Remembering Yesterday

Everyone has their own special place, a place that brings back memories of the good times. I grew up in a small two bedroom house, in a rural country town. Our house was old and small, but, nonetheless it was home. Even though I haven’t been back to the old house in almost a decade, I will always remember its smell and colors. Growing up, we did not have a lot, but what we did have was cherished. In this paper, I will write about the memories I have of the place I call “home”, let me take you on a visit there. Situated at the end of a dirt road which runs off another, larger county road is the place I call “home”. Here, my mother raised three girls without the help or companionship of a husband. The house set back about 200 feet from the road. As we stroll up the dirt drive lined with rows of wild gladiolas on each side, sits the tidy small, unpainted old frame house. On the porch, I can't help but notice a high-backed rocker on one side and a bench worn smooth by age on the other. Both remind me of the many hours spent here enjoying the weather and view. Turning the door knob and entering the foyer is like taking a step back in time. The door, is the same as when I was a kid, the windows are free of curtains, only shades yellowing from age, pulled at night, as if privacy is needed out here in the boondocks. Mom's big over-stuffed floral couch is set beside the well-stocked bookcase. One lonely picture with the words "Home, Sweet Home" hangs on the wall over the fireplace. Just to the right is a doorway, minus a door, calling us to investigate the sweet smell drifting our way. Upon entering the kitchen, a rich smell of freshly baked bread overtakes the senses. Mom removes the loaves from the belly of the oven leaving them to cool in neat rows on the old marble table. The walls were white and had little kitchen knick knacks like chickens and things of that sort displayed on the shelves. The cupboards were old and rickety but, as always, filled with snacks and candy for when company came. Turning toward the back door, and passing through a narrow hall. The walls going through the hall were lined with pictures of my family, mostly me and my sisters. Stepping out the back door, the first thing in view, is a medium sized dead tree with a rickety tire swing hanging from one of the larger limbs. The yard is filled with spots of somewhat green grass here and there. The once beautiful gardens and flower beds are now filled with weeds and dying flowers. My mother loved to tend to her garden, but since she is getting older, it has become harder for her to tend to her garden and flowers. The walkway is old, with broken cement bricks, but the pathway doesn't stop at the end of the old flower beds. It winds out behind a decrepit shack which was once storage for our bikes. Many days were spent running in, and, out of the shed exchanging bicycles for balls or jump ropes. As dusk approaches, we sit on the front porch and relax as we enjoy the sunset with soft ribbons of pink, orange, and, violet in the sky. The sun casts our long shadows across the porch and onto the wall behind us. Nature is all around us singing its night songs. Off in the distance, the fireflies light up, looking like small lanterns roaming the sky. The crickets and frogs start to sing an evening tune while bats dart overhead in search of a juicy tidbit for breakfast. The house joins with its creaks and cracks as the coolness of the evening settles around us. A visit to the old house brings back many fond memories, making me wish I could turn back time, to enjoy a few moments of youth and simplicity when life was so serene. Sometimes a simple sound or smell gives a quick flash to a certain memory or time in our lives. Hold on to your memories, because memories are the only things that don't change while everything else does.

Day Trippin Song Writing

..."The Easy Way Out" by Emma Schwartz “Day Tripper,” was written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon. Lennon sings the lyrics exquisitely. The vocals was sung by Lennon and McCartney. However, Lennon had the original idea for the melody after using LSD for the first time and work together with McCartney to finish it. I, for the most part, like the jingle because I think it has a catchy tune and an upbeat melody. This song gives me a feeling of buoyancy, like a trip or floating. Acid was beginning to play an active role in their music and they began to sing about the experience. Day Tripper is a jargon term for somebody who failed to entirely embrace the hippy existence, for the Beatles they involved the life but kept it concealed and only showed the well turned-out image side of themselves. This part of the song reminds me of a life filled with stress and drama. Stresses of being isolated because of the Beatle-mania fever with fans. Problems that they needed an outlet for, but yet you know they are tripping on the drugs to escape their stressful mayhem in life, they are justifying their actions. Although they see themselves as round-the-clock trippers, “fully committed drivers, she was just a day tripper.” they was someone who was committed only in part to the idea, the drugs took them on the trip to release themselves. Everyone has their own concerns in life, they want to escape from the real world, so I believe individuals relate to these lyrics. “Got a good reason, for taking...

