Single Still Image Analysis

...A picture with a purpose either good or bad can take on many different meanings. One single still image can have ability to change the opinion and beliefs of the masses, when reality is transformed into a tangible picture. It often takes on a new meaning for the person holding it, not just a random moment in time. It’s a still shot of an entire group of people who don’t know you personally, but yet hating you for the person you love. As seen in the picture from the Washington Post following the vote on same sex marriage in California. Proud to stand on a street corner and hold up signs denouncing thousands of people for who they love. The One

...downs. I've been able to write papers but I've always needed a little bit of help to complete them. My mom has always been there when I am having problems writing papers. There have been times where I am amazing at them and knock them out like nothing. These are papers are usually short stories or something I can relate to. Then theres times where nothing comes to me and it seems like it takes forever to write them. When writing the papers one of the difficulties came from what I was writing about. In high school papers stressed me out because I knew I was going to have trouble with them. When I had to write my paper for chemistry, I worried about the length, how many citation, and how to cite it. I ask myself how does confidence impact my ability to write? On the one hand the papers I have the most confidence writing and I favor the most are ones where we have to tell a made up story or about a life event. I can write these very easily because I can remember the event very vividly or can make up a story with lots of detail. With event stories I usually just remember then write and occasionally go back to reread and fill some parts with more detail. In high school one of the first papers I had to write in my English class about a life event that changed your life. I thought to myself this is really easy to write about. I had an idea and there was no length on the paper so I didn't have to worry about how long it was. I was ready for this paper. I had confidence and I knew inside...

...especially in my English 1101 class. I thought I knew everything there was to know about writing when I came in on my first day, but I was very wrong. My professor assured me that there is much more to writing than just putting words down on paper. Knowing all of this, I have now learned how to improve on my writing skills, how to write better grammatically correct sentences, incorporate quotes and research and give as well as get criticism. When I came into this semester as a freshman I was very confident in the quality of my writing. However, my self-esteem was soon crushed shortly thereafter. Even though my writing skills had been very good compared to my classmates in high school, at the university level they were just average. After hearing about the on average grades students get in professor Elliott’s class, I knew I had a lot of work to do to receive an A on a paper. I had to do something quick to learn how improve on my writing skills. With the help of my teacher, she made us a read a variety of articles that were very interesting, yet also very insightful and helpful at the same time. One article that really stood out to me was called “Engfish.” In high school, teachers tend to get really impressed if you have really big words in a paper, but when you incorporate such large words, you tend to start losing your argument and start talking about nothing. After reading about “Engfish and having these helpful hints my professor threw my way, I...

Industrialization After the Civil War

...Sabrina Bell Museum Paper September 16, 2012 “THE SLAVE SHIP” “THE FALL OF MAN” Introduction The two artworks that I’m writing about are titled: “The Slave Ship and The Fall of Man” (Adam & Eve). Both of these paintings are unique in their own way. I chose these paintings because of the nature of the pictures or should I say the titles. I was intrigue because it captured the root of history and the bible. The artwork of “The Fall of man” is an engraving and the artist name is Albrecht Durer, whereas the artwork “The Slave Ship” is an oil painting and the artist name is Joseph M. William. I did not visit a museum I choose to research the paintings online. ART WORKS THE FALL OF MAN ART WORK THE SLAVE SHIP BODY OF PAPER Both of these paintings captured the essence of beauty in art. The images describe and implement the duration of representation of both people and things. I would like to think that both artists closed their eyes and when they open them they too were astonish at what they saw. The elements used to create such art, beautified the story of what’s being told. The picture of the Fall of Man helps identify the line because the artist defined the shapes/forms of individuals. I love how he captures the different features of the animals, trees, objects and the...

Sunni and Sj'Ia: the Branches of Islam

...Sunni and Sh’ia: The Branches of Islam By Kendra Craig March 5, 2010 Strayer University Abstract The paper is focused on Sunni and Sh’ia, which are two branches of Islam. The paper will compare the different religious belief that is practiced throughout Islam. It will also show the laws and the cultures of each religious branch. The paper will show the major dispute that caused separation of these religions in Islam. Sunni and Sh’ia Sunni and Sh’ia are two of the most dominate cultures in Islam. In my research, I learned that these two branches were among the worst enemies of the Islamic culture. In this paper I will show the differences in the belief of each religious group. I will also show the division within the Islamic community between these groups. Sunni Muslims are individuals that were firm believers in the prophet Muhammad. The words that were spoken through Muhammad influenced and provided them with strong religious belief. Sunni means “customary practices” (Macmillan Reference USA 2001-2006) which referred to the teaching and preaching of Muhammad. The Sh’ia Muslims are individuals that believe that the political leader position should have gone to Ali (Penay). Sh’ia means “group” or faction”. After the death of Muhammad is when things began to turn for the worst between these communities. The main belief of the Sunni Muslims was those that came after Muhammad were true believers of Muhammad teachings. This allowed them to become comfortable with...

