Have you ever been blamed for something that is beyond your power? In the memoir "Red Scarf Girl", Ji-li is a proud and fortunate girl who lives with a smile on her face. However, that all changes once the Cultural Revolution comes after her like a full speed train.

"I was happy because I was always loved and respected. I was proud because I was able to excel and always expected to succeed." (Prologue, 4). Her happy and fantasy lifestyle was envied by her classmates and the rest of the poor community. But to her it was another day in her beautiful home with her family. Prior to her life changing discovery this is how Ji-li's life was in her eyes. Then in 1966 that all changed drastically. The Cultural Revolution was in full speed and her perfect and glorious life was at steak.

It's the election for the Red Successors and Ji-li is up. She is already nervous as it is and it doesn't help that Du Hai is ready to pull her under. As he realizes that Ji-li is on the verge of winning he asks her an inquiry that he knows will be impossible for her to answer. "Jiang Ji-li, what is your father’s class status?” (The Red Successors, 24). With a mischievous smirk on his face he purposefully shouts, “He was a—LANDLORD." As the crowd whispers in disbelief Ji-li becomes defensive and calls him a liar. Of course she becomes …show more content…
With a heavy heart she finally builds up the strength to ask her “It isn’t true, is it?... “Grandpa wasn’t a landlord, was he? Dad isn’t a rightist, is he?” (The Red Successors, 39). Her grandmother who is stunned by her questions immediately explains there situation. “Of course your father is not a rightist. Don’t listen to your classmates,..." (The Red Successors, 40). However, when Ji-li asks about her grandfather she responds with a nerve-racking answer. “Whatever he was, it doesn’t have anything to do with you. He’s been dead for over thirty years.” This does not help Ji-li at

Please forget about the exercise, my doubting you and enjoy the story. _____________ The night train ride from Kanpur to Delhi was the most memorable journey of my life. For one, it gave me my second book. And two, it is not every day you sit in an empty compartment and a young, pretty girl walks in. Yes, you see it in the movies, you hear about it from friend’s friend but it never happens to you. When I was younger, I used to look at the reservation chart stuck outside my train bogie to check out all the female passengers near my seat (F-17 to F-25)is what I’d look for most). Yet, it never happened. In most cases I shard my compartment with talkative aunties, snoring men and wailing infants. But this night was different. First, my compartment was empty. The Railways bad just started this new summer train and nobody knew about it. Second, I was unable to sleep. I had been to IIT Kanpur for a talk. Before leaving, I drank four cups of coffee in the canteen while chatting with students. Bad idea, given that it was going to be...

This paper provides insights into the roles and functions of the tattoos, and how the tattoos (batek) become cultural symbols of the intricate rituals brought about by community regimens of the Ilubo, Kalinga. No longer practiced, the batek of the Ilubo is a visually powerful rendering of symmetry and unity of designs. Batek now serve as an archive of culture for the group. I met an old Bontoc woman who sold balatinao (red rice) in one of the old market stalls in Baguio City. She was known to me only as Apong (grandmother), and her tattooed arms fascinated me each time she would pick up Humanities Diliman (January-June 2002) 3:1, 105-142 105 Salvador-Amores the grains and place them on her palm. The Picture of Dorian Gray Chapter I The studio was filled with the rich odor of roses, and when the light summer wind stirred amidst the trees of the garden there came through the open door the heavy scent of the lilac, or the more delicate perfume of the pinkflowering thorn. From the corner of the divan of Persian saddle-bags on which he was lying, smoking, as usual, innumerable cigarettes, Lord Henry Wotton could just catch the gleam of the honey-sweet and honey-colored blossoms of the laburnum, whose tremulous branches seemed hardly able to bear the burden of a beauty so flame-like as theirs; and now and then the fantastic shadows of birds in flight flitted across the long tussore-silk curtains that were stretched in front of the huge window, producing a kind of momentary Japanese effect, and making him think of those pallid jade-faced painters who, in an art that is necessarily immobile, seek to convey the sense of swiftness and motion. The sullen murmur of the bees shouldering their way through the long unmown grass, or circling with monotonous insistence round the black-crocketed spires of the early June hollyhocks, seemed to make the stillness 2 of 250 The Picture of Dorian Gray more oppressive...

