Reflection Paper: Film “Heneral Luna” #KM2015
The film, “Heneral Luna”, 2015 is a Filipino historical biopic film about General Antonio Luna. It is indeed one of the most beautiful movies I’ve ever seen. The cinematography, cast, writing is really wonderful and realistic, although the language used is not what I expected because it looks too modern. The film shows the point of view of Gen. Antonio Luna in the system of the Philippines in the American invasion period. Furthermore, the movie carries joy, laughter, sorrow, grief, conflicts, and realizations especially when it became an eye opener for me. As an ‘International Studies’ student, it’s typical for us to have some interest in different culture other than us although I never actually detest our culture. However, with this film I observe a lot of admirable actions as well as a lot of flaws in our country all the way from the late 18th century. I also noticed that the Philippine government in the past greatly resembles the government issues in the present, just like how the cabinet members prefers to be under the power of United States to aim more money and superiority in their own state. Gen. Antonio Luna deserves to be one of our heroes. He showed great bravery, intelligence and he also became an inspiration to our fellow men during and even after the war. He really holds superior power and can lead people to follow him. The general also believes that no one is above the law even the highest ranking official or the president. Now, as the 2016 presidential elections approaches, Gen. Antonio Luna’s perspectives become an unofficial scoring ground to question the qualifications of the candidates from what I saw in the internet, what I heard while commuting and what I also thought of. However, I also thought that Gen. Luna does not listen to what the others think of. This a sort of a good attitude but sometimes it can also become really bad. He’s a bit narrow minded as a high ranking general as he lets his temper affect the whole situation. “Our greatest enemy is ourselves” Gen. Antonio Luna said in one of the scenes. This is the most impactful line that affected me. While watching the film, the thing I absolutely noticed is about how our fellowmen react with the war for our freedom. Starting from the never ending disagreements between the generals, down to the impassionate soldiers they have. We can’t even group ourselves as one but we hope for a victory, so ironic. I’m not even surprised when the Americans laugh at our own foolish acts. In the end, not only Gen. Luna was lost and was put in shame. But our whole country lost. The worst part of it, we didn’t lose with the war but we lost within ourselves. That’s the main reason why we lost and will continue to do so. We aim for a simple yet happy life, but we expect someone to do it for us in the midst of another western invasion.
After watching the film, I think there are two faces of selfishness we have, as a Filipino in the film. First, we are not selfish because we always choose our family than ourselves. Second, we are selfish when it comes in protecting our country. We don’t realize that killing our own Filipino brothers and sisters lead to the death of hope of the future. I also wonder why we always need to choose the temporary unsure safety than the permanent freedom of our own country.
If I were to choose between Bayan o Sarili. I will choose sarili, because in order to be a productive and good citizen in your country, you need to be responsible and kind in the smallest possible way starting from yourself. If you can’t win the temptation of evil, then you can never be a worthy citizen of your country.

Reflection Paper

...Art Reflection Paper Pop Culture and the Arts October 10, 2011 Art Reflection paper Art can be expressed in many ways. Art is seen in every aspect of our lives. The way people dress, wear their hair, makeup, and even the type of car they drive is a form of art. Artist use various ways to express art by the way they dray, the colors they use, creativity , and the style that they use to create fullness or dullness in the pictures. In this paper, I will discuss what art means to me. Next, I will elaborate on how art and culture relate. Finally, I will give two examples that illustrate how art and American culture relate. What Art Means to Me I think that art is a representation of a person’s inner feelings at that particular time. Art is more than just a painting on a canvass, it can be the lyrics of a song, the clothes that a person wears, a play, a poem, and even a hairstyle can be a form of art. Art is not something that can be duplicated or copied in its entirety. For example s writer can write a book and then a producer make a movie out of the book but the two will not be the same. How Does Art and Culture Relate Culture and art relate because art is formed and developed based on a person’s culture. Each culture has a certain style, certain foods that they eat, and a certain way they behave. Art is influenced by cultures. Different cultures have different views and often see the world differently from others. The quote “beauty is in the eye of the......

Reflection on the Film "Tuesdays with Morrie"

...Reflection on Tuesdays with Morrie film: “Life Reassessment, Love over Money, and Happiness over Success” When I was watching the film, I had no idea about its plot because unlike my classmates who have read the book, they know about it and that they would like to watch the film. Me, since I have no background of the movie, I think it’s kind of boring and I was ambivalent in watching it because I might not like the film. The film started with Morrie, a professor in a university who loves dancing and eating. He suffered from ALS, an incurable disease that ravages his body slowly from his foot to his upper body. He has a friend and former student Mitch who wanted to become a musician but abandoned that dream. Mitch had financial success and material wealth but he is unhappy. He has been working a lot and he finds little time for his girlfriend, Janine. Every Tuesday, Mitch visits Morrie and Morrie teaches Mitch about things in life. For me, the teaching that Morrie gave to Mitch that has a huge impact on me is that Mitch needs to reassess his life, value love over money, and happiness over success. I know that I do love my family and I prioritize them, but sometimes, money is something that I wish to have and that I think that I would be happy if I become rich and successful in life because it is my goal. I just realized that I don’t want to be like Mitch who became wealthy but he finds little time for his girlfriend Janine, whom he really loves. I don’t want to......

