Reflections on Getting Tings Done

Getting Things Done-How to make a team work was written by Maurice Hardaker and Bryan K. Ward. The author introduces a technique to get a team to achieve its mission, which is called PQM or Process Quality Management. The PQM session is a two-day meeting of relevant managers to define goals, assume responsibilities and determine actions. The session includes the following steps:

(1) The fist step in PQM is to develop a clear understanding of the team’s mission, what its members collectively are paid to do. It is important that the mission statement must be explicit and expressed in short.

(2)The second step is to define the subgoals for the mission, which are called the Critical Success Factors or CSFs. Consensus on these aims is vital. In listing the CSFs of the mission, a team should be guided by a necessary-sufficient rule. That is, the CSFs should be necessary and sufficient to accomplish its mission. The list should be a mix of tactical and strategic factor. The maximum number CSFs is eight.

(3) The third step is to identify and list what has to be done so that a team can meet its critical success factors. The author recommends an effective approach to list the business processes sufficient to accomplish the goals and assign one owner to hold responsible for each business process. A grid is used to list the CSFs and business processes. Graphing makes priorities clear.

(4) The PQM process is never-ending journey that needs follow-through throughout the organization and. A company should revisit it’s CSF list periodically to adapt to changes.

I agree with the author’s ideas. A team, no matter a management team for a company or for a specific project, must have a clear and consensus mission to achieve. This is the purpose to gather or build a team. Every member in the team should clearly understand the task ahead,

The views of 131 public sector employees working at different tiers were collected to identify the impact of work life balance on employee’s performance in public sector organizations of Pakistan. Non-probability convenience sampling technique was used for drawing samples from population. Descriptive statistics, correlation and regression analysis were used to analyze the data. This study indicates that a statistically significant positive relationship exist between each of identified dimension of work life balance as each of the dimension if catered for, help in enhancing the performance of the employees in PSOs. Importance of employee’s wellbeing and care for family demands as key dimension of work life balance is also emphasized by this study.
