REMEMBER IN AUTUMN

Once upon a time I was watching leaves fall off trees looking to fly away. A cold wind blew by making the leaves dance. It was cold so I went inside were I made some hot chocolate. I heard a screech of tires outside I went outside to see whats there. A girl and her son were sitting on the curb looking lost. I asked why they were here the girl said “we needed to go to the hospital to get my son here checked out.” I felt bad for her so I let them inside for a little while. She told me her name was Amanda and her son’s name is Will. Will had leukemia. He had dark brown hair that was half way gone and giant sparkly blue eyes. I told Amanda that my mom was coming home soon so they could get a ride with them. Amanda called a tow truck while i played with Will. Will was strong. Stronger than anyone i ever knew. My mom finally got home and drove them to the hospital. About 4 months later i found out that Will got surgery and is at the hospital. Amanda called saying i could see Will. I left at about 3 in the morning to see him. When i got there i saw those sparkly blue eyes watching me. He told me about the kids who played with him and how all the nurses would compliment him on his hair. I was surprised at how happy he was. About a hour later he was discharged from the hospital so i asked if he could go to the park with me. We headed for the park and we played for what seemed like forever when we had to leave. He slept over that night and we jammed out to music. We had the speaker full blast you could feel the beat bouncing around. Amanda told me how they were moving and they had to leave today. I said goodbye to Will and watched as they headed down the street and turned the corner. I never forgot Will and Amanda, but i do pray at night hoping that Will is healthy and Amanda is alright. I might have not known them at first, but they are like

Art vs. Entertainment

...that being poor does not direct you to unhappiness but give you hope to move forward. It is not extravagant like big blockbuster movies but it moves you because it is pure, showing people’s pain and worries yet sending a message of hopes and we should never give up because of our misfortune. It was memorable because I could relate it to myself. Yet entertainment is more focused on how entertaining and how amusing it is. Let’s face it – we watch TV shows or movies when we are bored because they are entertaining. They are fun to fill our free time. Do they have any valuable messages or something we could remember for the rest of our life? Probably not. I’m not saying they are bad, but that quality of value is one big difference between Art and entertainment. I watched “The Children of Heaven (1997)” over 10 years ago but the scenes are still vivid because it was impressive. Do I remember what happened on 3rd cycle of America’s...

A Pretty How Town

...“anyone lived in a pretty how town” as a “preschool song” due to the “playful rhythm and sound” that resembles “life on a proverbial fast-paced playground” (231). Cummings illustrates the cycle of life to show the reader the passage of time. The passage of time is made evident by the repetition and syntax of “spring summer autumn winter” and illusions to other seasons throughout the poem (Cummings, line 3). The first stanza shows the seasons in order starting on the first full season of the year “spring” followed by “summer autumn winter” (Cummings, 3). The line of seasons become “an ‘incremental’ refrain, because it is slightly changed each time it appears” (Turco). The refrain appears in lines 3,11, and 32; each occurrence brings about the passage of time due to the order in which the seasons appear. The poem...

Tears Idle Tears

...intricate thoughts of one so near to that final breathe. The poem begins with the speaker describing his tears as “idle” and being groundless. Tennyson is not saying that the tears are unmoving or that they are without cause. The speaker may not necessarily be able to admit to the exact reasoning behind the tears, but he knows what causes them to surface, “some divine despair”. Yet despair is not divine; divine means heavenly or celestial. Tennyson means that the focus is on something from above. However, the irony can truly be seen in the physical cause of the tears, “In looking on the happy-autumn fields.” The word autumn implies harvest, almost winter, which signifies an end to something light, warm, fulfilling, and successful and the beginning of something much darker, colder, emptier, and lonelier. But the contradiction is actually found in the adjective “happy.” It is “the happy autumn-fields” that bring the tears. This suggests that while looking back may be sad; the speaker is still content, peaceful, satisfied. The next three stanzas then proceed to elaborate on “the days...

