George Washington Carver For centuries scientists have expanded the many discoveries within the chemistry community that have provided the world with educational and personal impact. George Washington Carver was a man of honor and help that developed beneficial services to farmers and slaves during his time. He dedicated his life to research projects that over time changed Southern farmers declining economic crisis. “The products he derived from the peanut and the soybean revolutionized the economy of the South by liberating it from an excessive dependence on cotton” (“George Washington carver”, 1993). From being a teacher to well known advocate, Carver was influential man that committed his life to helping others no matter the circumstances. This led him to the developments of methods for conserving nutrients in soil and discoveries of new uses for crops like the peanut helped transform the agricultural economy of the South.
Although born into slavery, George Washington Carver became one of the nation’s greatest educators and agricultural researchers/chemist. With a childhood illness that could have taken his life, Carver worked hard as a child with household chores and gardening. His keen interest in learning how to read, write, and spell took Carver to high places that all African American children dreamed of. He worked hard to get into college where many schools declined him because of his skin color. Regardless of such disappointing reasons, his determination and perseverance did not stop him and led him to become Iowa State’s first African American Faculty member. Even though being part of a big university’s educational program he was constantly belittled because of his race. Despite these difficulties he was forced to face he never abandoned his studies and over the years broadened his intelligence of botany and plant pathology. This devotion drove him to publish several articles that allowed him to achieve newly found respect from the nation. Within two years he was invited by Booker T. Washington to be a part of the Tuskegee Institute faculty, where he remained for the rest of his life. “Carver was the only black in America to have received advanced training in scientific agriculture. He was the only teacher at Tuskegee with a degree from a white college and was the institute's highest paid professor” (Clue, Cornejo, Foster, Galiffa, Gilman & Hitchcock, 2006). His ability to captivate and inspire his students and co-workers made him feel proud of what all the obstacles that had tried to stop him at had only pushed him farther to complete what he was born to do. With his driven heart to help people he wanted to continue his work but in a larger aspect.
Carver set out to do more research made time to perform experiments along with his teachings at Tuskegee. “He conducted experiments in soil management and crop production and directed an experimental farm” ("George Washington Carver", 2012). He learned that agriculture in the Deep South was in trouble leaving the soil of an abundant of fields worthless and the farmlands were no longer able to produce cotton. Carver was provided with ten acres of the unfit soil to make better. By planting cow peas he discovered that this put nitrogen back in the soil which would produce food for the plants to eat and grow. He then planted more cotton and learned that he could grow more cotton than what he planted. This life changing discovery lead Carver to conclusion that farmers could not plant the same crop after one another and that they needed to do a “crop rotation” which would allow the soil to stay rich. “Carver urged Southern farmers to plant peanuts and soybeans, which, since they belong to the legume family, could restore nitrogen to the soil while also providing the protein so badly needed in the diet of many Southerners” (George Washington Carver”, 2012). The peanut marked Carver’s fame and made it a most important factor with the help of freeing the South from its dependency on cotton. But another problem had arisen. The farmers focused more on the peanut crops they learned that there was a little demand in the market for them and soybeans. Carver expanded his research in response to this situation and created programs of laboratory research to enlarge the profitable possibilities of peanuts and sweet potatoes. With this newly addition of the many developments Carver had produced he created over 300 products derived from peanuts and sweet potatoes. With joyous praises from the local farmers, Carver went public with his discoveries and caused an increasing amount of incomes and demands for peanuts, sweet potatoes, and their derivatives. This generated the South as a major supplier of agricultural products. Peanuts were never recognized as crop, nonetheless a profitable one, and later became the second leading cash crop all throughout the South and United States. “Carver's efforts had finally helped liberate the South from its excessive dependence on cotton” (“George Washington Carver”, 2012). When the time was needed, Carver was an agriculturalist advocate. His economical improvements led Southern farmers to fight for their crops to achieve an income to support themselves and family.
Throughout the early and mid 1900’s, Carver’s research was remarkably known for its diversity because of the production of many products, the use of peanuts as a crop is mainly known. To some people the historical value of the peanut is nothing more than a little snack that helped produce some oils and peanut butter. But there is more depth to it than that. Without the production of the peanut farmers would have never fixed their crops and all of farming would have been lost. The derivatives that are significantly used to this day would have never been discovered and human would not have anything to look forward to when it comes to eating. Carver made a momentous impact on how human beings utilize the Earth’s natural resources. His developments and discoveries opened the eyes of many to the different natural and environmental benefits. His ideas revolutionized agriculture in the South. His techniques of “crop rotation” that he constructed informed famers on how grow better and improve their production. Not only did his tremendous findings help the South in their time of need in to 1900’s, but to this day farmers are still using his ideas to help save their crops.
It was said that because of his gardening duties that were performed as chores as a child they lead him to his interests in plants. This sparked the name the “plant doctor” throughout the land near his home. But it was art that led Carver to wanting to receive a more formal education in college. His true love for plants was later revealed and transformed him into becoming one of the nation’s renowned agriculture chemist that changed the lives of many. “Many scientists thought of Carver more as a concoctionist than as a contributor to scientific knowledge” (“George Washington Carver”, 20112). He was an astonishing man that acknowledged relationships between plants and human beings. He taught his students that the world was one. His desire to inspire and encourage the world changed lives and let people know that with hard work you can accomplish just about anything. "He could have added fortune to fame, but caring for neither; he found happiness and honor in being helpful to the world" (Anderson, 2003). Being an African American during his time he attacked barriers that most people of the same ethnicity would never approach. His impacts on societies led to more developments within the farming community and altered it as a whole completely.

