1. The sum of three consecutive even integers is equal to 84. Find the numbers. Solution * The difference between two even integers is equal to 2. let x, x + 2 and x + 4 be the three numbers. Their sum is equal to 84, hence x + (x + 2) + (x + 4) = 84 * Solve for x and find the three numbers x = 26 , x + 2 = 28 and x + 4 = 30 * The three numbers are even. Check that their sum is equal to 84. 2. The sum on an odd integer and twice its consecutive is equal to equal to 3757. Find the number.

Solution * The difference between two odd integers is equal to 2. let x be an odd integer and x + 2 be its consecutive. The sum of x and twice its consecutive is equal to 3757 gives an equation of the form x + 2(x + 2) = 3757 * Solve for x x = 1251 * Check that the sum of 1251 and 2(1251 + 2) is equal to 3757.

3. The sum of the first and third of three consecutive odd integers is 131 less than three times the second integer. Find the three integers. Solution * Let x, x + 2 and x + 4 be three integers. The sum of the first x and third x + 4 is given by x + (x + 4) * 131 less than three times the second 3(x + 2) is given by
3(x + 2) - 131 * "The sum of the first and third is 131 less than three times the second" gives x + (x + 4) = 3(x + 2) - 131 * Solve for x and find all three numbers x = 129 , x + 2 = 131 , x + 4 = 133 * As an exercise, check that the sum of the first and third is 131 less than three times

4. The product of two consecutive odd integers is equal to 675. Find the two integers.

Solution * Let x, x + 2 be the two integers. Their product is equak to 144 x (x + 2) = 675 * Expand to obtain a quadratic equation. x 2 + 2 x - 675 = 0 * Solve for x to obtain two solutions x = 25 or x = -27

if x = 25 then x + 2 = 27

if x = -27 then x + 2 = -25 * We have two solutions. The two numbers are either
25 and 27 * or
-27 and -25 * Check that in both cases the product is equal to 675. 5. Find four consecutive even integers so that the sum of the first two added to twice the sum of the last two is equal to 742.

Solution * Let x, x + 2, x + 4 and x + 6 be the four integers. The sum of the first two x + (x + 2) * twice the sum of the last two is written as 2 ((x + 4) + (x + 6)) = 4 x + 20 * sum of the first two added to twice the sum of the last two is equal to 742 is written as x + (x + 2) + 4 x + 20 = 742 * Solve for x and find all four numbers x = 120 , x + 2 = 122 , x + 4 = 124 , x + 6 = 126 * As an exrcise, check that the sum of the first two added to twice the sum of the last two is equal to 742

6. When the smallest of three consecutive odd integers is added to four times the largest, it produces a result 729 more than four times the middle integer. Find the numbers and check your answer.

Solution * Let x, x + 2 and x + 4 be the three integers. "The smallest added to four times the largest is written as follows" x + 4 (x + 4) * "729 more than four times the middle integer" is written as follows 729 + 4 (x + 2) * "When the smallest is added to four times the largest, it produces a result 729 more than four times the middle" is written as follows x + 4 (x + 4) = 729 + 4 (x + 2) * Solve for x and find all three numbers x + 4 x + 16 = 729 + 4 x + 8

x = 721

x + 2 = 723

x + 4 = 725 * Check: the smallest is added to four times the largest 721 + 4 * 725 = 3621 * four times the middle 4 * 723 = 2892 * 3621 is more than 2892 by 3621 - 2892 = 729 * The answer to the problem is correct.

7. Two cars started from the same point, at 5 am, traveling in opposite directions at 40 and 50 mph respectively. At what time will they be 450 miles apart?

Solution * After t hours the distances D1 and D2, in miles per hour, traveled by the two cars are given by D1 = 40 t and D2 = 50 t * After t hours the distance D separating the two cars is given by D = D1 + D2 = 40 t + 50 t = 90 t

* Distance D will be equal to 450 miles when D = 90 t = 450 miles

* To find the time t for D to be 450 miles, solve the above equation for t to obtain t = 5 hours. 5 am + 5 hours = 10 am

8. At 9 am a car (A) began a journey from a point, traveling at 40 mph. At 10 am another car (B) started traveling from the same point at 60 mph in the same direction as car (A). At what time will car B pass car A?

