has the ability to save documents in older form to allow for compatibility with the newer versions of Office. Basic System Requirements ...

Project Plan for Word Processing Upgrade

...Project Plan for Word Processing Upgrade Project Plan for Word Processing Upgrade 1.0 Overview The Information Technology (IT) Services department of Boardman Management Group has decided to enhance the company’s word processing capabilities at all of its’ Baderman Island Resort locations. Baderman Island Resort currently consists of three hotels, a convention center, a pro shop, two gift shops, four restaurants, and a spa. All business units are managed by Boardman Management Group but operate independently. The IT Services department has determined that there are three different versions of the Microsoft Word software application being used by Baderman Island Resort and as many operating systems. Their immediate goal is to standardize the current word processing capabilities throughout the company, which could result in an upgrade to the existing hardware configuration and operating system. Boardman Management Group has decided to outsource this initiative to Smith System Consulting (SSC) because they do not have the in-house technical expertise to determine the most cost-effective path forward. They want to make sure the new solution seamlessly integrates with their existing software applications with the least amount of impact to performance and productivity. They would also like to keep the downtime needed to implement the new solution to an absolute minimum to ensure the company can respond adequately to the demands of their guests and customers during the cut-over...

Intro to Networking: Case Study Part 4

...both Linux and Microsoft versions of servers. My recommendations are included at the conclusion of this report. There are many reasons as to why we should upgrade our current infrastructure to a client server network. The company has grown to a point where we have physically out grown our current peer-to-peer network. Currently, our corporate office does not have immediate and live access to the Chicago and New York offices. This poses a lack of effectiveness and efficiency that a server network will solve. First let’s dive into what a client server is. A client server is a type of computing in which one powerful workstation (the server) serves the requests of other computers (the subordinates or client machines). A server is the powerful computer on the network and provides services to the other systems. Servers usually have a database integrated in them, large amounts of memory, advanced configuration, make the management of a network centralized and easy to work with and processes the requests of the client machines. Certainly, there are a multitude of options however; I will focus on the main differences between Linux and Microsoft.   Microsoft continues to dominate the software as well as the server market. Microsoft holds an approximate 49% stake in this market. They are one of the leaders and innovators of this industry and should continue this trend well into the future due to their relentless pursuit of research and development. Microsoft Server 2003 is server software...

Zara

...performance. The concern is the current system is out of date and there is a possibility that hardware vendors will upgrade their machines leaving them incompatible with DOS. As well, Zara’s core business model is speed and responsiveness, this system is unable to keep up with this model. By assessing the pros and cons of the new IT system, with Zara’s brand image, I determined that implementing the new operating system and POS terminals is beneficial for Zara because 1. It will help to improve efficiency of information flow between Zara’s supply chain networks, 2. It removes the risk of the system becoming obsolete and no longer compatible with vendor’s machine upgrade, and 3. The new system will eliminate the need for small screen PDAs and their continuous upgrades.   Issue Identification Immediate Issues - The current DOS system has not been supported by Microsoft since 2003. - Personal digital assistants (PDAs) have small screens and make it time consuming for managers to do daily tasks such as orders and returns. - The screens on the PDAs are small, therefore making it difficult to view new items. - The availability of several PDAs at each store location allows for redundancy at time of ordering. - The POS terminals and PDAs contain no information about theoretical inventory within each store. Systemic Issues - Hardware vendor for POS terminals could upgrade their machines which would no longer be compatible with the DOS system. While they have said they would not...

...Uncontested UI Supremacy In the battle between Microsoft Business Solutions (MBS) and the UK-based the Sage Group plc (LSE: SGE.L) for the small-to-medium enterprise (SME) market segment, technology choices will be a major factor. The previous parts of this note detailed the strategies of these two major vendors and analyzed how the market would respond. But, going a mile further, there are some important areas where the synergy and a bridge between MBS and the rest of the "classic" Microsoft world could take place, such as the previously mentioned "user experience" mantra. The basic hypothesis is that Office (i.e., Word, Excel, and Outlook) constitute the core of the user experiences of many millions of existing and prospective desktop customers. Leveraging that ubiquitous look-and-feel acquaintance in the MBS product lines (and in those of rapidly increasing independent software vendors [ISV]) is something that can add tremendous clout to MBS sales efforts—with the supposedly minimal training for the information technology (IT)-resource constrained SME market. In fact, the ongoing Outlook, Excel, or Word user interface (UI) metaphor moves may speak volumes about where the entire market is going. Possibly the most vocal in that regard could be the recent announcement made by Microsoft and SAP that they are jointly developing a product that will integrate back-end SAP business processes and transactional data into Microsoft Office front-ends. The product, code-named Project...

