CULTURAL EVENT REPORT

As a result of the Norton Museum of Art being closed, I had no choice but to do this project on line. The Museum I chose to visit was the Philadelphia Museum of Art, I have always wanted to visit this particular museum and I hope that I will. On September 4th 2012 I visited the Online Museum of the Philadelphia Museum of Art After navigating through the site looking at different works of art and sculptures, I felt so lost in all that I saw it was as if I was transported back in time, I could visualize the painters at work, and it was as if I could feel their passion radiating from these canvases, the vibrant colors, the elaborate brush strokes and attention to minute details all brought across the message of these paintings I spent close to two hours looking at paintings dating from the Baroque period all the way into the modern age but the paintings that really caught my eyes were those from the 17th century. Of these the ones that made an impression on me were:

1. “Virgin and child with Angel” painted in 1642 by Simon Vouet in France. This portrays a virgin half sitting, half crouching with a cherubic infant on her hips while her focus was on the basket of fruits that she was eating from, oblivious of the angel to her right that was playing with the infant in her arms. The scenery is painted overshadowed by a large tree, possibly an Oak; in the distance a lake can be seen. The simplicity of the painting and its bright colors is pleasing to the eyes and one feels a sense of serenity and peace while viewing this piece. The characters are in accord with each other and there is almost a reverent feel to this setting. The sight of the angel playing with the child is thought provoking and leads us to remember that Jesus was born to the Virgin Mary, who herself has been visited by angels.

Fig 1. Virgin and Child with Angel

2. “Prometheus Bound” by Peter Paul Reuben, painted in the Netherlands this piece of work took Reuben six years to complete, a huge piece of work it is very dramatic and elaborate the colors are bright, the attention to detail is very evident. An enormous bird with wings stretched from one end of the canvas to the other, is using his sharp talons to rip open the chest of Prometheus this being done he proceeds to eat his liver , all this is being done while Prometheus is chained to the rocks ,helpless while this huge bird keeps ripping at his flesh . Above them the sky is grey and cloudy as if troubled by this event. This painting represent a Greek Myth that Prometheus stole fire from the Gods as a result of this his liver grew back daily only to be eaten again by this giant bird , as punishment for his crime

Fig2 Prometheus Bound

Even though these two pieces are opposite in nature I chose them because to me they represent both sides of life the good and the bad, the purity of the Virgin is a sharp contrast to the obvious crime and punishment of Prometheus, it also helps to show balance it cannot be all good and at the same time it cannot be all bad.

The collection of works by these great masters were outstanding, after viewing these works I still felt like I wanted more like something was missing, I wanted to stay as long as I could just looking taking it all in .

\ In closing I just want to say that it is my intention to visit this Museum in person just so that I can experience firsthand what I only had a taste of .

Cultural Event Report - the Philadelphia Art Museum

...The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview about my experience attending the Philadelphia Art Museum on March 15, 2013. The museum is Located in Philadelphia, PA and the exhibition that caught my attention was Journeys to New Worlds it explores the artistic exchanges between Spain and Portugal and their colonies in the Americas and Asia during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. (The Philadelphia Museum of Art, p. Philadelphia Art Museum). A journey to New Worlds originates The exhibition is magnificent and two pieces that I enjoyed were Our Lady of Mount Carmel with Bishop Saints, and Our Lady of Pomata, a coquera. It is extremely quite as people stop in different areas to look around at so much art. I personally found some place to sit and absorb as much information as I could. My fiancé came along with me only because it is a long drive from where I live and I do not like driving far by myself. He enjoyed it as much as I did; we both sat there and studied different pieces for quite a while. Although Our Lady of Mount Carmel with Bishop Saints interested me you seem to understand the comparison while looking at it after being there, I feel that this picture focuses on the child because he is the center of this image, and the mother's love and caring that is expressed in her face and in the way that she is holding the kid. Looking for some reference about the painting I found that it is Roberta and Richard Huber’s collection reflects the arts at continuing...

Analyse How the Impacts of the Notting Hill Carnival Could Be Measured

...Analyse how the impacts of the Notting Hill Carnival could be measured. What methods could have been used to measure the impacts of similar events and what are the issues surrounding those methods? In 2003, a London Development Agency (LDA 2003) report into the Notting Hill Carnival found that ‘it brought in an estimated income of £93 million into London in 2002, supporting in the region of 3000 full time equivalent jobs. The study and review of other aspects of the carnival lead to increased attention from the Mayor of London and other stakeholders (1) which lead to the Notting Hill Carnival ‘Strategic Review’ in 2004. The report states that ‘the true value of the Notting Hill Carnival, in social, economic and cultural terms, has received little recognition in the past’. (2) But how can the Notting Hill Carnival be more accurately measured? Economic: The review highlights a number of economic impacts of the Carnival, with various statistics available. However, these stats focus heavily on the immediate economic impact, and do consider the costs for the negative impact of the event; policing, traffic, pollution. As highlighted by Getz 2012, the economic impacts should include a ‘comprehensive evaluation of the costs and benefits of the event’. (3) Environmental: Environment impacts have been measured in the past through the amount of waste generated. (4) Future environmental impact studies could include the measurement and tracking of the reduction of the carbon...

