The Effect of Delivery Method on Breastfeeding Initiation from the Ontario Mother and Infant Study (TOMIS) III

In 2006, the World Health Assembly endorsed the WHO Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding, aiming to promote protect and support breastfeeding (WHO, 2003, p. 733). The Ontario Mother and Infant Study (TOMIS) III was conducted in Ontario Canada from the years 2006-2008 to study the relationships between the method of the delivery, and maternal and infant health, cost of care at 6 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year, on breastfeeding initiation. The study consisted of 2,560 participant’s of which were ages 16years and older. The methods of delivery that were studied were: unassisted vaginal delivery, assisted vaginal delivery; which included forceps and vacuum, planned cesarean and unplanned cesarean. The participants were recruited from 11 hospitals in Ontario, Canada. The study will show that there is an effect of the delivery method when unplanned on breast feeding initiation. The researchers concluded that breast feeding is used more often when there is an unplanned birth experience and serves a function to reduce stress caused by that experience. Exclusive breast feeding is recommended by pediatric and public health experts as the food of life for the first six months of infant’s life (WHO, 2003) Data in the TOMIS III study was conducted using a quantitative sequential mixed method design. The data was acquired using hospital records, in hospital questionnaires, and 6 week post partum interviews. The questionnaire included questions in regards to the infants feeding style, birth weight, gender, infant health problems, mother’s obstetric history, delivery method,

A Summary of the Concept of Social Research

...A Summary of the Concept of Social Research Earth could be thought of as an exchange center of two things among its sentient inhabitants, intellectual and genetic information. The exchange of genetic information is quite a straight forward concept, with the need for reproduction being necessary to the survival of a species. However the reasons behind transference of intellectual information and how that information is transferred through mass groups of people is what fascinates social researchers. Furthermore, these social researchers seek to identify order and regularity in the complexity of social life; in an effort to make sense of it all. This is essentially carried out by making representations of how people do or refuse to do things together, then by going into detail about whatever order they have found. The creation of representations of social life is essentially done for the purpose of better understanding why humans interact with each other in the ways they do. A study that suggests cities with the most severe housing segregation by race and income levels were the ones that experienced the most severe inner-city deterioration is a representation of one facet of society as a whole. This study attempts to shed light on an issue by examining the intricate relations of economic and racial influences leading to a similar situation happening throughout all urban environments. To most effectively convey the order social researchers have uncovered, they publish their...

Four Main Components for Effective Outlines Ideally, you should follow the four suggestions presented here to create an effective outline. When creating a topic outline, follow these two rules for capitalization: For firstlevel heads, present the information using all uppercase letters; and for secondary and tertiary items, use upper and lowercase letters. The examples are taken from the Sample Outline handout. Parallelism—How do I accomplish this? Each heading and subheading should preserve parallel structure. If the first heading is a verb, the second heading should be a verb. Example: I. CHOOSE DESIRED COLLEGES II. PREPARE APPLICATION ("Choose" and "Prepare" are both verbs. The present tense of the verb is usually the preferred form for an outline.) Wk 1 Business Research Summary

...Business Research Process Kaiser Permanente Kaiser Permanente (KP), a prominent and not-for-profit healthcare establishment, has received an opportunity to trial and promote a new medical equipment in which KP members can ultimately receive improved patient care services. Should the equipment trial conclude successfully, the equipment can be purchased at a reduced price. With KP facilities equipped with extensive radiology and oncology equipment, specific KP medical centers will receive a state of the art MRI machine on behalf of General Electric (GE). The new MRI machine will provide more clear and accurate images for x-rays, CAT scans, ultrasounds, and nuclear medicine tests. In addition, the machine would eliminate patients having to sit or lie in uncomfortable positions to retrieve bodily images which will increase patient satisfaction. Should KP choose to trial the equipment and attain positive results, remaining KP facilities and other healthcare competitors will pursue the purchase of the new MRI machine. However, prior to committing to a new billion dollar equipment and promotion commitment, KP must engage in research to determine if the new equipment will benefit their members along with which facility would pilot the new machine. “Good research generates dependable data that are derived by professionally conducted practices and that can be used reliably for decision making” (Cooper & Schindler, 2011). Various teams will combine efforts to extract data from...

...Consulting Case Memo -- Outline Executive Summary While this section appears first, it should actually be the last thing you write. * The executive summary should be no more than one page. * Executive summaries are not “introductions.” They do not provide background. * Everything discussed in the executive summary should be explained in greater detail in the body of the memo. * If the only thing someone reads is your executive summary, your reader should have a good understanding of the problem, your proposal, the most important cost(s), and the most important benefit(s). Problem Statement Identify the problem in business terms. State clearly why the owner, president, or CEO should care about addressing the problem you’ve identified. Proposed Solution Identify the one most important action the company or organization needs to take to address the problem. Be as specific as possible in describing your solution. ...Running head: Research Critique, Part 1 Research Critique, Part 1 Grand Canyon University: NRS-433V Introduction to Nursing Research May 20, 2012 Research Critique, Part 1 Advanced Care Planning (ACP) is a huge part of healthcare. Dying is a part of life, but that doesn’t make the subject any less scary. Just because healthcare professionals handle end of life issues on a regular basis, doesn’t mean that they are immune to the sensitivities of the topic. End-of-life decision making is the process that healthcare providers, patients, and patients’ families go through when considering what treatments will or will not be used to treat a life-threatening illness. (Thelen, 2005) Many nurses who deal with death and decision making burn out. Hospice staff, because of their work with the terminally ill, are considered a high-risk group for burnout. Often, the reason behind the decision to leave or take a sabbatical from hospice work is that the staff member reached the limits of his or her capacity to care and “couldn’t take it anymore.” (Keidel, 2002) A qualitative study done, on anticipating emotion, related to ACP, was chosen to be critiqued, due to this highly sensitive topic in the healthcare industry. The subject this study was critiqued on, were, the problem statement, purpose and research question, literature review, and conceptual/theoretical framework. The clinical problem, addressed, is that end of life discussions between healthcare professionals and clients...
