...- using money it has simply created out of thin air. The institutions selling those bonds (either commercial banks or other financial businesses such as insurance companies) will then have "new" money in their accounts, which then boosts the money supply. It was tried first by a central bank in Japan to get it out of a period of deflation following its asset bubble collapse in the 1990s. Prior to 2009, QE had never been tried before in the UK. Is this printing money? These days the Bank of England does not have to literally print money - it is all done electronically. However, economists still argue that QE is the same principle as printing money as it is a deliberate expansion of the central bank's balance sheet and the monetary base. How does it work? Under QE a central bank purchases government bonds from private sector companies or institutions, typically insurance companies, pension funds and High Street banks. This increased demand for the government bonds pushes up their value, thereby making them more expensive to buy, and so they become a less attractive investment. This means that the companies who sold the bonds may use the proceeds to invest in other companies or lend to individuals, rather than buying any more of the bonds. The hope is that with banks, pension funds and insurance firms now more enthusiastic about lending to companies and individuals, the interest rates they...

What Is Quantitative Easing

...said it would spend a further $40bn (£35bn) per month. This was on top of the $2.3tn (£1.4tn) the Fed had already put into QE since 2008. What is quantitative easing? Usually, central banks try to raise the amount of lending and activity in the economy indirectly, by cutting interest rates. Lower interest rates encourage people to spend, not save. But when interest rates can go no lower, a central bank's only option is to pump money into the economy directly. That is quantitative easing (QE). The way the central bank does this is by buying assets - usually government bonds - using money it has simply created out of thin air. The institutions selling those bonds (either commercial banks or other financial businesses such as insurance companies) will then have "new" money in their accounts, which then boosts the money supply. The New Norma

...l in Zimbabwe Understanding the “new normal” in Zimbabwe The term ‘new normal’ is a term coined by Mohamed El-Erian, co-chief investment officer of Pimco, a California investment firm to refer to the situation the world found itself in after the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2008-2010. From a global perspective, this phenomenon has led to mixed fortunes on the economies of different countries. Characteristic of the ‘new normal’ is the remarkable gaining of economic influence of the East due to the growing shift in global economic activity from West to East. Emerging Markets (Ems) proved to be a force to reckon with due to the increased flow of capital between the (Ems) themselves and to industrial countries as well as due to the increase in their stake or share in the global output from 40% in 1990 to 50% and expected to grow to 60% by 2035. The Global recession resulted in a deliberate greater government intervention in most countries to save respective banking systems from collapsing. As a result, there is a significant role to be played by governments in the economies of most countries which might have a negative impact of financial protectionism in some instances or lead to greater global financial coordination and transparency. In the ‘new normal’, the West has lost its ability to set the global agenda as seen in the transition from a G-7 to a Group of 20 which includes players in the Emerging Markets like Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Korea, Saudi Arabia...

Anchored on four strategic clusters — value addition and beneficiation, infrastructure and utilities, food security and nutrition, social services and poverty eradication — the five-year development policy is premised on leveraging the country’s natural resources to achieve economic growth through empowerment of ordinary Zimbabweans. An average of 7,3 percent growth target and creation of about two million jobs is to be achieved within the period. Zimbabweans are pinning their hopes on the anticipated turn around, seeking answers on progress made so far. Finance and Economic Development Minister Patrick Chinamasa shares some of the achievements made towards meeting the ideals of the national blue-print. While insisting the economy is on the right path towards recovery, he also captures highlights on progress from mega deals signed between Zimbabwe, China and Russia recently. “As you may all be aware, the Zim-Asset framework covers a number of issues across well defined clusters. We need reliable infrastructure and a strong production base in order to achieve sustainable development,” he told Parliament last week. ...

...human habitation going back 100,000 years has been found at Kabwe, north of Lusaka. Beginning around 1000 AD, Swahili-Arab slave-traders gradually penetrated the region from their city-states on the eastern coast of Africa. Between the 14th and 16th centuries a Bantu-speaking group known as the Maravi migrated from present-day Congo (Zaïre) and established kingdoms in eastern and southeastern Zambia. In the 18th century, Portuguese explorers following the routes of Swahili-Arab slavers from the coast into the interior became the first known European visitors. After the Zulu nation to the south began scattering its neighbors, victims of the Difaqane (forced migration) began arriving in Zambia in the early 19th century. Squeezed out of Zimbabwe, the Makalolo people moved into southern Zambia, pushing the Tonga out of the way and grabbing Lozi territory on the upper Zambezi River. Zambia is a land locked country with a population 12,935,368. Kenneth Kaunda, a militant former schoolteacher, took over the leadership of the Africans from the more moderate Nkumbula and in 1959 formed a new party, the United National Independence Party (UNIP). Following a massive civil disobedience campaign in 1962, Africans were given a larger voice in the affairs of the protectorate. On 24 October 1964 Northern Rhodesia became independent as the Republic of Zambia, with Kaunda as its first president; he was reelected in 1968 and 1973. The main problems faced by Kaunda in the first decade of...

The Development of Conservation in Theory and Practice

...The Development of Conservation in Theory and Practice In considering the issue of wildlife conservation, a link to development rises quickly to the surface. After all, the animals seemingly considered the most prized by the collective popular consciousness, such as primates, occur predominantly in tropical areas of the world considered by most to be “underdeveloped.” According to the United Nations Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the rate of growth in developed countries, mostly those located in Europe and America, between 2005 and 2050 is expected to remain relatively minimal, while the population of the developing world is projected to substantially increase, from 5.3 billion to 7.8 billion, over the same period of time (United Nations Population Division 2005, vi). This includes a more drastic increase in the world’s 50 least developed country (mostly located in Africa and Asia), where the number of inhabitants is projected to swell from 0.8 billion to 1.7 billion over the same period. As such, in putting together a theory for development more broadly and conservation more specifically, it is crucial that the link between societal growth and natural resource and wildlife degradation be explored. In the following discussion, I hope to accomplish a few things. First, I will consider development theory broadly, looking at its evolution through time and some popular contemporary critiques. Though development theory (as it stands...