Solution * After t hours the distances D1 traveled by car A is given by D1 = 40 t * Car B starts at 10 am and will therefore have spent one hour less than car A when it passes it. After (t - 1) hours, distance D2 traveled by car B is given by D2 = 60 (t-1)

* When car B passes car A, they are at the same distance from the starting point and therefore D1 = D2 which gives 40 t = 60 (t-1) * Solve the above equation for t to find t = 3 hours

* Car B passes car A at 9 + 3 = 12 pm

9. Two trains, traveling towards each other, left from two stations that are 900 miles apart, at 4 pm. If the rate of the first train is 72 mph and the rate of the second train is 78 mph, at whatt time will they pass each other?

Solution * After t hours, the two trains will have travelled distances D1 and D2 (in miles) given by
D1 = 72 t and D2 = 78 t * After t hours total distance D travelled by the two trains is given by
D = D1 + D2 = 72 t + 78 t = 150 t * When distance D is equal to 900 miles, the two trains pass each other.
150 t = 900 * Solve the above equation for t t = 6 hours. 10. Linda left home and drove for 2 hours. She stopped for lunch then drove for another 3 hours at a rate that is 10 mph higher than the rate before she had lunch. If the total distance Linda traveled is 230 miles, what was the rate before lunch?
Solution
* If x is the rate at which Linda drove before lunch the rate after lunch is equal x + 10. The total distance D traveled by Linda is given by
D = 2 x + 3(x + 10) * and is equal to 230 miles. Hence
2 x + 3 (x + 10) = 230 * Solve for x to obtain x = 40 miles / hour.

11. By Car, John traveled from city A to city B in 3 hours. At a rate that was 20 mph higher than John's, Peter traveled the same distance in 2 hours. Find the distance between the two cities
Solution
* Let x be John's rate in traveling between the two cities. The rate of Peter will be x + 10. We use the rate-time-distance formula to write the distance D traveled by John and Peter (same distance D)
D = 3 x and D = 2(x + 20)

* The first equation can be solved for x to give x = D / 3 * Substitute x by D / 3 into the second equation
D = 2(D/3 +20) * Solve for D to obtain D = 120 miles 12. A man has a daughter and a son. The son is three years older than the daughter. In one year the man will be six time as old as the daughter is now. In ten years the man will be fourteen years older than the combined ages of his children at that time. What is the man's present age?

Solution:
Let x the daughter's present age.
Then the son's present age is x+3.
Since in one year the man will be six times as old as the daughter is now, the man's present age is 6x-1.
In ten years the man's age will be 6x-1+10, while the daughter's age will be x+10 and the son's age will be x+3+10=x+13.
Since in ten years the man will be fourteen years older than the combined ages of his children at that time. 6x-1+10-14=x+10+(x+13)
Solve this equation by simplifying it step by step:
6x-5=2x+23
6x-2x=23+5
4x=28
x=7
Therefore, the daughter's present age is 7 years.
Hence, the son's present age is 7+3=10 years, and the man's present age is 6(7)-1=41
At present, the man is 41 years old.

13. Alfred is four times as old as his nephew Franco. 5 years ago, the sum of their ages is equal to the present age of Alfred. How old is each?

Solution:
Let
A = present age of Alfred
F = present age of Franco
A−5 = age of Alfred 5 years ago
F−5 = age of Franco 5 years ago
Sum of their ages 5 years ago
(A−5)+ (F−5) =A
F=10 yrs old answer
Alfred is four times as old as Franco
A=4(10)
A=40 yrs old answer

14. How many liters of 20% alcohol solution should be added to 40 liters of a 50% alcohol solution to make a 30% solution?

Solution:
Let x = 20% alcohol solution y = 30% solution x + 40 = y 20%x+50%40=30%(y) * Substitute y by x + 40 in the last equation to obtain. 20%x+50%40=30%(x+40) * Change percentages into fractions. 20x+5040=30x+30(40)100 * Multiply all terms by 100 to simplify. 20x+5040=30x+30(40) * Solve for x. x=80 liters
Therefore, 80 liters of 20% alcohol is be added to 40 liters of a 50% alcohol solution to make a 30% solution.