Creative Writing: Things Fall Apart

...whenever I found a perfect apple. I would hide the two best ones up there in the sky and pass the rest down to her. Later, when Papa and the older boys were out in the field and Mama was doing the wash, she would climb up to meet me. We would sit against the rough bark of the tree, our legs straddling the branches, and steal our pieces of heaven. The apples were as sweet as ambrosia and crisp like the autumn air. We would whisper quietly about our dreams of leaving the farm behind and stepping out into the world. Her eyes would grow as round as the apples we ate as I told her of all the fantastic things that were waiting for us....

What

...“anyone lived in a little how town” ee cummings • non-conformity • form = function o Poe’s unity of effect o poem = unique, does not conform to any poetic standards, grammatical rules, expectations • songs: o Justice & Independence, Jack & Diane (JC Mellencamp) o The Dance, The River (Garth Brooks) E. E. Cummings' "anyone lived in a pretty how town" tells the story of anyone. The name has a double meaning; anyone could be anyone in the dictionary definition sense, and could be seen as a singular entity, reinforcing the theme of isolation the independent individual has from the rest of society. The events all occur in a "pretty how town". "Pretty" connotes a mere façade, describing the superficiality of the town's inhabitants. "How", an adverb, is used as an adjective here. It could be describing the extent of the town's prettiness, but a better reason is that it describes the routine humdrum of the town's activities, since "how" also means "in a method or manner". The juxtapositions continue into the next line, "(with up so floating many bells down)". The rhythm of the line and the vowels emulate both the motion and the sounds of bells. This line occurs again later in the poem, and its function here is the same as it is there - to signify the passing of time. The next line is an ordered list of the seasons, also symbolizing the passing of time, describing anyone's activities as occurring continuously. The activities...

R. D. Bukater

...Bukater I remember the time I set sailed on the SSR Titanic. Remembering the famous, huge ship brought back memories of a young lady who had determination to save someone. She touched my life, and I still remember them always. The young woman’s name was Rose Dewitt Bukater. She and I were the same age. We were 17 and going on a voyage. She told me a lot about herself. Her father died, and that left rose and her mother (Ruth) with nothing. Her sad story was similar to mine. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1895. She was first class, along with her fiancé Caledon Hockley, and mother Ruth Dewitt Bukater. She and I became close on the Titanic voyage. She told me all about her fiancé she really never loved. Rose never seemed happy when he came around. At times she told me her life was nothing more than marrying a guy she doesn’t even love. I tried giving her advice. She found Jack at a time she was about to give up all hope. They quickly fell in love and became a couple. The time the ship was sinking, she would not leave Jack’s side. I tried urging her to come along, but she did not want to go unless Jack was with her. Those words touched me that I stayed and helped her get Jack to safety. Sadly, he died and she lived to be 101. She died in 1997. What I will remember most about Rose is she was determined and had a kind heart. One of Rose’s greatest accomplishments, I think, was finally being happy, loving, and really wanting to marry Jack. I will always remember the person...

Quirky Chic

...In Vogue Quirky Chic We’ve been enticed by the vintage craze. Lucy Thomas seeks the exquisite allure of tartan. If the carcases scattered through fashion history tell us anything, it’s that for every seasonal yin, there’s a yang nipping Jack Russell at its heels. Catwalk confidence has been mounting, and fashionable tweed collections are walking alongside the tartan ones. And so, for autumn, we have an arc of vintage styles, some enough to make even the most enthusiastic Hawaiian shirt or Warhol pop-art print look shy and retiring. I had the privilege this season of deciding which styles would be a total knock out and those of a fashion faux pas. Besides tartan, I found the ultimate alternative look this season. Perching along fashion’s front row, peering among the silk dresses and the sinister furs, Vivienne Westwood struck me the most with her distinctive styles; some so distracting and embellished, they completed the entire show. The admirable retro appearance re-born back from the 80’s when the fashion influences were, Dynasty and Dallas, big hair, gold, glamour, glitz and shoulder pads. As the models strutted their way past the audience, I found the styles seemingly sensuous but in fact artfully constructed skirts and dresses that hung beautifully from the coat-hanger figures; Grecian dresses complimented smeared red lipstick with heavy black eye shadow, it felt like one had gone back to their teen days and stumbled upon a massive rave. Deprived of the modern...