...Toy Story - analysis of the Jot case study Adrian Sims of BPP Professional Education provides some initial analysis of the pre-seen material for the TOPCIMA Part B – Case Study exams on February 28th and May 24th 2012. I’m writing this article in late December 2011 to help candidates prepare for the March and May 2012 T4 (TOPCIMA) exams based on the pre-seen material for Jot- toy case. Some previous T4 cases have lacked fun, but toys are fun. I’m sorry, but I decided to combine this article with quotes from the three Toy Story movies (Disney/Pixar). The Toy Story quotes are in italics, a bit contrived, and probably of no use for the exam. They made me smile and gave me (and you) an excuse to watch the Toy Story movies again. But my newspaper today rather kills the joyful mood. It has the headline ‘Sales boom may not save High Street big names: analysts predict failures within days’. It reports that the December sales boom has been insufficient and has left many stores with unsold stocks and unable to pay their outgoings. This has afflicted markets as diverse as camping equipment and lingerie. This brings us to the heart of the Jot pre-seen material. Jot makes toys and is part of an industry for which November and December sales are critical. It depends on retailers to sell its products, but retail in Europe is facing terrible times as a consequence of the recession caused by the sharp reductions in government spending and collapse of bank lending. It has a perilous cash flow...

...I.Study Background A first class canteen which can be tagged as "a place cut above the rest" in the whole campus or even in the city or region was planned to be established in Holy Angel University and was altered as years went by. Holy Angel then established a café instead and HRM practicum students are said to run the facility and make it as their training grounds to practice theories learned from their course. Because of the feasibility studies about a shop inside a campus of some of the students done by two HRM groups, the plan was further strengthened. They named the establishment as Tasa which means cup and the other is Café Holyana for the school’s name and its students. The management did not adopt the ideas of the two groups instead, named it as Cafe Juan to honor the late Don Juan Nepomuceno who is the founder of the University. After months of preparation preceding the construction, procuring the needed equipment, making the menu (costing and pricing) relative to the bought equipment; and other things needed for the operation. On August 28, 2003, Cafe Juan had its soft opening. The establishment has a 100 seating capacity which could be adjusted to 120 depending on function needs. Catering services within the campus is also accepted or provided by Café Juan. Café store hours are from 9:00-7:00pm from Mondays - Saturdays. ...NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY WINTER 2010 COURSE 437 STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT FOR ENGINEERS SYLLABUS Professor: Teaching Assistant Donald R. McNeeley, Ph.D. Susan O’Dea, sodea@chicagotube.com Phone: 815-834-8501 Phone: 815-834-8503 E-mail: dmcneeley@chicagotube.com Course Overview: Organizations have learned that the adage, grow or die is more than a cliché. In today’s global market, maintaining the status quo is no longer an option. As the velocity of change accelerates, historic paradigms are surrendering to new. For organizations to survive in today’s competitive environment, management must anticipate the strategic inflection of organizational evolution. Engineers have played a major role in the advancement of society. Undergraduate education for engineers is thorough, precise, and understandably micronistic. At the graduate level, we attempt to couple the micro skills with the broader macro perspective or, in other words, the proverbial big picture. The management role requires engineers to be able to envision, from a broader perspective, the operation of an organization and the market one serves. You must learn to think, act, speak, and process from the “management mind.” This capstone course draws from all functional areas of an enterprise to provide strategic direction to an organization. It also provides engineers with a management perspective as a complement to the engineering orientation, which they currently possess. Strategies are offered to ensure...