15. John wants to make a 100 ml of 5% alcohol solution mixing a quantity of a 2% alcohol solution with a 7% alcohol solution. What are the quantities of each of the two solutions (2% and 7%) he has to use?

Solution:
Let x and y be the quantities of the 2% and 7% alcohol solutions to be used to make 100 ml. Hence x + y = 100 2%x+7%y=5%(100) * The first equation gives y = 100 - x. Substitute in the last equation to obtain 2%x+7%(100-x)=5%(100) * Multiply by 100 and simplify 2x+700-7x=5(100) * Solve for x x=40 ml * Substitute x by 40 in the first equation to find y y=100-x=60 ml

16. Two cars started at the same time, from the same point, driving along the same road. The rate of the first car is 50 mph and the rate of the second car is 60 mph. How long will it take for the distance between the two cars to be 30 miles?

Solution * Let D1 and D2 be the distances travelled by the two cars in t hours
D1 = 50 t and D2 = 60 t * The second has a higher speed and therefore the distance d between the two cars is given by d = 60 t - 50 t = 10 t * For d to be 30 miles, we need to have
30 miles = 10 t * Solve the above equation for t to obtain t = 3 hours. 17. John left home and drove at the rate of 45 mph for 2 hours. He stopped for lunch then drove for another 3 hours at the rate of 55 mph to reach his destination. How many miles did John drive?

Solution * The total distance D travelled by John is given by
D = 45 * 2 + 3 * 55 = 255 miles.

18. It takes 1.5 hours for Tim to mow the lawn. Linda can mow the same lawn in 2 hours. How long will it take John and Linda, work together, to mow the lawn?

Solution: * We first calculate the rate of work of John and Linda
John: 1 / 1.5 and Linda 1 / 2 * Let t be the time for John and Linda to mow the Lawn. The work done by John alone is given by t * (1 / 1.5) * The work done by Linda alone is given by t * (1 / 2) * When the two work together, their work will be added. Hence t * (1 / 1.5) + t * (1 / 2) = 1 * Multiply all terms by 6 6(t * (1 / 1.5) + t * (1 / 2) ) = 6 * Solve for t t = 6 / 7 hours = 51.5 minutes.

19. It takes 6 hours for pump A, used alone, to fill a tank of water. Pump B used alone takes 8 hours to fill the same tank. We want to use three pumps: A, B and another pump C to fill the tank in 2 hours. What should be the rate of pump C? How long would it take pump C, used alone, to fill the tank?

Solution * The rates of pumps A and B can be calculated as follows: A: 1 / 6 and B: 1 / 8 * Let R be the rate of pump C. When working together for 2 hours, we have
2 (1 / 6 + 1 / 8 + R) = 1 * Solve for R R = 1 / 4.8, rate of pump C. * Let t be the time it takes pump C, used alone, to fill the tank. Hence t * (1 / 4.8) = 1 * Solve for t t = 4.8 hours, the time it takes pump C to fill the tank.

20. A tank can be filled by pipe A in 5 hours and by pipe B in 8 hours, each pump working on its own. When the tank is full and a drainage hole is open, the water is drained in 20 hours. If initially the tank was empty and someone started the two pumps together but left the drainage hole open, how long does it take for the tank to be filled?

Solution * Let's first find the rates of the pumps and the drainage hole pump
A: 1 / 5 , pump B: 1 / 8 , drainage hole: 1 / 20 * Let t be the time for the pumps to fill the tank. The pumps ,add water into the tank however the drainage hole drains water out of the tank, hence t ( 1 / 5 + 1 / 8 - 1 / 20) = 1 * Solve for t t = 3.6 hours.

