ENGL 250: #4 Documented Essay
Suggested Topics

For the Assignment #4 Documented Essay, you will present multiple viewpoints from a currently debated issue. You need to draw your topic from the issues and controversies discussed in Rereading America, or a current debate in anthrozoology (human-animal studies). Here is a list of suggested topics. You may choose one of these, or create your own with instructor approval. Look through the table of contents and chapter introductions in Rereading America and find a debate or a controversy that interests you, and develop your topic in the form of a question that could have multiple answers. Your topic must be narrowly focused enough to cover adequately in a 5-7 page paper.

Family & Relationships: * Do children need to be raised by both a mom and a dad? * An increasing number of people are opting not to become parents. Is this bad for society? * Can a parent who uses marijuana recreationally still be a good role model? * Does lifelong monogamous marriage represent the ideal partnership? * Should prostitution be legalized? Is it wrong to pay for sex? * Should the government prohibit genetically engineering babies? * In what circumstances, if any, should assisted suicide be legal?

Education: * Should colleges require classes in history, arts, and humanities? * Do too many kids go to college? * Should student loan debts be forgiven? * Should the government fund college educations? * Should parents be allowed to homeschool/unschool their children? * Are for-profit colleges bad for students? * Are public schools designed to produce mindless workers?

Money and Success: * Are the rich taxed enough? * Should Americans have access to socialized health care? * Do all Americans, regardless of race, gender, or socioeconomic background, truly have an…...

...determining the magnitude of the problem where a more experienced individual would not have as hard a time. There is a need for accounting experience and preferably some past auditing experience also. Having experience in accounts payable and receivable, and payroll is valuable plus knowing how to use QuickBooks and other accounting software would help to ensure they check everything. Recommendation I will recommend Courtney Smith to the company for internal auditor because she has a Master’s degree in Accounting and has 10 years experience working for various companies in similar roles as an accountant and internal auditor. She has worked for a Fortune 500 company before and was given praise for her work ethic and insight and comes highly recommended by past employers. She has completed hundreds of internal audits during her career and has a high success rate. There has not been an instance in which her work has been questioned or any action taken against her. Courtney makes sure she covers every area and does a thorough investigation regarding a company’s position and financial documents also checking systems and safeguards. She takes her time to cover everything but always meets the deadlines set by a company to have a report submitted. I believe the experience from not only her education but also previous employment would make Courtney stand out among her peers as her success speaks for itself. I do not see where the company could find a more qualified individual. I......

...selecting topic one, identify the audience, and provide a preliminary thesis statement. The topic I chose is “Should changes be made to the regulations for foods that are served in public schools”. My audience is everyone who has kids attending public schools. Meals served in school not all makes children in the USA overweight or obese but also makes them less involved in physical activities. The thesis statement for this is to improve the quality of meals keeping in mind nutrition standards that has been served in public schools. School meals should include fruits and vegetables foods rich in whole grains in their menu. • Explain the reason for selecting topic two, identify the audience, and provide a preliminary thesis statement. The second topic I chose is “Should children of parents who do not allow them to be vaccinated be allowed to attend public school". My audience is parents of children who are attending public schools. All vaccines are regulated by US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for safety and effectiveness. Children’s’ who are not vaccinated are prone to serious illness and can cause health risk to other children’s who are vaccinated. Therefore, children who are not vaccinated should not be allowed to attend the public school. The thesis statement for this is that vaccination is safe and prevents illness, including rubella, diphtheria, and whooping cough and all children’s should be vaccinated. • Explain the reason for selecting topic three,......

Best thing when learning newer terms is to integrated within your writing or having conservations with others to learn how to use them properly. existing lists and Another strategy I would use using the term or word whether in conversation or writing as it would help me familiarize myself more with the term or word. I learned a lot of new applications that I will definitely utilize. I have used Previewing a few times in the past but have never made a habit of it. I think it will be a great thing to start using though. It allows you to get a great feel for how long the chapter is and how long it should take you to read. As well as giving you an idea of what the main topics are going to be. Marking is a great way to condense an entire chapter into just the important ideas. That way when it comes time to studying you already have the important parts highlighted or underlined. I have already started to get ideas for making sure I have a place I can read with concentration. I plan on doing a lot of my reading this summer outside on the patio where I have peace and quiet. When the weather is not permitting or when it gets colder again I plan on going to the library or setting my office up with a corner that I am able to read in. The last of the four steps is going to be very important if I want my study time to be efficient. I will often check back to previous notes and assignments so that the ideas stay......

...few minerals, vitamins, and other nutritional components is much more difficult that I would have guessed, even for just one day! Though I did manage to find the right combination of foods which would provide me the recommended amount of various nutrients in one day, I cannot eat the same thing every day! Planning the one day took research and attention to detail which I have never used toward planning my daily diet before. I was very happy with the result as I got to enjoy three great meals and a few snacks as well (all similar to my normal eating schedule and habits). It was interesting to see that foods I do enjoy and eat regularly can be combined into a one day super-diet! This reassured me that it is completely possible to plan a healthy diet and maintain it because it includes foods I already enjoy. The most shocking aspect of the diet that I noticed while doing this assignment was that my sodium levels were way outside of the recommended range. I knew that lots of food products have crazy amounts of sodium from my athletic trainers and coaches warnings during my participation in high school sports. I realized during this process that I have not done as good of a job at watching out for that as I thought! The sodium was still a part of the recommended diet that I had to work with a lot, so I am now even more aware and will watch out for its presence in food. I was very proud to see I met the fiber requirements, though I cannot say I’m surprised because I’ve......

