A Theory of Human Motivation
A. H. Maslow (1943)
Originally Published in Psychological Review, 50, 370-396.

[p. 370] I. INTRODUCTION In a previous paper (13) various propositions were presented which would have to be included in any theory of human motivation that could lay claim to being definitive. These conclusions may be briefly summarized as follows: 1. The integrated wholeness of the organism must be one of the foundation stones of motivation theory. 2. The hunger drive (or any other physiological drive) was rejected as a centering point or model for a definitive theory of motivation. Any drive that is somatically based and localizable was shown to be atypical rather than typical in human motivation. 3. Such a theory should stress and center itself upon ultimate or basic goals rather than partial or superficial ones, upon ends rather than means to these ends. Such a stress would imply a more central place for unconscious than for conscious motivations. 4. There are usually available various cultural paths to the same goal. Therefore conscious, specific, local-cultural desires are not as fundamental in motivation theory as the more basic, unconscious goals. 5. Any motivated behavior, either preparatory or consummatory, must be understood to be a channel through which many basic needs may be

simultaneously expressed or satisfied. Typically an act has more than one motivation. 6. Practically all organismic states are to be understood as motivated and as motivating. 7. Human needs arrange themselves in hierarchies of pre-potency. That is to say, the appearance of one need usually rests on the prior satisfaction of another, more pre-potent need. Man is a perpetually wanting animal. Also no need or

Renewable Energy Reources

...WIND POWER AS A RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCE Wind power is the conversion of wind energy into a useful form of energy, such as using wind turbines to make electricity, wind mills for mechanical power, wind pumps for pumping water or drainage, or sails to propel ships. Humans have been using wind power for at least 5,500 years to propel sailboats and sailing ships, and architects have used wind-driven natural ventilation in buildings since similarly ancient times. Windmills have been used for irrigation pumping and for milling grain since the 7th century AD in what is now Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan. In the United States, the development of the "water-pumping windmill" was the major factor in allowing the farming and ranching of vast areas otherwise devoid of readily accessible water. Wind pumps contributed to the expansion of rail transport systems throughout the world, by pumping water from water wells for the steam locomotives. The multi-bladed wind turbine atop a lattice tower made of wood or steel was, for many years, a fixture of the landscape throughout rural America. When fitted with generators and battery banks, small wind machines provided electricity to isolated farms. The modern wind power industry began in 1979 with the serial production of wind turbines by Danish manufacturers Kuriant, Vestas, Nordtank, and Bonus. These early turbines were small by today's standards, with capacities of 20–30 kW each. Since then, they have increased greatly in size, with...

Human Reource Management in Advertising Agency

...HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT IN ADVERTISING AGENCY Lecturer PhD. Cristina LEOVARIDIS State University of Political and Administrative Studies Bucharest Abstract: The paper presents advertising agencies as a new type of knowledge-based organizations (knowledge-intensive organizations), whose essential resource is its people with their competences, in conditions in which in the present society knowledge is becoming the most important source of competitive advantage for current organizations. Such professional services firms have to practice a particular type of management, focused on their employees, on thier aspirations and satisfaction, therefore the component processes of the human resources management (recruitment, selection, integration, motivation etc.) have a particularly important role in obtaining employees’ loyalty and increasing their performance and consequently in the survival and development of the company. The empirical research used case studies based on in-depth interviews with managers in Bucharest advertising organizations, but also a survey through questionnaire sent by e-mail to advertisers across the country, to provide a clear picture on the characteristics of human resources management in Romanian advertising agencies. Key words: knowledge-intensive organization, advertising agency, human resources management, competences Introduction Nowadays, competition between organizations - becoming more flexible and innovative adhocracies - is "moving" more and...

Rowe Case Study

...HR353 1. Discuss how a ROWE-type program would fit in organizations where you have worked. Explain why it would or would not work. A ROWE type of program would fit in my current organization by implementing more stringent timelines on certain steps of the contract award and management process, and allowing employees to enjoy more time off, as it is stated in the Best Buy case. The problem with implementing these types of timelines, specifically in my organization, would be that many results are dependent on outside factors. Procurement, whether it would be for a service, a commodity, or construction, depends on other people fulfilling their end of the tasks at hand, unlike the production of equipment or sales. Furthermore, the work of contract administration doesn’t really end and workloads on employees, in my specific organization, are almost never ending (“your technically never really caught up”). For this reason I believe ROWE could have a chance to fail in my organization. However, if staffing levels went up certain steps could be accelerated and used with ROWE, but I would feel a bit uncomfortable placing a multimillion dollar negotiation on someone that is just trying to finish the task to have the rest of the day off. I also understand many other factors and proper evaluations would be needed to make such a determination. So, technically, I would say a test run of such program would determine whether it would or wouldn’t work. With the people, resources...

