The Iliad has been a very important book in Greek literature. It had carved the way for literature and culture for thousands of years to come. The Iliad is based on the Trojan War. It is written by the Greek poet Homer, and it’s the story about the struggles of the gods and people to bring the Trojan War to an end. The story is very interesting, and it has many books. The big war starts when Zeus sends Paris, (the prince of Troy) to choose between three goddesses. He has to choose the “fairest” of the three, to entrust the apple of discord to one of them. Out of the three goddesses Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite, he chose Aphrodite. In return for the apple he got the hand of the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen. Unfortunately for Paris,

The Iliad Research Paper

...The Iliad is an epic poem which mainly focuses on the character of its two central characters; Achilles and Hector. Both these warriors are highly respected by their people. These warriors, at some point in the poem, know that they are fated to die in the war. However, they approach this fate of theirs differently. They both differ with each other in many ways beside the way in which they approach their fate. Achilles is a Greek warrior fighting for his immortal glory on a foreign land of Troy whereas Hector is fighting on his own soil in order to save his country from being destroyed by the Greeks. The main contrasting differences between these two warriors is the reason for their participation in the war, the ethic which drives them towards it and the decisions they make in their moment of isolation from their comrades....

Ms-13 Gang

...define; what is a gang? Merriam-Webster defines is as these three variations; a group of criminals; group of young people who do illegal things together and who often fight against other gangs; a group of people who are friends and who do things together. Though it is a general definition I am willing to argue that it may be more than that. In America today we see gangs as territorial, with this being said it can be dated all the way back since Homer’s The Iliad with the Achaeans and their adversaries. But what this paper will focus on the history of gangs in America. Street gangs have become predominantly larger through the previous centuries. Through the birth of this country “gangs” were made up of orphans who mustered together considering themselves like family to be stronger in as a tallied numbered force (Delaney 2006). There is evidence of “gangs” existing early America since the Revolutionary war, and since then researchers have recorded at least 500 gangs between 1760 and 1900(Gurr 1989). While this recorded research is accurate modern rendition of “gangs” became famous with such gangs like Forty Thieves and Dead Rabbits (Delaney 2006). Before there was any law enforcement in early America citizens in New York were pleased with the level of public safety and were not concerned with crime because it wasn’t a real threat. Cities like New York had no police, rather seen service by the local watch to be sufficient. It all changed...

Mysteries of the Trojans

...Week 4 Assignment 1: Mysteries of the Trojans Alicia Robinson HUM 110 – World Cultures I Strayer University Dr. Bull October 31, 2013 Mysteries of the Trojans In the following paper, I will attempt to explain the mysteries surrounding the lost city of Troy, the Trojan soldiers, the Trojan War and the famous story about the Trojan horse. This paper will show why I believe that sometimes myths may not be merely myths at all, but may actually have more validity to them than one may think. These so called myths should not be so easily dismissed and I will try to explain why I truly believe this. The mysteries concerning these stories are the basis of the Homeric tales, the Odysseus, and the Iliad, written by a man whom history calls Homer, but no one is even sure if this was his name or maybe even his profession. There are many theories surrounding this alone. Many claim that he was a blind man and may be a descendent of singer, story tellers. Before Homer, epic stories were memorized and then sung. These were in fact true accounts of history, not like songs that are sung today. The Homeric stories are some of the oldest written stories of all time, (dating back to around 800 B.C.E.). The Trojan War is believed, (by scholars), to have taken place between 1800 and 1300 B.C.E., but the first written accounts were not written until, some five centuries later, after the Greeks adopted the Phoenician writing system. Stories, until then, had been handed down...

Three Dilemmas of Chimeras

...Fertilization (IVF) therapies have helped increase scientific understanding in a previously unnoticed phenomenon. IVF increases the likely hood of multiple blastocysts merging to become one organism. Moreover, developments in cellular research stem cell research, and cross species transplants has brought the possibility of human-nonhuman into the forefront of scientific research for which we are ill prepared. There are three dilemmas that are shaping public policy, and constraining scientific research. These dilemmas are political, ethical, and moral. As we work to answer these dilemmas, we also stumble to maintain international leadership in scientific advancement. Chimeras are an interesting realization in modern science. A chimera was initially mentioned in ancient Greek literature as a beast consisting of a lion, a goat, and a snake. (Homer & Murray, 2012) This definitely sounds like an archaic depiction of a mythological creature, but the title also has some contemporary uses. In modern biology, a Chimera is simply an organism with multiple Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequences. On the surface, this subject seems like an interesting biological focus, but one may find it hard to research this subject of biology without scratching the surface of the political, ethical, and moral implications that are part of the conversation when discussing the subject manner. The political, ethical, and moral implications that come...

