Figurative language
Figurative language can take multiple forms such as simile or metaphor. Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia Of Literature says that figurative language can be classified in five categories: resemblance or relationship, emphasis or understatement, figures of sound, verbal games, and errors. A simile is a comparison of two things, indicated by some connective, usually "like", "as", "than", or a verb such as "resembles" to show how they are similar.
Example: "His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry.../And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow."
A metaphor is figure of speech in which two "essentially unlike things" are shown to have a type of resemblance or create a new image. The similarities between the objects being compared may be implied rather than directly stated.
Example: "Fog comes on little cat feet"
An extended metaphor is metaphor that is continued over multiple sentences.
Example: "The sky steps out of her daywear/Slips into her shot-silk evening dress./An entourage of bats whirr and swing at her hem, ...She's tried on every item in her wardrobe."
Onomatopoeia is a word designed to be an imitation of a sound.
Example: “Bark! Bark!” went the dog as he chased the car that vroomed past.
Personification is the attribution of a personal nature or character to inanimate objects or abstract notions, especially as a rhetorical figure.
Example: "Because I could not stop for Death,/He kindly stopped for me;/The carriage held but just ourselves/And Immortality." Dickinson portrays death as a carriage driver.
An oxymoron is a figure of speech in which a pair of opposite or contradictory terms is used together for emphasis.
Examples: Organized chaos, Same difference,
A paradox is a statement or proposition which is self-contradictory, unreasonable, or illogical.
Example: This statement is a lie.

...Synopsis Born on May 14, 1984 in Dobbs Ferry, New York, Mark Zuckerberg co-founded the social-networking website Facebook out of his college dorm room. He left Harvard after his sophomore year to concentrate on the site, the user base of which has grown to more than 250 million people, making Zuckerberg a billionaire. The birth of Facebook was recently portrayed in the filmThe Social Network. Understanding people is not a waste of time. – Mark Zuckerberg Early Life Mark Elliot Zuckerberg was born on May 14, 1984 in Dobbs Ferry, New York, into a comfortable, well-educated family. His father, Edward Zuckerberg, ran a dental practice attached to the family's home. His mother, Karen, worked as a psychiatrist before the birth of the couple's four children—Mark, Randi, Donna and Arielle. Zuckerberg developed an interest in computers at an early age; when he was about 12, he used Atari BASIC to create a messaging program he named "Zucknet." His father used the program in his dental office, so that the receptionist could inform him of a new patient without yelling across the room. The family also used Zucknet to communicate within the house. Together with his friends, he also created computer games just for fun. "I had a bunch of friends who were artists," he said. "They'd come over, draw stuff, and I'd build a game out of it." To keep up with Mark's burgeoning interest in computers, his parents hired private computer tutor David Newman to come to the house once a week and work...

Heros Reserch Paper

...Heroes We live in a world where we are told we can do what we want and we are in control of our own lives, but does that mean we can take our own lives as well? Today our suicide rates are raising rapidly as the younger generations grow. As of now, the topic of legalizing assisted suicide is being as the rates of the terminally ill rise. We as morally upright people should ban together and stop the legalization of assisted suicide because it will create a black market, the emotional and mental state of the assailant is put into jeopardy and if doctors are involved in the suicide they are violating the morals the vowed to honor upon certification. If assisted suicide became legal what would happen to the bodies? Sure, some will have a proper funeral and be buried accordingly but what about those people who are financially unstable and only see death as a way out of all their problems. One possibility is they are sold to black market buyers whose specialty is body parts and organs. If assisted suicide was made legal black market contributors would see this opportunity to be able get all the organs they wanted and sold them at ridiculous prices. It could a common notion that someone of the deceased would not want their body that there “in control” of be cut up and sold off on an illegal buying place. Allen Hall presents a very compelling argument as she is reporting on a woman who is working as a nurse at Dignatis, an assisted suicide clinic named, Soraya Wernli. Wernli reports...

...The Volkswagen Beetle The Beetle Volkswagen is an old car that has been around for decades. The first Beetle was made by Adolf Hitler in Germany in the year of 1938. That makes this car over 75 years old. They prices the first Beetle at $106 on average to an average family. Not like the cars at the time, it had an engine that could go over 100km without using more than 7 liters of gasoline. For that reason it was presented the nickname “the people’s car”. Now, the Beetles have been modified to be different. Since there are so many different models in different years, I chose one that when I think beetle, I think the Volkswagen New Beetle GL Hatchback 2b. Most people don’t know what it is called but see the picture below to get a good idea. This particular car has a 1984cc, 2 liter in-line 4 engine with 82.5 mm bore, 92.8 mm stroke, 10 compression ratio, and overhead cam, three valve per cylinder, air-cooled and with a torque of 122ft at 2600rpm. As well as a horsepower of 115mph at 5208rpm. Also, this car goes 21 mpg on city roads and 28mpg on the highway with a 14.5 gallon tank. For this particular car, the pricing varies. If you want a brand new, 2015, beetle, the price would average at about $24,993. If you were to get a used, 2000, beetle, the price would average at $3920. Now, the oldest beetle you can get is from 1998, still, that is over 15 years old. Anyway, it wouldn’t be as long as you think. The average for that year and model of the beetle would be $2953....

Reserch Paper - Capital Investments

...CAPITAL INVESTMENTS: MODELS USED IN DECISION MAKING Capital investments are long-term investments made by companies to eventually enhance profitability and shareholder value. Capital investments normally last a company for a number of years, and they take longer periods of time to implement or enhance within an organization. Some examples of capital investments include, but are not limited too: automation in factories (equipment and software), research and development, equipment to improve quality control, software to test productivity measures, etc. These investments include a great deal of labor, capital and time to implement. Since capital investments can be risky, meaning any losses will be large to the organization considering the amount of time and capital involved, organizations have a process to determine what capital investments they should get involved in, and why. Capital investment decisions are concerned with the process of planning, setting goals and priorities, arranging financing and using certain criteria to select long-term assets. (“Hansen & Mowen,” 2011) Companies may start by listing all the improvements that are to be made to affect profitability in the long run. Since these improvements will consume large amounts of time and capital, it is not feasible for companies to make multiple investments at a time. To assist in deciding which investment to take on first, the company must calculate which will be the most profitable and increase shareholder...

...writing. In fact, the three universities that I have attended in the past have all required me to use the APA style of writing. As I recall my high school years, the APA style of writing also seemed to be a favorite amongst my high school teachers. They all required that term papers be written in APA style as well. This type of writing actually does not differ much from the ones included in the text reading. The text mentioned the APA style of writing several times. In my opinion, it appears to be the most popular style of writing, especially amongst college students. Based on the results of the quizzes, my grammar skills were actually a little better than average. I actually had expected to do better, but I guess my grammar skills are not as good as I thought they were. In any event I feel very confident when it comes to spelling, as I have always been a great speller. Even in grade school, I was a good speller. I learned at a very young age to challenge myself when it comes to spelling. Challenging my-self in that area really paid off as I became older, as I’ve never had a problem with spelling. However, I feel that I need more help with run on sentences and with thought patterns. Though I proof read my paper several times, it’s hard for me to see that I have several run on sentences until after I get my grade back. In general, I feel that my writing is just mediocre. However, I also believe that when it comes to writing, I am my own worst critic. Reason being, I am never...