...Firdawsi in the Shah-nama skillfully employs foreshadowing to create suspense, emphasize the tragedy, and portray the mood. Foreshadowing is very important and change the way a story is read. Firdawsi did a great good of foreshadowing when he wrote the Shah-nama. The Shah-nama is a tragedy that tells the story of Rustam and Suhrab. Rustam is a mighty leader who unknowingly kills his son Suhrab. Creating suspense in any story is very important to keep a reader entertained and actively reading the story. One way this can be done is by foreshadowing. In the Shah-nama, Firdawsi, the author uses foreshadowing to create suspense. “Let us dismiss such fancies from our hearts, for he will come to fight with me tomorrow.(4) This creates suspense because Suhrab is expecting another battle tomorrow. One can be lead to believe that the fight will be epic battle. One can also be lead to believe that Rustam will find out the truth. In conclusion this is how Firdawsi used foreshadowing to create suspense. A tragedy will often be the topic of a poem. Firdawsi used foreshadowing to emphasize the tragedy in the Shah-nama. “My mother told me I should recognize my father”(5). This is where Rustam figures out he might have a connection to Suhrab. The reader can also predict that the truth will come out and Suhrab will provide proof that he is Rustam’s seed. This also emphasizes how tragic the kill of one’s child can be. As you can see foreshadowing is important in a story especially when emphasizing...

...Allen Watts English 1302 Mr. Jeffers September 29, 2011 Short Happy Life As I begin to read this story it’s obvious that something went wrong in the initial hunt, but the third person narration takes you through different point of views as the story begins. Wilson an overpowering hunt guide with the courage of a (Lion) sets out to prove he’s worthy of his reputation. From his witty confidence in selecting drinks after their hunt to his overseeing ways to make sure everyone get a good breakfast before the day start on their courageous expeditions day after day. The narration is letting the reader solely see that Wilson is in control of the first act of the story. He ensures that the hunter receive all rewards from the hunt, even if it didn’t go as plan as this story was told. I read in the narration where the men whom did not participate in the hunt, was updated on the events of the day, and change their character of the hunter, Mr. Macomber. Mr. Wilson intervenes to squash all negative talks of the paid guest. As the character tries to assert the triumph of the kill on to Mr. Wilson, he constantly relinquishes it back to the hunter, so that it seem theirs hasn’t been a problem in the day’s event, only a successful kill. I see a troublesome relationship with Mr. and Mrs. Macomber as the narrator encourages you to notice the attraction building for Wilson through Mrs. Macromber...

Makes You Stronger

...The first time I got drunk, I was in the eighth grade. On a Thursday evening, a gallon of Carlo Rossi Chianti sat in its usual place on our kitchen table. While my family lounged in the living room mesmerized by the television set, I pilfered sips from this seemingly endless supply. I still have the image of the red vomit stained wall next to my bed in the early morning hours. Even though it made me sick, I didn’t stop getting drunk until I was 41, when my middle-aged body started to rebel in a language I could finally understand. Torrential night sweats and heart palpitations made it clear that this stuff would kill me. The mother of a five-year-old daughter at the time, I couldn’t let that happen. Fast-forward three years and I’m feeling grounded in my sobriety, smug in the perception that I had narrowly escaped disaster when the phone call came. My beloved 20-year-old nephew was killed in a car crash at one in the morning. When I heard the time of the crash, I instinctively asked, “Was he drinking?” The answer was yes. Ironically, I spent the next four months battling the urge to numb the unbearable pain of grief with alcohol. Not only had our family lost this beautiful child, but I also nursed the guilt that my own example of alcoholic indulgence and carelessness had helped put Daniel on that rural road at 1 a.m. He and his family had been experiencing hard times and his mother told me that a few months before Daniel’s death, she said to him, “What doesn’t kill...