...Film Elements EAT PRAY LOVE AND SHANE After watching the first 5 minutes of Eat Pray Love and Shane I would be able to guess what Shane concern would be. I wouldn’t be able to guess about Eat Pray and Love only because it starts off one way and seems to venture into a different direction. In the movie Shane, its music suggests that the movie would have a combination of different emotional qualities. The beginning music starts off as happy and then it becomes serious and adventures. It then goes back to serious and happy. There is also a touch of sadness in one part of the movie. The movie Eat Pray Love the music starts of upbeat and happy and that continues for awhile. It then turns into being serious and somewhat happy at the same time. The characters that was introduced in the beginning of Eat Pray Love tells us that the theme of the movie is going to be based on them trying to figure out what they should do in life. It seems as though the main character Liz have issues with things that are going on in her life and starts to analyze her life on what the doctor told her at the beginning of the movie. The main characters husband and her publisher would be two characters that we will be viewed more in a distance. In the movie Shane there were four characters introduced in the beginning, Mr. & Mrs. Starks, their son Joey and Shane. There also were the Riders. I believe that Shane would be the main characters whose eyes we will view the movie through. The Starks are......

...Morgan Perry THEO 104-D30 April 9, 2015 Reflection Paper INTRODUCTION: My first reflection paper will address temptation and Demons. I do not have a lot of knowledge in these subjects but I want to challenge myself in places I am not familiar with. However, temptation and demons have relation with one another so that’s why I chose these topics. These classes at Liberty University have definitely opened my mind to what it is to be a Christian and appreciate the morals and values I hold. Temptation and Demons are spoken of in the Bible and all over the world. I am excited to further my learning in these topics. THEOLOGICAL DEFINITION: What is temptation? Temptation is what moves us to sin. It is important to know that God does not tempt us to sin (Jas 1:13) and temptation is not to be equated with sin. Christ was tempted (Matt. 4) yet he never sinned (Heb. 4:15). James 1:12-16 is the definition of temptation. Great blessings are given to those who are tempted and remain faithful and your own desires lead you into temptation (James 1:12-16). We must be able to get to a point to resist temptation. It is also important to realize temptation is not sin. Sin is not to blame when we sin (Napier, 1993, para. 12). BIBLICAL DEFINITION: According to the Bible there are two definitions of temptation. Temptation was demonstrated in the Bible when God “tempted” Abraham (Gen. 22:1). In this case temptation meant a trial or being put to the test. Temptation can also mean......

A Reflection on the Film Barber's Tales

...A Reflection on Barber’s Tales A movie set in the 70’s during the Marcos dictatorship, “Barber’s Tales” is truly one of the Filipino films that not just Filipinos, but other people as well, should see. Unlike most Filipino films that people know nowadays that comprise of love teams or special effects, this movie is able to capture the attention of its audiences through gaining knowledge of history and different issues that exist and are relevant to our society then and now. And Jun Robles Lana, director and writer of the film, is able to excellently do this with the addition of laughs and just the right amount of drama. The film depicts two kinds of struggles experienced by the Filipinos during the time of Marcos. One is a personal kind of struggle, and the other is social struggle. These were deliberately seen in the film, and were excellently paralleled, through two main factors: thirst for identity and freedom, and fear. The first factor was the thirst for identity and freedom. The film was able to successfully show the personal struggle that women went through with the use of its different characters. There was a prostitute, which everyone knows is someone seen as someone very low in the society. There was another who was a mother who was shown in the film who was almost always pregnant for she had a husband who always thirsted for sexual actions. In addition, one was a battered wife who, in spite of always getting hit by his husband, continues to hold on to......

Heneral Luna

...Heneral Luna: Reflection Paper Unlike most films about heroes, this one manages to tell a compelling story about the brilliant and fiery general. In this film, Antonio Luna is depicted as a real human being, full of virtues as well as faults. It stimulates a special kind of reflection we need in rethinking our own state of patriotism and sense of nationalism and nationhood. This film enables us to understand not just the life of Luna but also the historical context of his struggle and heroism. The Choleric Filipino General Antonio Luna as what I have perceived from the movie has this notoriety of being a “hot-headed” individual but he is beyond than that. I find Antonio Luna as powerful, passionate and resilient. He is fierce and is not afraid to go after what he wants. He has a very complex personality he is extremely powerful and capable but is also highly emotional. I would see him if he is in the right people that surrounds him as a very capable General and able to accomplish anything. But when he goes dark side (his demons) and out of balance he can become a terrible tyrant, equally capable of using power for destruction and manipulation. He is fearless in any conquest and will not back down to anyone. He doesn’t take no from anybody. On the outside I see him as tough, mysterious and unable to be broken. Deep down, he is quite fragile and complex. He has this deep wisdom but often comes with it are resentment and contempt for the common man. He only really respects......