Riordan

...Running head:   Human Resource System Executive Summary In 1992, Riordan Manufacturing Inc., implemented and established human resource information system (HRIS), which was included as part of a financial package. The HRIS package included functions such as maintaining personnel information, pay rate and tax information, hire and seniority dates, vacation leave for non-exempt employees, and organizational information. However, certain areas of the HRIS could be improved upon and developed. One area that needs improvement is the network communications between headquarters and all the Riordan plants. Improvements are also needed in central repository, resume storage, maintaining training and knowledge skills information, online employee user interface, and a central location for updating and maintaining employee personal and professional information. Improving the current HRIS activities would be advantageous to Riordan leadership and their employees. Hugh McMCauley, the COO for Riordan Manufacturing requested that the human resources (HR) system be analyzed to integrate the existing variety of tools in use in the present day to a single integrated application. The request will take advantage of a more sophisticated look for information systems technology in the HR department at Riordan Manufacturing. After the project is to be completed, Riordan Manufacturing will then be left with a detailed project plan that will provide a list of tasks, resources, schedule and budget required...

Service Request Sr-Rm-004, Part 2

...Service Request SR-rm-004, Part 2 BSA 375 November 15, 2010 Mary Burton Currently Riordan uses a very conventional, antiquated process for inventory management. Most inventory checks are done through a printed form and then handed off to an Inventory Clerk for data entry. This process consumes time and allows room for human error. To enhance the inventory management at Riordan Manufacturing, implementation of a barcode scanning system and Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) system is recommended. This system will provide full automation of inventory tracking from the receipt of raw materials to the shipment of finished products. This will reduce human error, accelerate the movement of inventory, and reduce stock-out. In addition, it will solve Riordan’s supply chain problem by implementing a shorter and more efficient supply chain process. Riordan Manufacturing’s objective in implementing a new inventory management process is to increase revenue and financial stability. Automation of the inventory management system will lessen human discrepancies/errors thus minimizing lost revenue/cost. The system will also minimize the time the current staff would need to enter manually inventory data allowing the company to effectively use those resources in other areas of the organization. This proposal outlines the need for Riordan Manufacturing to implement a new system(s) that will enhance their current inventory and manufacturing processes. Suggested implementation...

Linux vs Windows

...Windows vs. Linux Enterprise Distribution Recommendation Introduction to UNIX Linux vs. Windows Enterprise Distribution Recommendation X Industries is a large sized business that is in the midst of a decision regarding wither or not to switch their existing Windows-based IT system over to a less proprietary product, Linux. This is no easy choice to make, considering X Industries is currently running 170+ Windows-based servers of various types. Their staff fulfills company operations on these servers with their 750+ array of desktop and laptop computers – all running Windows XP Professional. Linux may just be a little dog in the Microsoft park, but a company that makes the big switch can expect Linux to yield benefits in cost savings, increased security, and arguably better usability. However, each individual enterprise situation is always different, so a cookie cutter solution of which system to use will never suffice. Rather, the numbers through subjects of cost, market share, programming capabilities, software compatibility and availability, and the ever-important user interface will tell the best choice. Cost The only way to evaluate cost is to get down to the basics, and look at the statistics. The first topic of cost will center solely on the price for Windows operating system software, first for the network side, then the node side. Other topics will focus on the cost of the Ubuntu Linux distribution, which will run on the servers and desktops,...

Riordan Manufacturing is preparing for an audit in compliance with SOX and is conducting an information systems security review over its physical and network security, data security, and Web security. Physical and Network Security Riordan Manufacturing performs an information systems security analysis over its physical and network security. Several elements of the IT system require revisions, such as restrictions to physical access to vital IT systems and upgrades to outdated systems within the network. Physical Security After analyzing the headquarters and Riordan’s other sites it was found that they were not designed nor equipped in the same fashion. The most important thing in the Riordan Manufacturing Company with the equipment and vital information there is no visible hard security protection. This makes all the sites, including headquarters, easily accessible through theft and people who have been fired under unfavorable circumstances. It will also include a SWOT analysis that will answer some primer questions. And a synthesis of the information evaluating the ability of the organization to implement the strategy using Kouzes and Posner’s Five Practices as a framework. | Microsoft Corporation is an American multinational corporation headquartered in Redmond, Washington, United States that develops, manufactures, licenses, and supports a wide range of products and services predominantly related to computing through its various product divisions. Established on April 4, 1975 to develop and sell BASIC interpreters for the Altair 8800, Microsoft rose to dominate the home computer operating system market with MS-DOS in the mid-1980s, followed by the Microsoft Windows line of operating systems.