...Leroy Thomas HIS 211 Topic A Jimmy Hampton June 2, 2014 Jonathan Edwards evoked vivid, terrifying images of the utter corruption of human nature and the terrors awaiting the unrepentant in hell. Jonathan Edwards’s famous description of the sinner as a loathsome spider suspended by a slender thread over a pit of seething brimstone in his best known sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.”(1741) The First Great Awakening also gained impetus from the wide-ranging American travels of an English preacher, George Whitefield. Although Whitefield had been ordained as a minister in the Church of England, he later allied with other Anglican clergymen who shared his evangelical bent, most notably John and Charles Wesley. Together they led a movement to reform the Church of England (much as the Puritans had attempted earlier to reform that church) which resulted in the founding of the Methodist Church late in the eighteenth century. During his several trips across the Atlantic after 1739, Whitefield preached everywhere in the American colonies, often drawing audiences so large that he was obliged to preach outdoors. What Whitefield preached was nothing more than what other Calvinists had been proclaiming for centuries that sinful men and women were totally dependent for salvation on the mercy of a pure, all-powerful God. But Whitefield and many American preachers who eagerly imitated his style presented that message in novel ways. Gesturing dramatically, sometimes......

...Choose your topic. Try to make it as creative as possible; if you're given the opportunity to choose your own, take advantage of this. Choose something you're particularly interested in because this will make it easier to write; in particular, try to select the topic as a result of pressing questions you already know you want to search for answers to. Once you've decided on a topic, be sure to hone down it to a do-able topic; often a topic is initially too broad in its coverage, which will make it impossible to complete within the time and space constraints given. Narrow down your topic to something that can really be worked within the boundaries of the paper. If the topic is already chosen for you, start exploring unique angles that can set your content and information apart from the more obvious approaches many others will probably take. Finally, whatever angle your topic takes, it should be both original in approach and insightful, something the reader will be drawn into and fascinated by. Take great care not to choose a topic and be so set on how you see the outcome of your paper that you're closed to new ideas and avenues of thinking as you work through the paper. This is known in academia as "premature cognitive commitment". It can mar an otherwise good paper because an outcome that is pre-determined in your head, regardless of the research findings along the way, will be molded to fit the outcome, rather than the outcome reflecting a genuine analysis of the......

...The topic I would like to choose is about auto industry, in recent years, cars had played a vital role in people’s everyday life, and it makes life much more easier than ever before. With the rise of gas price, people are more and more concern about what type of energy they will use after using up gas? What I concern is not only the current state of this sector, but also the future car technology. I want to find the issues and opportunities of future car technology. The answers I would like to know by searching this topic are listed. First, I want to know the current situation about auto industry, is there enough gas for us to use? How long can we use before exhaustion of resources. Second, what exactly is new energy, how many types of energy are there can be used on vehicles, is new energy expensive, and the process of what’s the rate of process. Finally, I would like to know what would be the future operation strategies for large auto companies like Toyota, Benz, BMW, etc. I think this paper will be as long as 5 to 7 pages, I will first focus on current auto industry state, how much fuel we use everyday, and raise up to future auto industry, relating with future car technology, site the resources which I found on Wall street Journal and give my own analysis. I found that it might be hard to search for the topic that is completely what I want; I will spend more time on this....

"Another most common use of reference citations is to give credit to the original author of work you use" ("Political science department," 2006). This will help the writer to keep his/her work fair and avoid plagiarism. Discussion #2:  What process have you employed or expect to employ to ensure your reference list is accurate and complete?  I have been using the college library database to use only peer reviewed journals and articles to support my work. After retrieving the required journals I am filtering them to make sure that the work I am referring to is helpful to support my topic or not. Then to provide correct information in the reference list I am referring to APA, 2010 book for generating accurate and complete information in the reference list. ...innate or just part of general cognition? The specific way that we acquire language is a contentious debate in the field of linguistics. Some researchers believe that humans are born with an innate, specialized mental module which facilitates the acquisition of language in young children. Other researchers believe that language acquisition occurs through general cognitive capabilities that are not necessarily language-specific. For this topic, you may either a) Choose a position in this debate and defend your position, or b) based on your research into these two sides, discuss what type of argument or evidence would be required to settle this debate in favour of either side. Whichever approach you choose, make sure to focus on specific types of evidence, whether they are phonological, syntactic, or otherwise, and how that evidence bears on the larger question. ...Topic 1: What career would you like to choose after leaving school Model answer: Today, it is not easy to choose a career. Hundreds of students pass various examinations every year and compete with one another for positions in the various professions which are not so many as there are applicants. I would, however, like to choose teaching as my career. Teaching is an interesting career for several reasons. As a teacher I can learn many things, especially if I teach to an udder-secondary school. If I teach History or English, for example, I have to read many books to make my teaching lessons more interesting to my pupils. Thus, I can acquire more knowledge of the subjects that I teach than what I can learn from the class text books. It is indeed a fact that a teacher learns a lot from the class text books; but that is hardly enough to make the teacher's lessons interesting to pupils. A good teacher must therefore read many other books. Again, as a teacher, I have to speak well so that my pupils will be able to understand my instructions well. In this way I can improve my powers of expression. Even my pronunciation of words will improve to great extent. Further, as a teacher, I shall have enough leisure to read and prepare for various examinations. It is possible today to sit for many important examinations by studying entirely at home. Thus, I can acquire important qualifications. Finally, as a teacher I will be respected as an educated person. People will......