Taking the temperature is a fieldwork technique used to complete a weather diary of meteorological conditions. The act of taking the temperature can be varied and if not done correctly can alter your results. For my weather diary I made sure I took the temperature at the same time every day as to get true, comparable results. To keep consistency in my results I also took the temperature using the same thermometer each time, and took the readings from the shade, rather than somewhere in direct sunlight, which could have given a fake result, as the temperature readings could have been higher as they were I the sun. this helped me complete my weather diary, as it allowed me to see the temperature...

...Student Sample B A study of current attitudes to GM food: Literature review Introduction Genetically modified (GM) food has been available since 1984 (Butcher, 2009). GM organisms are created through a biotechnological process which consists of altering traits of original crops by inserting the DNA of another organism (MacCracken et al, 2011). As with all innovations, these developments in biotechnology have led to numerous studies about whether the benefits outweigh the risks (Shah, 2002). In the case of GM, the uncertain benefits and unknown risks might influence public perception (Ronteltap et al., 2007). Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to evaluate a wide range of published studies on public attitudes towards GM food, including studies by the FSA (2003), Sheldon et al. (2009) and Bredhal (1999), in order to provide a basis for the following research. This paper will firstly analyse the importance of knowledge in shaping public attitudes. Secondly, different types of attitudes will be categorised. The final section will be devoted to the factors that shape different attitudes. The paper concludes with a discussion of the main themes; highlighting different issues mentioned and relating them to the current research. Public Knowledge of GM food It is widely recognised that the availability of information plays a key role in consumer choice and decisions. ...The Future of Same-Day Delivery: Same as the Past? Although home delivery of pizza has been successful in the United States, most other sameday delivery efforts have failed. The same-day delivery battle has again heated up with Amazon, Walmart, and eBay launching major efforts to implement same-day delivery. Amazon has a new game. Now that it has agreed to collect sales taxes, the company canlegally set up warehouses right inside some of the largest metropolitan areas in the nation. Why would it want to do that? Because Amazon’s new goal is to get stuff to you immediately—as soon as a few hours after you hit Buy. It’s hard to overstate how thoroughly this move will shake up the retail industry. Sameday delivery has long been the holy grail of Internet retailers, something that dozens of startups have tried and failed to accomplish. (Remember Kozmo.com?) But Amazon is investing billions to make next-day delivery standard, and same-day delivery an option for lots of customers. If it can pull that off, the company will permanently alter how we shop. To put it more bluntly: Physical retailers will be hosed. Walmart reacted to Amazon’s efforts by announcing tests for same-day delivery in a few cities. The big-box giant announced this week that it too would be offering same-day delivery, using its extensive network of superstores as distribution centers, and shipping products to consumers via UPS. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, the service will initially...

At what point can adults do whatever they want, if at all? When is it time to put other needs before your own? Why does Rose Mary behave this way? To answer this question I am going to attempt to diagnose Rose Mary with a mental illness, to justify her thinking and reasoning throughout the memoir. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, bipolar disorder is "a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks" Jeannette seems to understand that her mother is mentally ill, “"She'd be happy for days on end, announcing that she decided to think only positive thoughts" She goes on to say "But the positive thoughts would give way to negative thoughts...when that happened, Mom would refuse to get out of bed... she would lay wrapped up in blankets on the sofa bed, sobbing about how much she hated her life" (Walls 157). I also will study her artwork, and how she balanced art and motherhood. Was her artwork so important to put before her Children’s welfare? “A FEW DAYS AFTER Mom and Dad brought me home, I cooked myself some hot dogs. I was hungry, Mom was at work on a painting, and no one else was there to fix them for me (Walls...
