Tiffany, I appreciate your comments on the needs to stay current with the cultural changes and growth that continue to take place with students. The population growth of Hispanic and African-Americans has increased to a new level that in the near future the minority will become the “majority”. A good example of this trend is the student population in my school district which is made up of predominantly Hispanics, while Anglo-Americans make up about 10%, and African-Americans & others less than 5%. The attention to these changes in demographics is indeed important in providing assistance with the specific needs of the students, and their families, in an effort to help the student become successful. Based on the matter of cultural issues as mentioned in Chapter 5 of our text, I recall another cultural aspect in need of consideration- family dynamics.

In the latest revision of the ACA Code of Ethics, the subject of cultural diversity is addressed. Multicultural and diversity issues have changed the way counselors view the concept of family. (Erford 2011) This means also considering other household members who may, or may not, have a biological connection with the student such as stepparents, foster parents, second mom or dad, grandparents, and so on. This concept is reflected in the change from the term “family” to “support network” in the 2005 ACA Code of Ethics. (Erford 2011) It is because of this change of family dynamics, counselors were required to revise their approach when servicing students and their families.