...Business Problem Paper The Amazon Kindle is a wireless, "convenient, and portable reading device with the ability to download books, blogs, magazines and newspapers" from almost anywhere in the United States (Amazon, 2008). Michael Lewis, the author of Moneyball and Liar’s Poker predicts, “this (the Amazon Kindle) is the future of book reading. It will be everywhere.” (Amazon, 2008). This report will determine whether the current $399.00 price tag is reasonable to successfully support and sustain the sale of the Kindle. It will clearly define the dependent and independent variables of the study, state the null and alternative hypotheses, and the methodology used to test the hypotheses. It will compute the sample size required which will provide clear support for the criteria used. The samples that are selected and produced are described, including the methodology used to collect the data and a description of the survey instruments. A final recommendation is offered regarding whether the Kindle is a good buy at $399, or if Amazon needs to alter the price or product. What is the Amazon Kindle? The Kindle is Amazons version of an eBook reader. It has been in the making for three years, first offered to the public in November 2007. It uses eInk, a screen that offers non-glare viewing, and no backlighting which mimics a traditional paper publication feel. While twitter addiction disorder or twitter addiction are not medically accepted terms, the actuality of addictive behavior on twitter is a mounting concern for scores of twitter users, and one that psychoanalysts are seeing more regularly in their patients. “If you have found that sharing, connecting and learning through twitter has replaced all avenues of learning and communicating and in your life, it is a possibility that you have twitter addiction disorder” (Fenichel.) “Using Twitter for literate communication is about as likely as firing up a CB radio and hearing some guy recites ‘The Iliad.’" - Bruce Sterling, science fiction writer and journalist. Twitter reduces the amount of time spent with significant people in one’s life through frequent checking of profile updates and tweeting. “The qualities that make Twitter seem inane and half-baked are...

...person that Swaminathan Iyer is It has taken 19 years. 19 long years of writing useless answers to useless questions (Not accounting for the three years I was unable to hold a pen/pencil properly. Make no mistake, I’m 22), of filling bundles of valuable paper with non-sense, for me to place my lazy bum on this chair to answer the most pertinent of questions (and here I am, not wasting paper anymore. Oh! The irony!), who is Swaminathan Iyer? Disclaimer : To make things easy for me for the rest of my Iliad, Swaminathan Iyer will be shortened to Swami. Its short, and to tell you the truth, I prefer it that way. And then, when I think about it once the initial surprise of not thinking about this question wears off, isn’t it obvious for me to actually know myself before I pen this? Ok, type this. That is something which takes time, even years perhaps. One has to wait for the right time. But then, how does one know when the right time has come? There, I came up with this philosophical gem! The right time is when you decide its the right time. To tell you the truth, this is harder than it first seemed, but necessary. So, without further ado, let me just get down to it. As preparation for this article, I decided to do some research, I watched some interviews on YouTube to see what exactly interviewers asked the interviewees, to broadcast their life to a wider audience, but then I stumbled upon the Arnab Goswami-Rahul Gandhi interview and decided that I had had enough. I felt as though...

The Realiability and Authenticity of the Bible

...The reliability and authenticity of the Bible The Bible claims to be the inspired word of God (2 Tim. 3:16, TEV). Yet much controversy and criticism exists over this book. If we are to accept and base our lives on the Bible as the word of God, then we need to have confidence in the reliability and the authenticity of the Bible. That is, we need to have confidence that the Bible is dependable and trustworthy and that what was written did happen. This essay outlines some convincing evidence to prove that this is the case. I will summarize and discuss bibliographical, external and internal evidence which confirms the reliability and authenticity of the bible. One of the first pieces of evidence lies in the uniformity of the message of the Bible. It is a collection of sixty-six books written over a period of approximately fifteen hundred years in three languages on three continents by forty authors. Kings, peasants, educated men, a doctor, a prime minister, a tax collector a rabbi, a fisherman are among the authors (McDowell, 1973). While it discusses numerous issues, and each book has different purposes, the overall themes of creation, the fall of man and redemption are clear throughout (Williams, 2002). Military historian Chauncy Sanders mentions three criteria scholars use in historiography (Williams, 2002). When applied to test whether the scriptures we have are the same as the original documents, that is to test their accuracy, these are manuscript evidence (textual)...

MRS. DEPARTMENT OF FACULTY OF UNIVERSITY OF UYO, UYO AKWA IBOM STATE, NIGERIA. FEBRUARY, 2012 1. INTRODUCTION All human societies have medical beliefs that provide explanations for birth, death, and disease. Throughout history, illness has been attributed to witchcraft, demons, astral influence, or the will of the gods. These ideas still retain some power, with faith healing and shrines still used in some places, although the rise of scientific medicine over the past millennium has altered or replaced mysticism in most cases. The ancient Egyptians had a system of medicine that was very advanced for its time and influenced later medical traditions. The Egyptians and Babylonians both introduced the concepts of diagnosis, prognosis, and medical examination. The Hippocratic Oath, still taken by doctors today, was written in Greece in the 5th century BCE, Horstmanshoff et al (2004:7). In the medieval era, surgical practices inherited from the ancient masters were improved and then systematized in Rogerius's The Practice of Surgery. During the Renaissance, understanding of anatomy improved, and the invention of the microscope would later lead to the germ theory of disease. These advancements, along with developments in chemistry, genetics...