The town has taken enthusiastically to the idea of a revival of the midsummer celebration of its heritage, talents and interests. There was a latent hunger for a fuller cultural and community life - a hunger which helped secure the success of the Barnaby Festival. This evaluation demonstrates how the benefits to the town extend from the immediate economic impact to a more substantial social and cultural legacy. There is a widely held feeling that the Festival has been the catalyst for a growth in confidence and sense of identity, and has heralded a richer civic life in Macclesfield. Barnaby 2012 has again been a huge task for the team of volunteers and would have been impossible without the unstinting...

Art on the Square is held in the down town location of the city that I reside in for more than 7 of my life. Art Square is a very art learning display from Art painting to Music concerts. Seeing the meaning of this occasion to the little town that I was raised in, I made the choice to attend this event after my grandmother past and continue to go see it yearly, since then I have attended every year after. Even though the art is lovely and breathe taking that is not all this event means to me, for me as a local resident it means something to be proud of as a community. Brand Strategies 6. Critical Analysis of Brand Strategies 7. Recommendations 8. Conclusion Executive Summary This report was commissioned to examine the Manly Council case study and the strategies they use for their business and how they can relate to actual marketing theories and models. This research draws attention to the two strategies that Manly Council uses one of which is the beach and how they utilize this in enhancing the experience of tourists. Manly Council does this by placing eateries, shopping centers, services such as bike tours and aquariums and hosting annual events such as the International Jazz Festival. The Holt’s Theory of Cultural Branding where it states that brands are and can influence the societies culture fits into this strategy as Manly Council has created the ‘Surf City’ brand to align the values of its residents to create a beach culture for them to showcase to visitors. However in the strive for personal sovereignty is almost impossible through brands because cultural branding will force too many cultural icons for one to handle and time is short for one to reach sovereignty. Further research indicates that social media is also a tool used by Manly Council to increase brand awareness. The Hall’s Tourism...

Tour de France

...The Tour de France Executive Summary 1.1 Introduction and Description of the Tour De France The Tour de France is an annual bicycle race held in France and nearby countries. First staged in 1903, the race covered more than 3,600 kilometres (2,200 miles) and lasted three weeks. Nearly 200 riders begin each tour on the first weekend in July (Thompson, 2008). The number of teams usually varies between 20 to 22 teams, with nine riders in each team. No set numbers of stages are required in the Tour each year, but in recent years, at least 20 stages have comprised the race. This report aims to examine the development, management, impacts and success of this event and how it could be successfully replicated in Northern Ireland. 1.2 Background and development of the Tour De France A hundred summers ago, the Tour de France was born out of political conflict, and from a circulation war between competing sports journals. An editor of one these journals - Henri Desgrange, decided that he needed a sensational publicity venture to attract new readers. He himself was an enthusiastic cyclist and cycle racer. A six-day race was suggested all around France. Long-distance cycle races were a popular means to sell more newspapers. If it succeeded, it would help the journal match its rivals. The first Tour de France was staged in 1903 and the plan was a five-stage...

How Culture and Location Affect News

...(Instructor’s name with Title) English 102H Date: Outline I. Introduction A. This section briefly examines the delicate situation that Al Jazeera finds itself in: As the first and largest independent Arabic satellite station, Al Jazeera has had to face endless critics most of whom are from the West for its Arabic sentiments. Despite all accusations, the station has only grown in popularity in the Middle East and among Arabs around the world. B. While Western countries such as the US and Russia have expressed their reservations about the objectivity of the station, its audiences has only been growing especially among Arabs. Its stance on popularizing Arabic sentiments may be due to its location and the cultural beliefs of its target audience, reporters and owners. Thesis Statement: Using Al Jazeera and the New York Times as primary cases, this paper explores how the location of a media outlet and culture of its primary employees and target audience can affect the ways in which news items are reported. As it was briefly discussed, Al Jazeera’s primary reporting obligations may possibly be to protect the interests of its region and culture. This paper explains how and why media outlets may, perhaps unwillingly, take stances on many matters just because of their locations and cultures. II. Body Paragraphs A.