Marketing - Chanel, Nike, Hot Topic

...1. Within the United States, especially in Southern California, an individual's appearance is crucial because it is used to make a first impression. A person is judged by what they wear and how they look. For example, it is probable that many people would perceive a person wearing ratty clothes as uneducated and irresponsible while a person looking pristine in a designer ensemble is assumed to be intelligent and successful. In every city, there are multiple fashion brands with different styles and ranges of apparel and accessories. Every season, new styles and designs are created which influence society. It appears as if more types of clothing exist than the actual number of people. With so many different alternatives of fashion, the fashion industry is trying to please too many customers with variety. There are currently various styles to choose from, and the clothes people wear categorize or label them long before they realize it. The three fashion brands that will be analyzed extensively are Chanel, Nike, and Hot Topic. These brands have apparel but are completely different in their target audience. Chanel is a prestigious high-fashion brand; Nike is a popular athletic line; Hot Topic is musically and artistically edgier with a smaller target audience between the three. With these apparel brands, a person wearing each would be labeled or even stereotyped. One wearing a Chanel’s 2012 Spring/Summer ready-to-wear designer outfit with a white jacket, lambskin dress with pearls...

...9 -5 1 2 -0 8 5 REV: MAY 25, 2012 ANAT KEINAN JILL AVERY FIONA WILSON MICHAEL NORTON EILEEN FISHER: Repositioning the Brand Hilary Old, vice president for communications, was one part excited and one part nervous, so she took a moment to adjust her scarf before she entered the meeting. It was January of 2010 and she and her colleagues were about to review the first retail sales results following a major strategic initiative to reposition and evolve the EILEEN FISHER brand. 2009 marked the 25th anniversary of EILEEN FISHER and the occasion gave the company the impetus to pause and assess its history. The company had enjoyed phenomenal success in its first quarter century: its growth in revenues and profits had been driven by both the strong brand loyalty of its core customers, and the opening of fifty retail stores dedicated to the brand. The company was consistently recognized as one of the best companies to work for and had an impressive environmental sustainability and social responsibility record. However, a startling discovery had emerged. The median customer age was currently at 59 and increasing each year, keeping pace with the age of the company’s visionary founder, Eileen Fisher. Despite the company’s best efforts to design age-less clothing to appeal to multiple generations, as Fisher herself aged, so too had the customer base. The company found itself stereotyped as a brand for older, and, to some extent, customers with larger body types. Old...

Gabriel's Inferno

...Prologue Florence, 1283 The poet stood next to the bridge and watched as the young woman approached. The world ground to a near standstill as he remarked her wide, dark eyes and elegantly curled brown hair. At first he didn’t recognize her. She was breathtakingly beautiful, her movements sure and graceful. Yet there was something about her face and figure that reminded him of the girl he’d fallen in love with long ago. They’d gone their separate ways, and he had always mourned her, his angel, his muse, his beloved Beatrice. Without her, his life had been lonely and small. Now his blessedness appeared. As she approached him with her companions, he bowed his head and body in a chivalrous salute. He had no expectation that his presence would be acknowledged. She was both perfect and untouchable, a browneyed angel dressed in resplendent white, while he was older, world-weary and wanting. She had almost passed him when his downcast eyes caught sight of one of her slippers — a slipper that hesitated just in front of him. His heart beat a furious tattoo as he waited, breathless. A soft and gentle voice broke into his remembrances as she spoke to him kindly. His startled eyes flew to hers. For years and years he’d longed for this moment, dreamed of it even, but never had he imagined encountering her in such a serendipitous fashion. And never had he dared hope he would be greeted so sweetly. Caught off balance, he mumbled his pleasantries and allowed himself the indulgence of a smile...