...Renewable Energy hotmail2008 Table of Contents Executive Summary 2 Introduction 3 Wind Energy Data 5 Analysis 6 Conclusion 8 Bibliography 9 Executive Summary The majority of our nation’s energy is highly dependent on finite fossil energy sources, like coal and oil. Using fossil fuels to create electricity creates emissions that are both harmful to the environment and our health. Renewable energy sources provide a clean and viable long term alternative to fossil fuels. Renewable energy is energy generated by natural resources in the form of solar, wind, geothermal, hydroelectric, and tidal waves. Among the diversity of renewable energy, wind energy is the fastest growing power technology in the world. According to the U.S. government Energy Information Administration, the production of wind energy will be at least 20% by the year 2030. This report will prove the validity of this statement by using hypothesis analysis. Hypothesis analysis will reject the null hypothesis that wind energy production will be less then 20% in favor of the alternate hypothesis that states wind energy production will be at least 20% or greater. Introduction The majority of our nation’s energy is produced from the burning of fossil fuels, like coal, oil, and natural gas. Life as we know it and our economy revolves around these finite resources. Unfortunately, with our great demand for energy, especially gasoline, world production of oil has already reached its maximum...

New York Times Analysis

...Christopher Sanderson, Jennifer Clemente, Andres Delgado FIN6590 PMBA New York Times Bail Out Analysis In January 2009, Carlos Slim Hula decided to offer what he believed to be a generous deal to a cash strapped New York Times. With a $400M debt facility looming in May, the New York Times has been exploring various positions to increase or bolster its cash reserves to either restructure or refinance the debt facility. The offer from Carlos Slim was for $250M in cash, repayable at 14% annual interest rate coupon, and an attached warrant that would allow him to exercise a buyout of 16 million shares of stock. The question comes down to whether this was a calculated, debt based investment of Carlos Slim’s money, or whether he has other motives for providing the media company the money, which is part of an industry currently struggling. The first thing that must be stated is that Carlos Slim already has an investment of 6.9% in NYT stock, a deal that had lost 50% of its value already. If he exercised his warrants for class “A” shares of New York Times stock, it would give him nearly 17% of currently available stock. This stock would be different than the class “B” stock, which has a majority share by the current New York Times owners, the Sulzberger family. (Kafka, 2009) However, he would still be the second largest shareholder in the company. This puts a spin on the “bailout” Carlos is offering. He could be attempting to boost his own shares for a selloff. He could...

Why We Hate Hr?

...A REVIEW OF “WHY WE HATE HUMAN REOURCE Name: Instructor: Course: Date: A review of “Why we hate HR” HR stands for human resources. HR refers to a company element, which deals with the aspects/needs of humans among the workers (Fisher et al, 2008). In many companies, an HR department can provide a variety of services for employees. Some employees working in HR are taken as forming the department, but many workers outside the department can do something not only on financial matters, but also on the human aspects of workers employment. For instance, a supervisor may have a responsibility to hire and fir e workers, giving day-to-day feedback on work, writing employee reviews and supporting and encouraging workers. This is so even though a supervisor is not one of the HR departments. In many large companies and some small ones, there have been critiques that there is a lack of humanity in terms of caring for the employees. When we examine in the full spectrum of their functions within the company, Human Resources is extremely valuable to a company. The article by Keith H. Hammonds gives the flaws in human resources. Reading it one may seem to have a notion that the writer is against HR in business organizations, which is not the case. Hammonds identifies the flaws in HR, and his criticism gives some hints to improving HR so that it can produce desirable results in business. The writer identifies some of the flaws and argues around them in...

Information Technology

...BACKGROUND Over the past several decades, an increasing number of human resource managers in the public sector realized that, for a variety of reasons, they needed to upgrade their information system. Once they chose to follow the path of IS conversion, they became aware of many of the same challenges that others have faced in similar circumstances. Some managers began to realize that their projects began to spiral out of control into the realm of failure sometimes without their understanding the reasons why, in turn wasting vast sums of taxpayer dollars in the process. The public sector has had to take a step forward in recent decades from the older and usually slower legacy systems that they relied on for previous decades to systems that were promoted as more efficient and definitely more complex. A vast array of knowledge, tools, and options has become available to managers that are progressing through what is usually a long and uncertain conversion process. The process of managing people is not easy, whether they are few or many. Management of firms of accountants and consultants need to be certain that the right team of specialists is in the right place at the right time, over and over again. Information internal to the organization is important for enabling the organization to attack the opportunities in the environment. If it is not available, managers take uninformed decisions which are likely to lead to poor achievement of goals. Ready access to accurate and...

Benefits of Premarital Education

...Research Paper – The Benefits of Premarital Education Liberty University LIFC 301: Marriage Coaching October 8, 2012 * * * * * * * * Abstract The divorce rate in the United States continues to hover around the fifty percent mark and within the ranks of faithful church attenders the percentage of marriages that end in divorce is almost equal to those from secular society, but the actual numbers are higher due to the fact that born again believers are more likely to marry than their secular counterparts. Divorce leaves much greater damage in its wake than just the broken hearts of the divided former couple. Families are torn apart, economic structures are rent asunder, children have their support systems abolished, and it is often left up to the community at large to pick up the pieces. Premarital education, counseling, or coaching shows promise in helping marriages to remain intact. Couples who engage in premarital preparation reduce the likelihood of facing divorce by as much as thirty percent. By helping pre-married couples to learn a relatively small skill set a coach, counselor, member of the clergy, educator, or lay facilitator can enable a couple to not only reduce the learning curve towards a vitalized relationship, but they can improve their odds of crossing the until “death do us part” finish line still together. Introduction While it is often quoted that the divorce rate in the United States is at or above fifty...