21. A swimming pool can be filled by pipe A in 3 hours and by pipe B in 6 hours, each pump working on its own. At 9 am pump A is started. At what time will the swimming pool be filled if pump B is started at 10 am?
Solution
* the rates of the two pumps are pump A: 1 / 3 , pump B: 1 / 6 * Working together, If pump A works for t hours then pump B works t - 1 hours since it started 1 hour late. Hence t * (1 / 3) + (t - 1) * (1 / 6) = 1 * Solve for t t = 7 / 3 hours = 2.3 hours = 2 hours 20 minutes. * The swimming pool will be filled at
9 + 2:20 = 11:20

...experience of learning from reflection on giving intramuscular (IM) injections, using Gibbs's (1988) reflective model. I demonstrate how practice anxiety, as a student nurse, can be dealt with through effective mentoring. I chose the seminal theory of Gibbs reflection on practice, as it illustrates six significant stages; description, feelings, evaluation, analysis of the incident, conclusion and an action plan Ghaye and Lillyman (1997). Gibbs cycle is used throughout the process of reflecting on the incident to help me make sense of my practice and understand what l could do differently to enhance good practice. I use my experience from a placement simulation as I could not be on actual placement due to unforeseen circumstances. Reflection is a process through which healthcare practitioners and students can learn from experience and use the knowledge to inform and improve practice Schon, (1983). The ability to reflect on one's actions is particularly imperative in clinical practice and discourse. As Jarvis (1992) asserted, there is no consensus on the definition of reflection as it is a broad concept. Reid (1993, p305.) define reflection as; “a course of action reviewing an occurrence of practice to describe, analyse, evaluate and so inform learning about practice” Schon (1983) identified two types of reflection which are; reflection in action, which takes place during the event where the practitioner may not be aware that it is happening and reflection on action, which takes place...

...and its impact on me and other colleagues. Using Gibbs (1988) Reflective Cycle I will identify the situation in which the issue arose, the thoughts and feelings it evoked, an evaluation of positive and negative aspects experienced. I will analyse the situation in order to reach a conclusion and to formulate an action plan. To preserve patient and staff confidentiality no one will be named. I believe Gibbs model of reflection to be a framework with which I can address an issue from the workplace as I find it easy to utilise and believe it supports my reflective learning style as a pragmatist. Cottrell (2008). This approach to learning advocates Ryle (1949) where thoughts and feelings impact directly on the way we behave. This way of thinking suits me personally as I trained as a Cognitive Behavioural Counsellor and believe I take a rational and cognitive approach to problems. Neenan and Dryden (2004). Consequently I believe it to be a model or framework with which I can use as I develop as an Assistant Practitioner. The incident I am using for reflection for this essay involves an 87 year old lady that had suffered a pre-tibia laceration and attended the minor injuries department of Accident and Emergency. Following examination by a Nurse Practitioner I was asked to treat the injury. I cleaned the wound aseptically removing the developing Haematoma from under the skin flap and occluded using steri-strips. A Mepitel non- adhesive dressing was then applied. I secured the...

...boundaries and leads to better communication and therefore a better outcome for the patient. (Pullen & Mathias, 2010) Being able to reflect upon situations is vital in the role of the nurse. Being able to examine personal thoughts and perceptions enables the nurse to have greater self awareness and build upon strengths and develop personal and professional competencies. (Somerville, D. et al 2004) Reflection has been described as being able to think about a situation, make sense of it and ultimately learn from it. (Clarke and Graham 1996) Taking a period of time to reflect and review a situation allows a person to move on and through the learning experience, become a better practitioner (Bulman et al 2012) By being able to reflect and ask myself what would I do differently or could my practice have been better will only help to develop my skills and knowledge and influence my future as a practitioner in a positive way. Having looked at several reflective models of learning, such as Gibbs (1988), Driscoll (2000) and Dewey, I have decided to use the Kolb (1984) model of reflection throughout this assignment. Kolb's (1984) experiential theory of learning has four distinct stages of a cycle. This incorporates an actual learning experience; being involved in a situation, then observing someone one else in that situation, reflecting upon...

