Will receiving a college degree improve your career opportunities?

The statement makes the assumption that having a college degree will give me a better chance at having a successful career than if I did not have a degree. It implies that those with a degree have better career opportunities. It does not state what kind of degree or what kind of career opportunity. It does not specify if I am to work in my chosen field. Many people earn degrees and never put them to use. In this case, earning a degree would be of no benefit. There are people with very successful careers and do not have degrees. There are also people who do have degrees who are living in homeless shelters. That being said, there are more opportunities for people who have obtained a college degree. The earning potential is greater for those with a degree. The chance for advancement within the company is there for someone who does not have to go back to school to acquire credentials for a new position. This group also enjoys greater job stability. Unskilled labor is usually the first to be terminated when cutbacks occur. The unemployment rate tends to be higher for those with only a high school education. On the whole, receiving a college degree can improve career opportunities but is not a guarantee and is not the only way to improve one’s chance at having a successful career.
Applying logic and evaluating methods of critical thinking to the above question allowed me to arrive at a total different perspective. It was my belief a college education was the only way to a successful life. Critical thinking determine for me if the principles support the end then you are on the right track. Question the statement until the true facts are clear.