African American Paper

...Preach hides from some hoodlums in an bathroom that is occupied. There's also romance in the film, as Preach attempts to woo classy beauty Brenda; the two even lose their virginity together in a truly tasteful scene. The movie ends in tragedy, and since the characters have depth, we feel the loss. “Cooley High” set the standard for African-American film excellence when it was made. This film plays on various emotions, and you definitely feel for all of the characters. Sure, some of the acting is a little wooden, but fortunately, those parts aren't pivotal. The music is sensational, with classic songs from Motown and the tearjerker hit single, sang by then Motown’s newest recording artist, G.C. Cameron “ Its So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday”, which was later released in 1991 by the group Boys II Men, in honor of the movie. Even though “Cooley High” may not have inspirational or depict a positive role model, it’s a part of my life that brings back memories of just having fun and “obeying no laws expect...

What Is Poetry

...“You can remember tomorrow. I’ll remember all of our yesterdays.” I read that quote from an online fan-fiction. I can almost already here what you’re thinking right now: how can something posted on the internet by some (presumably) rabid hormonal teenage girl even be considered as poetic? She isn’t even a legit poet. This isn’t even an excerpt from a poem! For a little background information, the story is about two star-crossed lovers (Surprise, surprise!) where one gets into an accident and suffers anterograde amnesia, meaning they immediately forget the events of the previous day the moment they wake up that next morning, and the other has an incurable lung disease and needs to introduce himself every single day on top of that. Long story short, one person tragically dies and the other completely forgets he even existed. Without reading the story itself first, one might initially think of the saying as some cheesy line they’d see vandalized on a public bathroom wall. But on the other hand, one can’t deny that it does evoke emotion even if just a little bit, and leaves them thinking what deeper meaning does this saying hold and what that vandal was even thinking when they wrote it. Remembering the "tomorrows" instead of the "yesterdays" is kind of mentally impossible and grammatically incorrect. But I guess it’s the author’s way of describing the unnatural and painful love story between the two. One is stuck in the past, while one is living on borrowed time. It describes...

George was in denial, every time he thought about Residential Schools he was disgusted with the actions he was accused of and committed. “Johnny begins to hum a slow melody, ‘Yesterday’ by the Beatles. GEORGE recognizes it and stops instantly.” (p.24) This what George sang to the kids until they fell asleep. Johnny then states “That was your favourite song. It was the last sound we heard as we fell asleep … then later that night you would wake us up, for other reasons. I remember. My body remembers.” (p.24) This is where it is clear that George is remembering the awful things he did to the children. Hinting to the awful things he did to them...

...best attitude and maturity. At the moment when all this things and emotions happen, many people prefer to take their time to breath and calm their selves, sometimes they prefer to eat junk food until they feel good or just go outside to smoke a cigarette, and more things that they do depending of the age of the person, but the point is that, all of us do something to feel better. Is interesting that people have their own favorite place or environment, where they can express their feelings, communicate with their own soul or just feel safe.   As I said above, all we have our hard moments in life; we are humans and we have feelings and emotions. With this essay, I wanted to express something to you that happened to me yesterday, and I didn´t know about it.   Yesterday, I was so happy because my mom said that she was going to prepare lasagna, my favorite food. I went to the university very excited, wetting to lunchtime, so I can eat a big piece of melted cheese that comes from the juicy lasagna. When I finished my classes I didn’t care to say bye to my friends, I just ordered a taxi to go home fast and eat it. When I arrived, my mom said that she had a problem; she burned the lasagna. I looked at her eyes very angry; I was passing for all my bad moments because I was really hungry, and the first thing that I saw was a black burned lasagna. I said many bad things that I didn’t want to say to her. The only thing that I remember was about my reaction, after screamed to my mom I went...