Reflection

...1 Reflection Reflection is an everyday process. We reflect on a range of everyday problems and situations all the time: What went well? What didn’t? Why? How do I feel about it? We don’t usually follow a formula for this, it just happens as feelings, thoughts and emotions about something gradually ‘surface’. We might choose to do something differently, or not, as a result of reflecting, but reflection is essentially a kind of loose processing of thoughts and feelings about an incident, a meeting, a day – any event or experience at all. Reflection can be a more structured way of processing in order to deal with a problem. This type of reflection may take place when we have had time to stand back from something, or talk it through, as in: ‘On reflection, I think you might be right’, or ‘On second thoughts, I realised he was more upset than me.’ Structured reflection If we consciously reflect, maybe as part of our work or family role, there tends to be a rough process of ‘How did it go? What went well? Why? What didn’t? Why? What next?’ Examples might be of a football coach reflecting after a match, a teacher reflecting on a lesson, or simply a parent thinking about how best to deal with a teenager. In this kind of reflection, the aim is to look carefully at what happened, sort out what is really going on and explore in depth, in order to improve, or change something for next time. This brief guide will look at what is meant by reflection, suggest forms of structured...

...of communication amongst the health care professionals and how a good nursing documentation is an integral part of nursing. It will also demonstrate how reflection enabled me to make sense of and learn from this experience, as well as identify any further learning developments needed to improve my practice and achieve the level of competency needed for when I qualify as an assistant practitioner. While discussing the knowledge underpinning practice, evidence based literature will be reviewed to support my discussion and for the purpose of reflection the essay will be written in the first person. Spouse, J, et al (2008). Jonhs, C (2009) defined reflection as learning through our every day experiences, towards realising one’s vision of desirable practice as a lived reality. He also added that it is a critical and a flexible process of self inquiry and transformation of being and becoming the practitioner you desire to be. However, Ghaye, T et al. (2000) stated that for the health care professionals to develop a more reflective posture, they must fully embrace both the principles and the practices of reflection. It is about becoming more aware of how we learn and how this affects what we think, feel and do. There are different models for reflection; some are more complex and detailed than others. To help me with my reflection, I have chosen Gibbs (1988) reflective cycle as a guide: The names of the patient, staff members and health care setting will be changed to protect...

...Date: 27th October, 2014 Title: Morrisons breaks pledge on low prices Link: http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/business/Retail_and_leisure/article1475669.ece The ethical issue was related to credibility of a company. It was about Morrisons the supermarket increased prices of some products marked with “I’m cheaper” sign after promising to cut prices permanently on over 1000 goods six months ago. The supermarket claimed the rise in prices was only a reflection of “commodity inflation” and still “lower than they would have been” without the “I’m Cheaper”cuts. No doubt by increasing the price of goods, the supermarket could compensate the losses from the inflation in supply costs. This do help to maintain profitability of the supermarket and strengthen the confidence of its investors. Also, even though the prices had been raised, they were still lower than the general prices of these goods. The promise of enduring price cut was kept. It was a win-win situation in the eyes of Morrisons. One of the problems arose in this issue was the reputation of Morrisons towards the customers was deeply affected. Although action of increasing the prices due to inflation was justifiable, Morrisons still broke part of its vow of long-lasting price cut. A credibility gap between Morrisons and customers might have been develop as a result. Moreover, the intention of the supermarket was to maintain its profitability while the issue of the news had leaded to a fall in its share price of 0.46...

Reflection and Refraction

...Refraction and Reflection People often wonder why it is that when looking at fish in an aquarium, the fish seems to suddenly change to a different position as we look at them from different viewpoints. What makes Diamonds seem to sparkle so much, or even when a straw is inserted into a glass it looks tilted or at an angle. All of these questions has the same answer and are all examples of Refraction, Refraction is the change in direction of light as it changes speeds passing from one material into another, it slows down when light enters a denser material, and is also the key component in fiber-optic transmissions. Although reflection and refraction are often construed as one in the same they are however different. Reflection tends to occur when light bounces off of an object. But the amount of reflection often depends on how even the surface is. Meaning if a surface is smooth or even flat (specular) it will bounce off at equal angles; like when you look in the mirror at the reflection of yourself, or in a clam body of water. Or perhaps if the surface is rough (diffuse) the light will however scatter into different directions, like off of clothing or paper. Or for instance this is why the “setting sun” my have a reddish tint and why the sky is blue. Degradation could be defined as the ratio of optical output power to the input power in the fiber of length. Some factors that can cause degradation of signal strength in fiber-optic transmission are absorption (intrinsic...