Chinese Mythology

...Chang-e’s Ascent to the Moon Chang-e is the lunar goddess in Chinese traditional myths. In China, she is a widely known character. She is known as a very beautiful woman who is living alone in a palace in the moon called “Guanghan Palace”. Her story is one of the most famous tragedies in Chinese myths. Recently there are several “retold” versions of the story of Chang-e’s ascent to the moon in different media. In 2010, there was a teleplay named “Chang-e” that told about the love story of Chang-e, Houyi, Wugang and Jade Rabbit. In the retold story, the relationship of these four persons is very complicated at the beginning. Later on, Houyi falls in love with Chang-e and Wugang is in love to Jade Rabbit. They try to start their new lives happily. However, a great flood troubles people, and it can be only resolved by Chang-e. The Jade Emperor gives 2 pills to Houyi and Chang-e but one of the 2 pills is destroyed and exchanged a fake one by a scoundrel. Houyi eats the fake pill when he knows this since he wants Chang-e to float to the moon and control the tides, so that she can stop the disaster. At the end, Chang-e floats to the moon alone. Jade Rabbit sympathizes with Chang-e so she also floats to the moon to accompany her. The 2 couples are both separated. There are several versions of the ancient myth about Chang-e. But the most famous one is from the book “huainanzi”. Chang-e is Houyi’s wife. Houyi gets elixir from Xiwangmu (the Western Queen Mother), and give...

Jewish Holy Days

...Jewish Holy Days Danielle K. Whitaker REL/134 September 11, 2012 Roy Rehberg Jewish Holy Days Every religion has holidays or moments in time that they find sacred. These sacred days are at special times each year; the main idea is to remember what made the day what it is. In this paper will we review when the holiday is celebrated, how the religion came about historically and how the religion is practiced. Sukkot is the holiday chosen for to take a closer look, one will see how it is practiced depending the various branches of Judaism (Rich, 2011). Sukkot is one of the last three pilgrimage festivals and is significant in multiple ways: historically and agriculturally. The festival begins on the fifth after Yom Kippur; this signifies a significant change from a solemn holy day to one of much joy. The historical significance of this religion is the memorialization of the 40-year the period where the children of Israel wandered the desert and lived in temporary homes. This year Sukkot will be occurring sunset of September 30th until the 7th of October. In Leviticus 23:33 this holiday becomes instituted states that there shall be no work done on the first and second days of the holiday. When celebrating this religion there can be several ties and links to modern Christianity holidays. A sukkah is used to celebrate and is a temporary “make-shift” shelter. Afterwards each day to celebrate one must “live or reside” in the shelter, but that obligation is normally fulfilled...

Infinite Love

...We met at a cancer patients' support group at our church. I have lung cancer and have had it for as long as I remember. I had been attending for about a month when I met him. At first I didn’t really know anyone, but quickly I became friends with Dave, who like me, suffered from lung cancer. Dave had been attending cancer patients' support group for a very long time and he was the one who introduced me to Charlie. I first met Charlie on a Thursday. I clearly remember the day. It was raining and I was just about to leave support group and walk out into the parking space, when Dave shouted out my name. I had seen Charlie at the meetings, but I had never spoken with him though - he was very shy, compared to Dave who is a very extrovert person. I went over to them and Dave introduced me to Charlie. We shook hands and I felt this weird connection right away. I didn’t get his number, so we didn’t talk until the next support group meeting. I had never been looking forward to support group meetings. I had always wanted to skip the meetings and lay in bed instead, but this time I was really looking forward to support group, I could barely wait. And that was mainly because I wanted to see Charlie again. But he didn’t show up for the next meeting. I sat next to Dave, but I didn’t want to ask him about Charlie. I didn’t want him to know I was interested. When support group was over, I went out into the parking space like I used to and there he was. I didn’t know what to do, but fortunately...