Paper Number 1

...Critical Analysis Gerald Holt English 216 Liberty University Ode to a Lyrical Masterpiece Introduction Creative writing is seen by many as a way to free the expression of the mind, allowing anyone who feels the urge to put their thoughts on paper can do so. There are a large number of people who have lived throughout time that have had their legacy live forever through their writing because they were able to eloquently configure their thoughts in a manner to reach others. Writing in literature has stretched over many long periods since the beginning of time and that could easily be established by taking note that the Bible is the highest selling book of all time. The Bible may have not been written all at one time, but the majority of the works and its authors were mainly from the same time period. Writing has gone through different ages where the majority of writers had the same idea, or style of writing that they wanted to focus on. Some of the ages of writing that had a strong influence on literature as a whole were that of the neoclassical and romantic age of writing. One piece of literature in particular that has been the topic of many discussions is the “Ode to a Nightingale”. This piece of artwork has been under much scrutiny for its lyrical anatomy, and it has also received much praise for its elegance in form. This short poem has given the world of literature much to discuss all the way down to when it was actually written and how many pages it was originally...

Value Reflections Paper

...Running head: VALUE REFLECTION PAPER Values Reflection Paper Value Reflection Paper An important personal value that I hold in my life is my spirituality. Spirituality can have many different definitions, depending on who is asked. It can be something as simple as looking for a higher meaning to life, or something so complex that one can base their beliefs, religion and overall life around it. There are several different ways to express one's spirituality; rituals, songs, dances, stories, and writings are all common methods of expression. Finding spirituality in something can make someone feel enlightened and bring strong emotion and deep feeling. Several authors have based some of their writings on their spirituality. Some of these writings are as intricate as the Bible or as basic as an article in a local newspaper, but the meaning and passion behind them should never be doubted. In my personal value system and for the purpose of this Value Reflection paper, spirituality is forever tied to knowing God and doing God's will. We often hear the word "spirituality" used to signify that one has faith in a higher power. Spirituality as it is seen in Christianity is to believe in God. As a Christian, we believe that God loves us. We believe that Jesus died for us. We believe that Jesus rose from the dead with all power in his hand. Spirituality as it relates to Christianity says believe on a merciful God that loves and offers us redemption in spite of, and because of, our sins...

Ethics in the Name of Science

...of establishment of ethical principles within their research. Zimbardo’s Stanford Prison Experiment and Milgram’s Obedience experiment were ridiculed for the lack of ethics involved. Although these experiments caused unnecessary harm to their subjects they also acted as the foundation for the establishment of the Belmont Report, which in itself, would change research forever. Ethics in the Name of Science Two very controversial experiments have been dissected a thousand times over by some of social science’s most amazing minds as well as the academic populous worldwide. Though the Milgram experiment of 1962 and the Stanford Prison Experiment in 1971 were entirely different, they both shared the groundbreaking task of identifying the affects of “Obedience to Authority” (Milgram, 1974). Both social scientists believe they had identified the possible risks but fell short in their attempt to alleviate any ethical repercussions. This paper will address the attempts made to ensure moral and ethical studies were accomplished as well as identify where both experiments had major flaws in their plans to ensure no physical or emotional harm came to it’s subjects. To establish a baseline for this paper we must first define the basic principles of ethics. The Belmont report of 1979 states “Three basic principles (among those generally accepted in our cultural tradition) are particularly relevant to the ethics of research involving human subjects: the principles of respect...

Teen Pregnancy

...it is some thirty-three years ago or 2015, teenage pregnancy is occurring. The only exception between the two different decades is the magnitude of such adverse side effects that not only impacts the teenage mother, but others as well. In a majority of instances some sort of family member, or social worker, need to intervene and care for the child (since the mother can still be called one herself). As for my situation, I was very grateful to have both sets of my grandparent’s take over the responsibilities and duties that an adult mother and father typically account for. Granted, there was sufficient assistance to aid my teenage parents, but their irresponsibility, immaturity, and lack of knowledge for the future, divided both families forever. Which brings me to this; should the teenagers be blamed for the high pregnancy rates, or should the blame be laid at the feet of sex education programs and society around them, or rather a culmination of both? I believe we can’t just blame the individuals themselves. I feel it is the utmost responsibility and collective effort from the government, programs, parents, and role models around them to lay down the knowledge they need in order to make appropriate decisions so they can make the most out of their lives as possible. I make this claim because I have involuntarily contributed to the statistical history of such epidemic pregnancy rates and have also witnessed firsthand why my opinion remains...