We chose this topic because, as students, we found how different students study in different styles interesting. We wanted to dive into the more specific details of these students study habits and work ethics. From studying early in the morning to reading various text books late at night, we though this could probably be caused by how they were raised and the environment they grew up in, especially regarding their parents’ treatment toward these students. Initially, we got major information we could use for our research during class. It was found that children behaved and grow up depending on how they were treated at home, after all, most of our lives start at home. Children with authoritarian parents, which entail parents who are very strict and implement rules just because they are the parent, tend to be rebellious and aggressive. Children with authoritative parents, or parents who stand in the center of strict control and leniency, tend to be obedient, responsible...

Luna

...Heneral Luna ("General Luna") is a 2015 Filipino historical biopic film depicting General Antonio Luna's leadership of the Philippine Revolutionary Army during the Philippine-American War. It opens with the beginning of hostilities with the American colonizers, and ends with the assassination of Luna on June 5, 1899 - a period in which Luna served as Supreme Chief of the Army under the First Philippine Republic. Directed by Jerrold Tarog and produced by Artikulo Uno Productions, the film received critical acclaim from critics and audiences alike, praising its cinematography, writing, acting and plot. The film has been selected as the Philippine entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards. With a production budget of 80 million pesos, it is one of the most expensive Filipino epic historical films ever released. On September 29, 2015, it broke previous record of ₱160 million to become the highest grossing Filipino historical film of all time. Despite a 50% discount offered student viewers, by the beginning of its fourth week the film was well on its way to reaching the ₱200 million gross ticket sales it needs in order to break-even, after cinema screening costs. It has been said that a film is a characterization of diverse emotions and motions of a society (Santillan, 1998, 155, as cited in Navarro, 2008, 133). Although History and Film have their own characteristics and potencies as disciplines and fields of knowledge, there are times......

Heneral Luna Reaction Paper

...HENERAL LUNA REFLECTION PAPER  Summary of the movie The story took place during the Philippine-American War, focusing on the leadership of Heneral Luna to the Philippine Revolutionary Army. It revolved not only about the war against the Americans, but mainly on the conflict among Filipinos. The issue was about the presence of Americans and other Filipinos supporting the Americans’ ways such as Buencamino and Paterno. The idea of fellow Filipinos supporting Americans enraged Heneral Luna for he was very patriotic and strongly fought for the freedom of the Philippines. Though Luna was considered to be a great leader of the army, some were against his leadership for others envy or were threatened by his presence. He had conflicts with other fellow generals such Mascardo which lead to more hatred against Luna. Luna was assassinated at Aguinaldo’s headquarters. He was framed that the President called him, though upon his arrival he already left and Buencamino was the one in the office. During their argument, shots were fired outside so Luna went out to inspect. The brutal killing happened as Janolino appeared, captain of Kawit that he also had a fight with, killing him along with the other soldiers against Luna. He was shot and stabbed repeatedly to death. Other loyal soldiers to Luna were killed including the Bernal brothers. Heneral Luna was buried with full military honors as ordered by Aguinaldo by the same men who killed him. Heneral Antonio Luna’s killers were......

Reaction Paper on Heneral Luna

... "Heneral Luna" Reaction Paper I first watched the film "Heneral Luna" last summer vacation, my dad insists that we should watch this historical biopic movie beside the fact that we are interested about history, this movie became a trending topic on the internet and it was the philippine entry on "88th academy awards" for "Best Foreign Film". After watching the movie, I can say that this may be the best historical local film that I have ever watched. The movie was so great to the fact that I almost cry while watching how cruel happened, noted that I'm with my family watching. The movie got me and I can't clearly determine what my emotion is, there are parts of the film that I laugh , stunned , cry , and mad. The actors of the film really suits the character that was given to them, the character and acting itself was portrayed very well. I am impressed by the cinematography of the film , the way they show the fight scenes or war scenes. The flashback scene is as good as it is, it was cool to watch but it confused me on the first time I saw it, because there we're no effects that shows the audience that the scene was a flashback. The music of the movie was good and the music was made by the director itself. What captures me and what I like the most about the movie was the script itself. There were cussing lines on the film but they were creative and poetic, beside the fact that Antonio Luna was also a poet. His lines and dialogue......

Reflection Paper

...Reflection Paper The three topics that I would like to write about is Did Jesus claim to be God? , If a person is a Christian, does it matter how they live their life? and What can your local church do to better communicate God’s love to your community. I feel that these three topics are very important to me because since Jesus did claim to be God, why did he claim it because since God is the almighty, there must be something special about him because no one would really claim it unless they can prove it. Jesus did claim to be God and he did it in ways that really amazed people including myself when I was first reading the bible and knowing more about it. The other topic I am writing about is if a person is a Christian, does it matter how they live their life. It feels real interesting because if you do believe in God, you must follow all he said like in the Ten Commandments which he laid out. It’s a true test to see if you are a Christian and are you willing to do anything if the Lord told you so, it really tests a person’s faith. The final topic I am writing about is what can your local church do to better communicate God’s love to your community. It is also very interesting because in every area there is a local church and they would love for everyone to believe in God and follow him because he did die for our sins. So it’s very good to spread the word out to your community and show that he is God and how he loves each and every......
