In the play A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen, the story follows Nora Helmer and the life she has with her husband Torvald Helmer, who treats her as if she is his doll. The play was written in 1879 and the play takes place in the same decade. Throughout the whole play, Henrik Ibsen demonstrates the importance that social class had in the nineteenth century. In addition to the importance of social class, Ibsen also reveals the role that people were expected to live up to during the nineteenth century. To express and show how it was during this time, Henrik Ibsen’s play shows how Nora and Torvald struggle to live in a society where you expected to act a certain way to uphold your social standing. The time that the play takes place is when there …show more content…
The expectations of the upper middle class was that a family be debt free, have good morals, and kids at home. The wife was expected to be a stay at home mom who takes care of the kids and serve her husband. In the play A Doll’s House you can see how of the expectations that the middle class play out. Torvald Helmer calls Nora his “little skylark”, who will follow whatever he says to do. Torvald Helmer is the man of the household and he manages the family’s money and the family as a whole. This shows how during the nineteenth century, women were not able to be who they really are because of the expectations that the upper middle class brings. During this time, society was seen as exclusively male which meant that females were judged in the point of view of a man. When Nora decides to leave her husband Torvald Helmer, it came as a surprise to people who read the novel during the time it was published. The expectation of women during that time was never turned away from because there was laws that defended the ideology. Laws during the nineteenth century kept women from voting or borrowing money without having the permission of their …show more content…
The play shows that Henrik Ibsen was concerned with the ideas of freedom and change. A Doll's House is a direct representation of these two ideas. Ibsen presented the idea of freedom through his play and it is shown when Nora leaves Torvald Helmer and is finally set free from being under his rule. Henrik Ibsen also showed the idea freedom by being the voice for women during the nineteenth century. This play, surprised many people because they would not have expected it to end the way it did, but it gave women the courage to embrace and take advantage of the freedom they now had. A lot of change came with A Doll’s House because it was a play that went away from the social norms that people were used to in the nineteenth

A Doll's House Henrik Ibsen Research Paper

...In “A Doll’s House”, a play by Henrik Ibsen a woman named Nora has decided to leave her family due to an unhappy marriage. Nora’s decision to leave her family and end her marriage isn’t the only way to reclaim her identity and humanity. Nora can distance herself from Helmer and slowly find who she really is. She can speak up about how she really feels about being treated like a doll and not as an equal in their marriage. This is depicted when she tells Helmer “But our home has been nothing but a playroom. I have been your doll wife...” (Ibsen 67) Nora is upset at how she isn’t permitted to have her own beliefs or act the way she wants. She wanted to be her own independent woman and make her own decisions instead of being a typical submissive wife....

A Dolls House

...Terrell Thompson English 102 22 April 2014 The nineteenth century saw many changes to daily American life, with war, technical advances, and the industrial revolution. All of these events majorly impacted the human lifestyle and way of life, especially the division of gender roles. Henrik Ibsen published A Doll’s House in the midst of all of these changes. At the time, he was highly critiqued at the premier because his play went against the nineteenth century and Victorian marriage norms by concluding the play with Nora finding herself after leaving the ideal marriage. In my research, I have discovered that this play was not necessarily geared toward a feministic view, but self liberation for all human beings. Nora Helmer, the protagonist throughout the play, is the adored wife of a newly hired bank manager. She is a very tender-hearted and happy woman. She knew her purpose in life was to dedicate her own to her husband. She was to be happy for the sake of her husband, Torvald Helmer and her children. Mr. Helmer is portrayed to be a very commendable man and who stands firm in his affirmation of faith and is loyally devoted to his family. He would be the match that every mother would want for her daughter. Nora considered herself very fortunate. She admires her husband, not only for his hard work ethic and devotion to making a better life for his family during such harsh living conditions, she feels shielded and protected in his presence. When a woman loves...

Feminism in to the Lighthouse

...masterpiece To the Lighthouse she uses large number of images to convey her feminist ideas. This Research paper focuses on To the Lighthouse with feminist perspective. How ‘To the Lighthouse’ projects its challenges or realization of productive and creative possibilities of female characters like Mrs. Ramsay, Lily Briscoe, Nancy Ramsay, and other characters who move around these central characters and how these characters are to be studied with the feministic point of view and built as a portrait of real woman in the Victorian England as well as its relevance in the present scenario. Our efforts are to bring out the voice of female characters’ echo in the novel considering these various roles in the novel. INTRODUCTION  In the Post-Modern period, the feministic perspective has been much travelled especially in the writing of female authors or poets. The word ‘servitude’ (Fanon) in the feministic reading has been much taken in to consideration. To the Lighthouse, much discussed, debated and criticized like its length of writing in the panorama of Feminism. The writers’ efforts to portray the real woman as far as milieu and moment are concerned, is to challenge patriarchal family and treatment of woman. Reading To the lighthouse strikes researcher’s mind of various feministic test like ‘Look Back in Anger’ by John Osborn, ‘Death of A Salesman’ by Arthur Miller, ‘A Doll’s House’ by Henrik Ibsen, ‘Middlemarch’ by George Eliot, ‘Frankenstein’ by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelly, ‘An Introduction’...