Personal Reflection

...Personal reflections are characterized as learning through experience in gaining new insights and changed perception of self and practices. Reflection can be a difficult experience without the support and guidance of an expert (Johns, 2004). This personal reflection presents an exciting opportunity for me to consider how successful my placement in the intermediate care has been in terms of my own personal learning. By reflecting on the positive aspects of the placement, I will be able to make sense of my personal learning and apply what I have learnt into future careers. At the beginning of my placement I knew very little about intermediate care or services it provided regarding alternatives to hospital care for elderly patients. In preparation for my placement, I visited a local health center and spoke to a therapist who agreed to send me information about intermediate care service. I familiarized myself with the services that are offered by intermediate care, for instance in house provisions and therapist group run services. This helped to alleviate some of my anxiety about the placement that I experienced during my first week, reflecting on my experiences has helped. During my placement I was allocated a mentor who was a knowledgeable and professional nurse. I learnt so much from my mentor, especially what it takes to be a crucial member of a rapid response team of the intermediate care service. Shadowing the mentor gave me the opportunity to observe all the rapid...

The piece of work that is going to be discussed is The Welcoming Table by Alice Walker. This piece of literature captured my interest to a personal level. The piece of literature kind of hits home with what I see and how I feel that the woman that was presented in the literature was treated by the other people. The key terms that are going to be use to describe this literature piece will be tone, symbol, and figurative language. The main reason that this literature work captured my interest is because I can place myself in her shoes. I have been in positions and also have been in places that people did not want me there, or that I did not feel welcome in their circle. There was one incident that I remember; I was trying to find a church that could feel comfortable going to, some place that I can look for answers if I had questions. I believe that is what the little old woman was doing in the literature work in The Welcoming Table. It seems like the woman wanted to do was pray and be able to speak to Jesus in his own house. The people of the church did not want her to be there because she was not wearing the right clothes, and she was not like them, that is what I got from the reading. The people that were in the church were not happy...

Cm107 Reflection

...Unit 9 Reflection Christy Gatlin CM107 Unit 9 Reflections For this assignment I have been instructed to reflect back to the unit two assignment and unit three journal entry. In the unit two assignment we were asked to discuss our goals for college composition 1. Looking back at the goals I set for myself I do believe that I have achieved my goals. My goals were to learn how to correctly write an introductory paragraph and a conclusion paragraph. This course has helped me reach those goals. Strategies I used to achieve those goals was doing research, using the reading material given to us through the Kaplan Library and studying. Without the reading material and the professor being so helpful I don’t think I could have achieved the goals I had set for myself. I am most proud of myself for learning how to write a thesis statement and why it is important. I never really knew how to start a paper correctly. Having an effective thesis in your introductory paragraph is very important. It can make your break paper. The thesis is a statement that tells what your paper is about and why. The project I just completed has taught me a lot. It has taught me to be more comfortable with my own writing skills. It has also taught me that I still need to work on citation and giving proper credit where it is due. I understand why we do citations but I just still need to work on it. I will have to use this in other classes for papers. I think now is a time to set another goal for myself...

Reflection on Mentorship Practice

...Examples of Reflective Writing Example 1 I arrived on the ward at 7:30 ready to begin a 12-hour shift. After receiving handover, my mentor assigned me the job of bathing Mr B with the help of a healthcare assistant. Mr B has Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a progressive disease of the nervous system with rapid deterioration due to spongiform encephalopathy. He is not expected to live to Christmas, even though he is only 19 years old. He is mentally aware of what is going on but is physically unable to demonstrate activities of daily living, including eating and drinking, has limited communication skills and is doubly incontinent. He is unsafe on his feet so mobilises with a wheelchair. I approached Mr B’s bed and asked his consent to take him for a bath. While the bath was running we began helping him to undress. He looked rather nervous. At the thought of myself being in his position, being the same age as him, I began to feel embarrassed too. I thought that I could not possibly be a professional individual if I let my embarrassment and sympathy get in the way of my nursing care. We assisted Mr B into the bath and started his wash. I knew he was uncomfortable and wanted to be able to wash himself, but was unable to do so. I was finding it difficult to look him in the eye, especially when it came to washing his genitalia. I tried to ease this by making conversation, but in a way this made matters worse. After the bath we dried Mr B, dressed him and returned him...
